Most of us believe that a good way to arrange our lives is by minimizing suffering for ourselves and for those around us.
In his latest book, Paul Bloom lays out an argument that human beings aren’t exactly wired that way - and that this may actually be a good thing.
Human beings will often choose their own suffering (even extreme forms of it) in order to gain everything from control over our environment to visceral pleasure.
In today’s conversation, Paul and Tom dive deep into the evolutionary underpinnings of chosen suffering, the biological roots of human morality, the relationship between sex and religion, how to live a meaningful life, and much more!
You can learn more about many of the topics covered in today’s conversation in Paul’s new book, The Sweet Spot: The Pleasures of Suffering and the Search for Meaning.

QUOTES:
“I think we have a family of motivations. It includes happiness, which as you point out, can mean different things. It includes pleasure, it includes meaning (whatever that is), it includes morality, maybe it includes beauty, it includes truth. …and a good life is sort of trying to maximize and balance them as best as possible.” [03:20]
“What it is to be a good person, for you and me, differs from what it would have been to be a good person 500 years ago, because we know more stuff now.” [07:47]
“We're often in our heads, and it's uncomfortable. We're thinking about the future, we're mulling over the past, we're very conscious of our bodies, we're conscious of how we look, we're conscious of this voice in our heads, and sometimes sharp and sudden pain can bring us out of it.” [11:06]
“Natural selection did not evolve us to have a good time. It evolved us to survive and reproduce… some degree of buzzing in your head is actually important. Not fun, but important.” [15:05]
“Life isn't the kind of thing that has an intrinsic meaning. People can choose activities that are meaningful, because they meet certain criteria - some objective criteria - but [it’s] also subjective. What might be meaningful for you might not be for me, and vice versa.” [37:06]
“An old-time shrink would say, “Oh, my God, you got to learn to love yourself.” But maybe the advice is, you got to learn to do something that would make your self-esteem more deserved.” [51:28]
“Even six month old babies make moral judgments. You show them one-act plays where one person is helping another one and other ones are hindering another one… and they prefer the good guy.” [1:09:53]

By facing my dragons; those things which drag-on when i don't face them: confronting the monster in the room, be that room, that space internal and or external. Also, a request dear Tom: can you please hire or allocate someone from your team to make 5, 10 or 15 minute summaries of these epic interviews? Reason: I, and thus surely many others, wish we could watch all of these interviews but working hard & living busy lives we just don't physically have time to do so without skipping sleep which isn't healthy or possible in the long term. Immense, intense and tremendous gratitude for you, yours, and what you all do. God protect and bless you all!

It is strange how after so many interviews Tom is still trying to separate humans from nature (nature vs nurture). There is no separation humans are part of nature and the environment (morality does not exist, it is relative and dependent on social, cultural, religious, physical environment). This guest did not answer a single question, just dancing around...

I’ve found my purpose and the meaning of my life being honest with my self. This hasn’t been an easy path but I’ve found immensely helpful reading about and listening to fantastic people like you. Learning something new every day, working out (as your wife) at least one hour per day, caring my diet….. trying to do the best of my self any single day not forgetting that some days it works some days it doesn’t but there is always something for being grateful for. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR INSIGHTS ☺️

"The world is a hungry and lonely place. It is full of fantasy and folly. Its suffering is profound. Its confusion is deep. Its violence is sickening. Its possibilities are great. Who can see these things but those who realize that they have come from beyond the world to give something? They realize this because it is something they can feel. It is not an emotion; it is something they feel. They feel that they have come here for a reason. It is something that they cannot yet define, but they cannot make it go away either. Something greater is calling them. This is purpose. Eventually, if they respond to this, they will begin their preparation. This is purpose. If they stay with their preparation and advance within it, without trying to alter it or change it, they will begin to gain greater insight and understanding. This is purpose. If they continue and do not fall prey to the misperception that they are advanced, then Knowledge will slowly germinate within them, and their perception and understanding of things will change. Their awareness of the mystery of life will grow more and more profound, and their ability in life-in their relationships, in their career, in all their activities-will deepen. This is purpose. At some point, they will give themselves to something that involves other people in service to the world in one capacity or another according to their nature and their design. It will be natural for them to give themselves in this way, as it would be unnatural for them to decline it. This is purpose." A quote from *Greater Community Spirituality* - Chapter 5: What is Human Purpose?

There at 26:08 -- the self-imposed pain of running a marathon, or climbing a mountain -- I have affinity for this context since I run 100+ mile ultras and climb peaks that require several days (and sometimes weeks) to summit. However - I do not ascribe the situation to dealing with pain or suffering; rather, it is a matter of enduring lengthy self-imposed discomfort, while at the same time, experiencing the growing exaltation of working to achieve something grand on the human scale -- it is driving toward a personal accomplishment that is mathematically off-axis in comparison to the common normality of the general population.

I’m on the exercise boat like Lisa, except I lean toward aerobic exercises for extended periods of time. Things like endurance running, hiking and dance. These work for relieving stress more than anything else and I don’t end up still feeling anxious after a good workout because I go for hours, however long my body tells me I need and I go to failure. So I feel physically depleted at the end and often ready for a nap, but my mood changes completely and I always feel exuberant afterwards. As to Tom’s question why that is…I think it’s multifaceted but in part it feels like honoring my body’s flight or fight response. When I have high anxiety my urge is to run from the threat, so going out and actually running honors my body’s physiological response to stress and abates it. Also, essentially forces me to remember to breathe deeply and the physical exertion creates a comfortable pain that pulls me out of my head and into my body so it does feel as close to meditation as I can get. Lastly, I think there’s something to the concept of bilateral stimulation as a way to address depression and anxiety and running and hiking are a great way to get that bilateral stimulation.

