Learn To Do Forward Counter Turns - In Figure Skates!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello Skaters! Welcome back! Today I am going to share with you how to do all 4 Forward Counter Turns. This turn sets up like a bracket, facing away from your circle, and rotates away from the circle you are starting on. But that is where the similarities end. This turn changes circles, but stays the same edge after the turn. Here are some other turning tutorials that you might want to work on...

I remember taking my skating lessons and I got so far until we had to learn this! I struggled so so much and I got so frustrated. The teachers didn’t really help in explaining exactly how my foot has to be or how to move in the certain way to be able to turn quickly without tripping and falling. By the time the lessons ended, I couldn’t pass because I couldn’t do this turn! I got too frustrated to repeat the whole lesson because of this move. About 8 years later, I see this and it’s so well explained!! I absolutely love ice skating and always progressed with my own knowledge and research. Im definitely going to try it again when I go skating next!

Wow. I am so excited to see this video. Thank you for sharing. I would love to see the same content for the backward counter :). Anyway, I have a couple of questions: 1/ Are there other cool ways to initiate the counter? I have seen skaters pre-rotate their upper body before initiating the turn. 2/ I get called out for my flat edges on brackets and counters (not so much rockers and 3 turns). How can I absolutely guarantee strict edges as expected by some ice dance judges who are picky on edges? 3/ Why do I find it easier to do a bwd outside counter as part of a step sequence (such as fwd inside bracket into bwd outside counter or fwd inside choc into bwd outside counter) instead of a counter on its own? As always, your help is much appreciated.

I always enjoy the detail and precision of your videos a lot. Just one little thing that I'd wish to hear about (and see a bit more of) when talking about 3 turns, brackets, counters ...: the importance of the knee-bend / down up down motion ;) this is also a thing that some of my ice and inline skating instructors always emphasise on. Maybe you could integrate more of that into your rocker tutorial - which I hope that we are going to have soon 😇🙏🏻

Kinda late to watch the video this week 😅 Counter turns are a few months away for me since my brackets need more work right now. (The hands and free leg positions are so confusing! Even though I understand the logic, I still have to go over each bracket turn in my head for a few seconds to make sure.) Anyways, it’s good to know what’s next, so a huge thank you for the video. Now, to share my past week of skating… My wife had enough of my bruises, and said she’d get rid of my skates if I keep getting bruised from doing jumps. So no toe-loops and up for now. Just waltz and salchows. But the good thing is I can fine tune those basic jumps. Especially now that I’m trying to rebuild the salchow with back spin positions. Also, less jumps mean more footwork. I’m getting started with “cross-rolls.” (That’s what my coach calls them, maybe it’s called something else for you. They are like half circle edges with undercuts with the free leg) So yeah, I’m gonna be a footwork guy for a while.

Hey Julia! I have a problem at my rink where the smell of the ice is making me feel dizzy and nauseous. It has a strong chemical smell and i cant focus on my skating. An outdoor rink is way better because it’s doesnt smell but they dont coach on the outdoor rink :(. The smell is so distracting and makes me feel uncomfortable when skating. What should i do? Do you as a coach have any experience in this? Thanks in advance Julia!

Hm if a counter has to turn further than a bracket does that mean a rocker doesn't turn quite as far as a 3-turn -- and is that what's happening when every time I try a 3-turn I only get a quarter rotation? 🤣 I'll definitely try the trick with the leading hand - aside from balance etc, sometimes it helps me to have something to focus on so I don't overthink my feet and get my head in a tangle.

Half way through when you move onto the left forward outside you keep calling it a bracket 5:50ish... But you are still changing circles so are you doing counters still?

Oh my gosh. Did I call it a Bracket? Sometimes words and thought don’t line up! So sorry. Yes, I should have called it a counter.
