My parents were from Quebec and it was spoken at home for my older siblings. Living in the States and starting school, they had to learn English after failing 1st grade. By the time I became aware of what was going on, it was strictly English. I've attempted to learn French in highschool but it wasn't the same. I did speak a little bit but with a Quebecoise accent, which she tried to correct. Of course I refused because allowing her to do that would take away who I was.

Bless you for your videos! I lived on the South Shore of Montreal, near Brossard, for most of my youth, and was even enrolled in French immersion classes at school. But the French language that I was taught in school was not the same as what I heard on the streets, and I would freeze up when talking to a Francophone. My parents, being Anglophones, didn’t leave on good terms in the early 1980’s, and I began to lose my vocabulary Once we moved to Ontario. Lately, I have a desire to communicate when visiting Quebec, using the proper language, and your videos are very helpful. One day, I want to return to Montreal with the confidence that I can communicate fluently in Quebec French. Merci.

I grew up in Vancouver but also did immersion. Imagine my horror at visiting Quebec as a youg man for the first time and realizing I'd learned very different vocab! I've traveled quite a bit to Quebec, Belgium, Swirterland and France and always try to read up/listen to the local language before if I can. That said I plan on visiting Quebec frequently going forward and want to go "all in" in mastering French Canadian. These videos are so helpful! Too bad we didn't have her for a teacher!

my mother was born in Montreal and raised in Dollard until she was around 10 or 11 years old and her family moved to BC due to her learning disabilities that she only found out about recently in. her 40s made it impossible to learn French without the help she couldn't get. I've wanted to learn French since I I was old enough to understand the importance of the quebecois culture my mother and by extension myself have missed out on but due to my own struggles it has been impossible until recently. I'm finally doing somewhat well these past few years so hopefully I will finally be able to pick it up and visit Quebec! my mom has lost almost all of her accent since hers was weaker being anglophone but she still has some of it with certain words that her grandmother favoured such as shit and in the brief moments she remembers French words it is such a beautiful thing to hear her say them as those hints of accent I hear when she swears in English come to life. sadly my mother was barely conversational in French and uncle has forgotten how to speak for the most part so along with my grandfather and his parents passing away in 2020 for a magnitude of reasons I no longer have an French speaking family. I hope to learn quebecois French so I can honour their memory and understand more of the beautiful culture myself and my mother never got to experience to a full extent.

This is 100% true. Back in the days, I started watching my favorite tv show in its original version with french subtiles at first, then I switched to English subtitles, to eventually no subtitles at all in the span of just a few months. It didn't take long before I was able to communicate in english ( however It took me a while to get used to all the different accents). So if anyone sees my comment and has any doubts about this video, I swear what she says is true, this truly is the best way to learn any language.

Bonjour Helene ! I've been subscribed to your channel for more than a year now and it's helped me improve my Quebec French. noticeably. As teacher of both English and French(France's French),I agree with every single point you said concerning learning via different methods but I don't agree with one, and that's "not learning grammar". In my opinion, it is absolutely crucial to learn it(not every single part of it of course) .I think it's one of the main Pilars of learning a new language since it allows you to build blocks of correct phrases and when you get to a certain point that you feel comfortable, then it kinda becomes second nature to you. Just wanted to share my point and thanks again for the amazing video as always !

Merci pour le feedback! En fait, selon les recherches, si on reçoit suffisamment d'input compréhensible, on acquiert la grammaire de façon naturelle. Même les règles d'orthographe s'acquièrent naturellement si on lit beaucoup! Dans cette vidéo, je parle de l'oral, mais l'input compréhensible, c'est également à l'écrit. La lecture permet d'acquérir plus de vocabulaire et des structures grammaticales plus complexes; Krashen en parle souvent. Pour les personnes qui apprennent le français, il y a d'ailleurs des petits livres écrits par des profs et qui sont faciles à lire. Le problème avec l'étude des règles grammaticales, c'est qu'elles sont seulement utiles si on a le temps de les appliquer. C'est le cas à l'écrit, mais pas en conversation! 😊

I discovered this very recently. I watch a lot of Netflix in French. I don’t understand everything but some words stick out and I get the jist. Later on in my everyday life, I find out there are words and phrases that I don’t know I know. Turn on a VPN and change it to France or Montreal and you’ll find lots of content that’s in French. Btw, I love your videos!

Great video, I was actually trying to find a game to play in French and funnily enough I already bought Sang-froid Tales of werewolves years ago, didn't realize it had a good french translation.

J'apprécie beaucoup ça. J'ai tout juste commencé à utiliser le TPRS pour enseigner le français à mes élèves suite à la recommendation d'une collègue. Moi j'adorerais que vous fassiez une série ou une vidéo avec des astuces, etc., pour les profs de langues qui veulent utiliser ce méthodei, ça serait cool aussi. Merci comme toujours pour vos vidéos, elles m'aident pas mal comme nouvel enseignant!

Wow, c'est excellent! Vous habitez dans quel pays? Je pense que le TPRS est surtout connu et utilisé aux États-Unis. Merci pour la suggestion, et je suis vraiment contente que mes vidéos soient utiles!!! 😊 (En attendant, Susan Gross a beaucoup d'information sur son site internet. C'est elle qui m'a donné ma première formation en TPRS. Elle est vraiment excellente!!!)

Has anyone determined how to find the transcripts on the KZread app as opposed to a browser?

