Proportions are one of the most difficult and challenging aspects of drawing to learn. In this video, I start with the basics and simplify.
Measuring techniques are going to be your biggest friend when it comes to determining proportions of any object or set of objects. The easiest way to understand proportions is by determining height and width of each object and comparing these to each other. Getting these basic measurements as close as possible to reality is going to be the key to creating more realistic sketches and drawings.

    Something I kinda realized was that the more episodes he makes, the less views the next one gets, and I think this is interesting bc it shows how many people are dedicated to learning these skills

    It might also be that people come to just find out about proportion (like I did), for example, and they might not need help with the other aspects of learning to draw. But I subscribed to his channel because he's a good teacher. I already feel more confident moving forward in my beginner Botanical Illustration class.

    I think parents want their kids to succeed. You could have gone into physical therapy assistant or nursing and worked your way up. I know people who have done that. My cousin wanted to teach art history after being accepted to med school. He chose the medical field and art as a hobby, so he could have a good retirement.

    There's a tool that architects use to take proportional measure by eye, like you do with the pencil and your fingertip. I don't know what that's called, but it looks like an X that has the middle adjustable. So you could open one end of it, take a measure and put the other end of it to your canvas/paper and it will be larger or smaller, but like by the same factor every time. It really helps.

  • @SchaeferArt

    @SchaeferArt

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes I know what you mean, it is a proportional divider. These can be useful for sure. It depends on your goals as well - for instance, for me personally.. a tool like that would hinder my ability to make correct judgements using my eye in the long run so I don't really use them. I tend to make a judgement, draw it and then only measure to check myself. But everyone is different :) and that's the beauty.

    Say if I had a camera and I angle it at a certain degree. Like instead of just looking at something head on (straight)…I'm looking at a view from a tilt above or of a tilt below like a diagonal angle. If I want my drawing to be recognizable proportionally the front of the object gives the illusion of being bigger while the back object is kind of downsized (although this also depends on the view of the object; it being diagonal from the back or diagonal from the front)…I don't know if this is clear But how would I be able to draw that effectively? I apologize, I would understand this being a confusing explanation, it's cool if you don't understand me.

    @@aditiarya457 I mean, if you can draw a little bit everyday, like 20-30 mins. That's a great habit to get into doing and you'll improve over time. If there's some days where you can draw for longer - even better. It all depends on what your goals are. It's very personal, so it's hard for me to give advice because everyone has different goals. But hopefully that helps. Just draw more. Stop thinking about it and start doing it :)

    Great video, but I think it would be better to actually show those cup and lemon, so we can see real sizes and proportions.

    I know what you mean but my intent was to illustrate the concepts, so in reality it doesn't matter what the actual proportions are. You can do this with any 2 objects you have laying around in your house. That's what I was trying to show :)

    about these proportions and so-shouldn't it be automatic in our brains? is it not "useles" to explain it like that? because, everybody feels and deep down actually knows that for instance ears are so and so to the face-everybody knows more or less human face....or anything else....I believe this sould be automatic in most cases...isn't it?

    You have to be proportional about it and that's where we get proportions from © SchaeferArt 3:10 You know. The same thing I heard about coding. You have to understand what these things do to understand those algorithms. Being honest, this thing makes me think that it is not even a tutorial. You basically say "If you want to understand proportions you have to understand proportions first". I'm not saying that this video is bad, actually, it is very informative... but you should work on how to explain things better. I can see clearly that you can draw and you can understand it well. But tutorials are about being able to share the experience as well, no matter how hard it is to explain. Still, it's ok, don't worry, just keep in mind that there is soil where questions can grow from

    I know what you mean. I’ve been planning a new video on proportions for quite a long time now, it’s just I really want to be able to break it down and explain it in the best way possible. I have some better ideas as far as demonstrating the concept so hopefully it will come out better than this older video. I appreciate your feedback!
