Lace knitting can be daunting to knitters who have never tried it...written instructions, charts, yarn-overs, decreases -- not to mention keeping track of where you are and blocking it when you're finished. With a little help, these techniques are simple to learn, and the reward of a finished lace scarf is totally worth it.

Ive been glued to your videos. You are detailed and have a mesmerising voice. I dont know if i will ever knit that intricately, but i watch you as opposed to netflix. Thank you for sharing.
I’m new to knitting and I’m thankful you’ve put up theses videos. I’m grateful for your expertise and generosity.
You're such a great teacher! Thank you for sharing the "life line" tip. I will be using that in my own projects from now on.
More videos please!!! I really enjoy your knitting tutorials!! These tutorials are so helpful and are the best ones I have seen on KZread!!!
Thank you so much.You're such a great teacher.I was looking for a new pattern to knit a scarf for my niece.I'll use this pretty pattern for many scarves to knit in future.
Love your videos and patterns. Just a helpful tip, I use trimmer line for blocking wires for my scarfs. It's very inexpensive and works wonderfully on very fine lace projects.
You are one of the BEST knitting video maker. You so good in teaching and helping ppl to learn. I love your site 😍😍
VeryPink Knits excellent tutorial !!! the lifeline technique is one that I had never come across before (as a beginner) but one that makes a lot of sense to use ... thanks again Stacy for all of your hard work that goes into these videos

Excellent tutorial. Has taken the mystery out of lace knitting.
Lots of information. I especially liked the 'lifeline' in case of a dropped stitch. Such a simple idea but very affective. Subscribed! (beautiful nails btw)
This is so helpful! I loved how you showed how to use a life line and block it. Thank you!
This was an excellent tutorial I'm going to check out some of your other things you made it look very easy❤
It really depends on what the designer of the pattern has designated the gray boxes to be - you'll need to look at the chart key for a good answer. Most designers (myself included) use gray boxes to indicate "no stitch". In other words, a spot on the chart where there used to be a stitch, but a decrease in a previous row has eliminated that stitch. Hope that helps!
The grid on my blocking board is 30 x 48", and yes - it folds in half, with handles. It's quite heavy, and it would be really cumbersome otherwise! I don't know the exact location of where I bought it. I got it from an eBay store that sells many of these. If you're shopping for one, I recommend getting one this size. It's big enough for an adult sweater, which is important.
Thank you for your very quick response, I have never heard the term either, although I have been knitting for many years! Unfortunately, as this pattern is in an old book (bought at a yard sale) I am unable to ask the designer. Maybe I will just try 'yarn over' and see what I get! Thank you again for your reply
Wow, i'm in LOVE with this tutorial ♥
Learned so much with this tutorial. Thank you!!!!!
@gekapoo I just use normal sewing pins, and I've never had a problem with the garment being wet enough (for long enough) to rust the pins. I've been using the same pins for years, and never a hint of rust. There is no need to buy special blocking pins.
Thanks for the videos! You are a great teacher!
I love the color of your finger nail polish!! I want to go get a manicure now.
Great videos as always, and great tips. Instead of using a row counter, I just tally my rows (including WS) as I complete them. For myself, I always have a notebook with my knitting with the pattern I'm working on (I can't print out patterns).
okay thanks so much! your patterns are beautiful and so much fun to knit! :)
thank you for this detailed tutorial, I'm a beginner so I'm wondering if it is alright if I use straight needles instead of circular ones?
@rohiniprabhu Yes, straights or circulars are fine for this pattern.
The needles I use most often are Addi Turbos. They are sold at many retailers - you can just google the name to see where to find them. Good luck!
If you're following the written pattern, you should get a zig-zag pattern. The pattern in lace oftentimes doesn't show up well until after you've finished the item, then washed it, and set it out flat to dry. My guess is that you'll be able to see the pattern better after the scarf is washed and blocked. Hope that helps!
I LOVE Tippy, he is awesome!
Hi! I am watching a lot of your videos - they are so easy to understand and informational! I wanted to ask a question about interchangeable circular needles - I noticed that you sometimes use Addi. Do you have preference between AddiClick Lace (the pointier, nickel plated one) and AddiClick Turbo (or Basic - the round, nickel plated one), if you have used both? Do you find it easier to knit things like k2to with the lace point, or do you feel that the regular one is fine for most knitting? Thank you!
Excellent tutorial, as usual! I love all your tutorials, and although I've been knitting for ages I've learnt a lot with you. Thank you! I was just wondering if the pattern for that lovely red shawl is available on your website. I looked it up but couldn't find it. I'd love to knit that!
VERY NICE! THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO BEEN LOTS OF HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much Staci!
I recommend a long-tail cast-on knitted cast-on - good, all-purpose COs.
i heard some where that you need special pins for blocking, sewing pins wont work because they rust? how true is this? where do i find blocking pins if i cant use sewing pins? my craft store doesnt seem to have anything but sewing pins.
Hi, this is beautiful, - can you tell me please is 'yarn over' the same direction as 'one over' in the pattern I have? Thank you your tutorial is great!
You can use either straight or circular needles for this, no problem. :) Good luck!
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you very much! I've watched your website as well, but I can't find the pattern for the other more complicated shawl that you showed in this video. Could you please let me know if you have any video or pattern on your website? Thanks very much again! :)
I always loose track of pattern repeats , where would I place stitch markers to help
I'm new at lace knitting but would like to knit a lace shawl that starts in the round. I am using the pinhole cast on for 8 stitches which uses a crochet hook. I then knit the first round on dpns before starting the pattern. The center appears to form a bubble on the right side. Another issue is that the first round after cast on is K, yo to end ending with a total of 16 stitches. This means a yo at the end of each dpn. How to anchor the yo as I try to k the first stitch on the next dpn? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