Depression, from psychological point of view, is just collapse of structure defining hierarchy of values. In other words, depressed people can't find meaning in pursuing some goals that are defined by values that are on the top of existing structures of hierarchy values believed by other people.

In my opinion, modern slavery is present in almost all soceities. It takes two forms: the employee and the convict. The minimum wage is a great example of being stuck in a cycle of debt and to be in debt is to be a slave; the most one can earn in a lifetime on minimum wage is no more than 2 million ... or less. Most cultures don't provide a self-sustaining living wage that allows them to develop savings.. More importantly " life, liberty and property". The only way to "earn more time" is to provide value greater than a trivial service. A mass majority of people do not have the skills to escape the rat race. Society then has a majority of people trapped in a system that binds them to service using debt so that they may acquire "life, liberty, and property". The convict is someone who has debt that must be paid with time and labour. After conviction, they are bound to a debt of time and service. The correlation between being forced to do labour in prison and forced to earn money to survive in soceity is parallel.

"I've been in some insanely stressful situations where hundreds of millions of dollars were on the line"... Wow. I got surprised by this attachment and stress over material things. Actually, sorry, over the "story of money", it's not even material if we think about it. Haven't been to really stressful situations yet: saving someone from a burning car, walking along an abyss in a blizzard...

I appreciate Tom's willingness to dive into topics. However, I think the conversation would have benefitted greatly by incorporating a few different perspectives like Spiral Dynamics, the work of Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, and perhaps the insights of Brandon Ambrosino. Since Tom is a learner, I hope he will accept the challenge. We can only speak from what we know ... so while saying "I haven't really studied the history on this but my guess is ________" is a good place to start ... it leaves huge gaps that can lead to false assumptions and conclusions. Just a suggestion :)

Saying meditation is only good for some people is like saying excercise is only good for some people. You're over intellectualizing a physiological response. The only argument to be had is how meditation is performed and how effective that is for you and your needs.

Yeah, but if you propose that there are some moral truth carried by "genes" as evolutionary process then the question is: why slavery existed in the first place? I mean, it suggest that some people didn't assume slavery is bad, because if it was universal moral truth "written in our genes" then no one would own slaves in the first place. Clearly, there's much more than evolutionary element to consensus of objective morality problem. Actually, I don't even think that some moral values are compatibile with darwinian evolutionary competitive model of natural selection. Shouldn't 100% darwinian creature follow purely Machiavellian "morality"?

I disagree with Tom. For example I’m highly motivated successful and I do not do anything for contributing to the group. I do not care what people think. I do not care what people expect of me. I do what I want when I want . I’m very selfish for myself . I just turned 30, I own multiple rental properties , have a landscaping business, make good money, could retire very soon if I wanted to. I do nothing for groups . Just for myself . Because once I’m set up I’ll start a family. I’m a lone wolf never once wanted teams friends groups. I go out and attack alone. So be careful before you over generalize . Everyone diffenrt man. These talks are only entertainment purposes there’s zero learns here it’s all speculation. Talking about humans brains , space , stocks, moods, why people do what they do, it’s allllll entertainment . Zero evidence backing anything . Even with science, science changes all the time with new evidence . I know we’ll never figure anything out regarding human nature. We’ll never figure it out . We’re all completely different

Hey hey, Paul. Better give your book that subtitle: against empathy, unless you're about to become a shrink. Also I do not see ordinary people being able to differentiate internally between compassion and empathic linking. Unless they're psychopathic. I might also give to consider that not every bad feeling must be avoided just because it hurts. Why should I filter the reasons at all? Wasn't this the lesson here? Suffering is okay, get on with the show? Apply it to other people's emotions, too, and get on. You might be convinced you're onto something but all you do is suppress human nature and this always shoots you in the face later on in form of psychological problems. Simply put. You can meditate your asses off, you'll still feel it when someone hammers their own thumb flat and that is a _good_ thing. It's part of the early stages of the infantile learning process so kids know that something is bad for others. Compassion is not necessarily the most primitive and available form of learning to not do something to someone because it might hurt. That's a rather complex pattern learned later. So rather than focussing on eliminating how we feel, focus on getting rid of childish learning patterns as grown ups. Self-improvement at all costs is also called an obsession. And those are not to be taken lightly, Tom.

Also, I don't like that host is trying to explain everything in darwinian models because it's just kind of materialistic autism. Darwinian evolutionary model is deterministic in its nature which introduces many problems about complete ontology of human being. True self-consciousness is not deterministic process. Critical thinking (and falsification process) is not deterministic process. Otherwise it's pointless to think if the result is determined by default. Let's think about it for a moment. How deterministic process can observe and question itself? It doesn't make sense. It's illogical. Learning process is in a nutshell: to question your own thoughts and beliefs. How can it be deterministic? I don't think that complete nature of reality is based only on materialistic determinism and you can see why by few examples I have shown above which is enough to use Hempel's Ravens Paradox that falsify darwinian model as only source of human ontology (proof by contraposition).