Do I have to learn normal French first before I work on dialects? I'm gonna meet way more quebecois people than french people because of where I live and I want to be able to talk like them! :)

Look up words similial with french and english. Conjunction and all thst.

Différentes sources en ligne suggèrent autour de 600 heures, avec les méthodes habituelles, pour atteindre le niveau B2. J'ai l'impression qu'avec l'input compréhensible, ça peut être plus rapide, ou en tout cas plus agréable! 😄 Et l'acquisition sera plus solide (et garantie) qu'avec les méthodes traditionnelles, qui ont un taux d'échec et d'abandon assez élevé...

Votre mandarin m'a franchement choqué, votre prononciation, surtout des tons, est super bonne! Idem pour l'espagnol.

Oui tout comme vous je suis polyglotte :) J'ai étudié la linguistique et français a l'université, avec le mandarin, et j'ai aussi vécu en Chine (j'y ai enseigné dans une école primaire) L'espagnol j'apprends depuis très tôt (même que je sois anglophone total) , et je me suis formé dans l'enseignement d'immersion bilingue anglais-espagnol (les communautés intérieures de la Californie, où j'habite, ont énormément d'étudiants qui arrivent à la maternelle avec l'espagnol comme langue maternelle). D'une certaine façon, l'espagnol j'ai appris pour l'aspect pratique, le français pour passion :) Je suis très heureux que le hasard m'ait conduit à enseigner le français !

Ah, c'est un sujet qui m'intéresse beaucoup, mais je n'ai jamais vu de recherches au sujet de l'ordre d'acquisition pour le français. Pour les articles, j'ai lu que c'était le cas pour l'espagnol - les articles sont acquis en dernier lieu, même si c'est théoriquement facile à comprendre. J'ai effectivement l'impression que c'est la même chose en français. Mes étudiants de niveau B2 continuent à faire des erreurs à l'oral, en parlant de manière spontanée, avec les articles, surtout les articles contractés comme "au" et "du". Ils connaissent la règle, bien sûr, mais c'est difficile de l'appliquer quand on n'a pas le temps d'y penser. Même chose avec le pronom "en". C'est un sujet très complexe!!! 😊

Bonjour! Je suis Québécoise mais j’aime votre channel! :) J’ai regardé la vidéo ci-dessus parce que je veux apprendre l’Ukrainien et le Russe. Je voudrais bien essayer le truc avec l’imput mais c’est vraiment pas évident quand l’alphabet n’est pas le même! 😅 Je dois apprendre l’alphabet russe et l’alphabet ukrainien. (Malgré que ce soit l’alphabet cyrillique, il y a des lettres qui existe dans une langue mais pas dans l’autre.) En plus l’Ukrainien n’est pas comme le Russe. Si je me rappelle bien ils partagent 60% des mots. L’Ukrainien est plus proche du polonais selon ce que j’ai lu. Je souhaite apprendre ces deux langues à cause du Président Zelensky. Avant il était acteur/comédien et j’ai découvert son travail et j’adorerais comprendre sans les sous-titres. ;) Ce qui me fait penser à une question. Depuis des années je veux apprendre le japonnais et j’écoute des animés japonnais et sous titrés en anglais mais malgré les nombreuses heures d’écoute, je connais quelques mots sans plus. Je n’arrive pas à retenir l’information. :( Avez-vous un truc pour ça? Merci! Bravo pour votre travail sur le channel! J’aime beaucoup les vidéos variés que vous faites. :)

Merci pour les commentaires! Pour l'alphabet différent, tu peux lire au sujet du "Cold Character Reading" pour le chinois; la théorie est que si tu as déjà acquis le mot, ça va être facile de reconnaître l'écriture. Et pour le japonais, il faut y aller graduellement! "Input compréhensible" veut dire que tu comprends ce qui est dit, même si tu ne connais pas les mots. L'input "incompréhensible" ne mènera pas à l'acquisition... Bonne chance! 😊

Mais effectivement je fais un peu d’écoute de russe et d’ukrainien chaque jour depuis le début de l’invasion en Ukraine et je commence à reconnaître certains mots lorsque je les vois dans les sous-titres. Je commence à bien me rappeler de l’alphabet. :) J’ai vu sur certains sites web qu’il n’est pas recommandé d’apprendre 2 langues aussi semblables que le russe et l’ukrainien car c’est plus mélangeant mais que deux langues différentes comme justement le japonnais et une des deux langues seraient plus facile. :) Maintenant il me reste à décider laquelle apprendre en premier avec le japonnais car je veux apprendre les deux pour deux raisons différentes. Haha… pas facile de décider! Merci encore pour votre réponse! 😁

To be honest with you, Quebec French people always complain that people are not trying to speak French in Quebec. Did it ever occur to that may be one of the reasons is that we are taught to standard French in school, and when we go out into the real world, we’re listening to people speak in Quebec French and we don’t understand what they’re saying? Pretty hard to practice when we’re taught something that’s almost a completely different language in school. But I think we’re all trying our best to practice to the best of our ability. And yet they keep making all these laws that push us further and further into marginalization. As Anglophones.

Hum... La série "M'entends-tu" est excellente, mais assez difficile à comprendre à cause du niveau de langue populaire... Par contre, avec les sous-titres, ça pourrait être une bonne option! 😊

On acquiert une langue sans s’en rendre compte. Il suffit d’écouter et peut-être voir s’il y a des sous-titres des choses qu’on comprend