+Maria kovar - while I'm always here to help with any questions you have on my patterns, I'm afraid I can't help much with details on another designer's pattern. I suggest contacting the designer directly - Ravelry message is a good way to reach them. Good luck!
Working this stitch combination should give you the zig-zag pattern. Maybe you just haven't knit enough yet to see the zig-zags? Or it's possible that your stitches are very loose, so the pattern is difficult to see? Try applying some steam and stretching out the lace (as I demonstrate in the video) to see if that helps. You're also welcome to send me a photo to my email address to get more advice. (Sorry, KZread won't let me give you my email here in the comments. Just visit my website.)
Hi Staci, I have a doubt, in the Row 2 said: 3K, P to the Last 3 stitches, here is my doubt, how purl an "Yard over stitch"? because in the Row 3 i lost the 43 stitches That would be in the pattern. Thanks sorry for my english haha
Hi Staci. What are the dimensions of your blocking board? Can it fold in half? Can you give the exact name and place from where you bought it? Thank you.
Just wondering do you perfair knitting or crochet just wondering,btw great video can't wait to give the pattern ago😆
I can't answer your question for certain, as "one over" is not a knitting term that I'm familiar with. I recommend contacting the pattern designer and asking them if "one over" is the same as a "yarn over". Good luck!
If you are comfortable with casting-on, knitting, purling, and binding-off - this tutorial is probably a good pattern for you to try. If you'd like to work on something easier first, you may want to try my tutorial called "Learn to Knit Your First Cap". That is a good project for someone who knows how to knit and purl, but still needs practice before tackling something more difficult. You can search for this tutorial on my channel page. Good luck!
Thank you, Staci!
Do you per fair knitting or crochet?
Hi Stacey, thank you for sharing this video tutorial on lace knitting. I will start soon with this pattern as i like it very much , yet i also like the pattern on the red shawl . What is the name for that pattern on the red shawl? Thank you very much . aurora b

+aurora b - you'll always find information on everything you see in the video in the video description field: The pink shawl I show in the video is from a pattern called Ishbel: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ishbel
What is the size of yarn and needle did you use ??
The scarf on the mannequin is very pretty. Which yarn and pattern did you use for it?
Could we use acrylic yarn?
The scarf on the mannequin is the Clapotis pattern. I've just added a link to the pattern in the video description field, just below the video.
Thank You Very Much 💕
Cool! I've only been looking at the written instructions for this stuff and didn't have a clue as to the whole yarn over thing. Quick question though: Do you have to block after every wash with less temperamental yarns like polyester or cotton or at all really?
The red (it's actually pink) shawl I show in the video isn't my pattern - it's called Ishbel, and you can find it on Ravelry!
how many stitches do you cast on?
Thank goodness for you and your videos! I enjoy knitting so much more because I can always find answers to my questions at VeryPink Knits on KZread. I wonder about what to do when your scarf is longer than your blocking board? Do you fold it in half to block it?
@verypinkknits
Жыл бұрын
For long items, I usually block on the bed. :)
I don't recommend knitting this pattern (or any lace pattern) with any fiber except wool or another animal fiber. Knitting this with cotton or a synthetic yarn would result in a scarf that showed little or no lace pattern! Using wool allows you to stretch it out when it's wet, revealing the lace pattern.
Hi mines doesnt look like this, still looks pretty but instead of a zig zag effect with the yarn overs these are sitting on top of one another like a ladder, where have I gone wrong?
That pattern is called Ishbel, and is not my design. I have added a link to the Ravelry page for that pattern in the video description field, just below the video. Hope that helps!
I just love you!
Where can you purchase that row counter?
Thanks for the reply
Depends on the acrylic yarn, but on the whole, lace should be knit with 100% wool.
Hi Staci. I’m excited to try this pattern. I would like to make a narrower scarf, using lace weight yarn. Can you please tell me what multiple that I need to cast on in order to achieve the patterning? Thanks in advance.

@@verypinkknits Hi staci. No worries. I figured it out! Good learning process for me :)
how many stitches in this pattern?
Oh sorry, my other question was, do you mark down in the pattern where you place the lifeline? For example, if the pattern is complex, I might put one in every certain row in the pattern? And then I would mark the pattern where it was, so that if I did have to frog back to the lifeline at least I would know where I was starting back from? I have never used lifelines before, but it looks like a wonderful idea, as I have had to pull out patterns way back in order to correct one mistake, but then to find my place in the pattern also to begin correctly again. Sometimes, it’s really hard to tell on some patterns although I try to count how many rows I am taking out so I will know how far back I went, but mistakes can get made!
@verypinkknits
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you do want to know where you put the lifeline in the pattern. I usually complete a pattern repeat - for example, if Rows 1-8 are repeated in a pattern, I will complete Row 8, then string a lifeline. Then I have a lifeline every 8 rows, and if I have to rip back, I know that I need to start knitting again on Row 1.
I have some questions? What is the best weight of yarn to work with for lace? What sizes of needles are good to work with for lace? Then what type of needles is good to work with? Thank you in advance.
@verypinkknits
9 жыл бұрын
Anisa Reynolds - if you've never worked a lace pattern before, I highly suggest following a pattern that spells out the yarn weight and needle size to use. There are no standards for this. There are several needles designed for lace knitting that work very well, just google "lace knitting needles" for options.
I love your videos! I have a question, I notice that your “yarn overs” go under the needle. I was taught when I was very young to do yarn overs so the yarn goes over the top of the right hand needle. Does it make a difference I wonder? Is the hole perhaps going to be larger as there is slightly more yarn used over the needle then when it is put under the needle? Hope you can make sense of this question, it really is a visual thing.
@verypinkknits

The way I work yarn-overs is the common way of doing it (there are exceptions, I have a video on YOs between knit and purl stitches). Wrapping the other way will still give you a YO, but you are correct - the YO will have more slack, and create a bigger hole. Which may or may not be desired.
Hi Staci, I just purchased your beautiful pattern and wanted to ask you please if using LOUET Gems yarn will work because it's a sport yarn instead of fingering. If so, what size needle should I use for the pattern to work up like the picture?( I had bought it for the Sharbella Shawl but after a multitude of tries I gave up. It never looked like the leaves in the picture) Thank you for your help!

Hi Staci, Forgive me for my ignorance, but the yarn your using for this scarf is Stroll with suggested needles 1-3, and your using size 7 needles. My yarn says suggested needle size 4. I thought that I would need your size 7 or 6? Am I missing something? Please confirm that If I use size 4 needle my scarf will turn out like yours?
@verypinkknits

Gosh, I'm sorry - that slipped my mind! I forgot that I used a big needle size in that pattern, thanks for bringing it up! Yes, you'll want to use a size 7 or 8...I'd recommend trying 8 first.
I use a lifeline sometimes and I write down which row my lifeline is on. I get confused some of the time :) I also pick a row and use the same row every time.
What is the cast on stitches and/or stitches needed for this specific pattern? I didn't see it in the video.
@verypinkknits

It's not in the video, it is in the pattern.
Hi Staci, does blocking apply to 100% acrylic yarn also?
@verypinkknits
7 жыл бұрын
No - you can follow the washing instructions on the label for acrylic yarns, they are not a good choice for most lace patterns.
Thank you
What was the number of stitches or originally cast on? It was nice to see an example of how to read those goofy charts, never have thought that was very user friendly way to track. Might rethink that now.

Can't yarn overs be purlwise or knitwise? How do we know which to do in any given pattern and which is it here?
@verypinkknits
4 жыл бұрын
Yarn-overs aren't really knit or purlwise, unless a pattern specifies otherwise, which is rare, they are just worked the same way. I demonstrate in the video how to work a YO. If you're working on another pattern and you're confused about working YOs between knit and purl stitches, this video should help: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ma6Y0dZqe7G_ndo.html
I keep ending with 9 stitches at the end of the first row instead of 7. Any ideas of where I am going wrong?

Remember to write down WHICH row you placed your "lifeline"...cause it's not easy to exactly see what row you were on, and exactly where to start again! 😔 I've had that issue! Lol

Yes, I recommend putting the lifeline in at the same row every time...like after you finish the pattern repeat. Then you know that the next row after the lifeline is always "Row 1".
