RECOMMENDED VIOLINS:
Fiddlerman violins are the only violins I currently recommend. You can choose the violin to suite you depending on your budget. Remember the cheaper you go (buying rubbish from Amazon for example), the worse the violin will be (garbage most likely) and the HARDER it will be to learn - which is why Fiddlerman violins are an excellent beginners choice:

HOW TO PLACE DOT/STICKERS ON YOUR VIOLIN:

HAVING TROUBLE TUNING YOUR VIOLIN?
This might help: • 5 ways to stop violin ... bubt if they are slipping a lot and you are having trouble tuning the violin, then you should get something better set up (see above).

Hi Alison, I usually never comment on YT but I just wanted to say a huge thank you for sharing your skills and making music education accessible and affordable to all. I went through your piano lessons a while back and am now trying the violin which has been a childhood dream. Your content is, as always, comprehensive but easy to follow. There are a lot of elements to the violin which make it a challenging instrument to learn but so far I have found it so much easier to connect the instrument to the sheet music which I have always struggled with on the piano. I am definitely subscribing to your Patreon. Thank you, you are an asset to the classical community!

This is the best way I've ever learned to read music! I "can" read music but only if I sit down and take my time remembering all the note places. I've played guitar for 16 years and gave up on reading music because it would never click on where the notes were. I mean, you don't really need to read music to play guitar. I picked up a violin last week and have followed your lessons here and wow. It's so easily clicking in my head what the notes on the sheet are saying to what strings and finger placement should be. I'm actually reading and playing along in time to what I see for the first time, and without having to look at what my hands are doing. It feels great.

As a beginner, I wanted to know it all so I could start playing songs so I rushed everything. I sounded like crapola. Frustrated, I took your advice from an older video where you mentioned you wouldn't practice intonation until you have the bowing down on open strings first for at least a month or more. I sucked it up and just practiced getting the tone and technique down by only bowing on the open strings. By golly you were right! Screeching gone. Even the dogs and cats don't scatter when I practice now. Best few months I ever spent . Thanks for the great advice, Alison.

Literally I'm having a blast!! I bought a really really cheap violin off amazon, just to learn the basics on tuning hold, bowing, and maintaing the violin, and learning wear the notes are and applying basic music theory to it. Once, I have all that down I will probably invest in a $250-$300 violin! I have played guitar for about 13 years, but I have always wanted to learn violin but always have been hesitant cause I never learned to read music, I only knew music theory in the sense of playing guitar which has helped with violin! these lessons are so exciting and each one as I progress gets more and more fun! I love this, Thank you so much Allison, you're the best!!

OMG Alison! I started Lesson 6 today and whew...it's hard, very hard. I want to stay with open strings. I spent 12 days on Lesson #5 and it became very comfortable 😌. My fingers are all over the place with Lesson #6. They are literally doing their own thing. I know I will improve over time. I find myself looking at the strings while playing instead of looking at the sheet music. I guess that's normal since my fingers don't know what to do. I don't have any real questions for now but I feel like I will be on Lesson #6 for at least a solid month 😭. Thank you for everything 🙏🏽

I'm excited to be ready to move into Lesson 6. I spent weeks working in the practice exercises in less 5 -- taking time to 'hit' only the proper open strings for each note, and running through each exercise at least three times perfectly before moving on. I broke both wrists last year (while dancing) and realize that poor steadiness bowing 'probably' is because I'm still building enough wrist strength and coordination so that I don't hit the neighbor-string. I developed a mental-picture to help me stay on each single string also... Maybe it's silly, but I think I need it -- So... 5:00 o'clock for the E-string, 4:00 o'clock for the A-string, 3:00 o'clock for the D-string, and 2:00 o'clock for the G-string. Not sure that's entirely kosher, but it seems to be helping me get on and stay on each string. Thanks for all your coaching -- and I like when you challenge us to practice and learn. I'm working up to 'rewarding' myself by purchasing your lesson books. Blessings!

As someone with a visual impairment and recovering from a shoulder/neck injury I found your explanation of the bow positions really helpful!! That's the biggest hurdle for me is holding both arms up at the right angles to play for sustained time periods. I can't always see clearly what angles she's holding the bow at (because of my eyes, not poor video making) and this verbal explanation you've got on about the clock positions really helped. Thanks!

Hi Alison, first of thank you so much for creating this channel. I was wondering, if you can't hear by ear what the right notes are yet, how do you practice this? I've got the doy stickers for 1st and 3rd finger and I got someone at a music shop check it for me if they were in the exact right spot. But do you first practice with the tuner next to it? So you know you're spot on? I'll keep scrolling through your other videos, in case I missed a video about this. Thank you.

Hi Allison! Thank you so much for making these videos! I am learning so much and really enjoying practicing alongside your instruction. I had a question though, I noticed on the “how to read violin music” pdf that the first finger more on the E string is marked as a sharp (#) but on the “first finger exercises” pdf this same note doesn’t have the sharp. Should I still play it as F#? Thanks! Any help would be appreciated :)

I really love this series! I used to think music is nothing for me, because I'm "too stupid" to understand anything. Now I realize that's not the case, I just never had someone explain anything to me properly! Thank you so much for providing us with this course I have something I struggle with, anytime I play 1st Finger Notes on the G or D String (especially D String) the sound is kind of muted and not clear. Not sure how to explain it, but it sounds a bit messy. I've tried everything from pushing the string down with more pressure, less pressure. Even bowing with more or less pressure, more near to the fingerboard or more in the middle between fingerboard and the bridge. Nothing really makes a difference. Is this something that will get better with practise or is there anything else I am doing wrong? I don't have this problem with the A and E string. My Open Strings all sound beautiful. I have the Stentor II violin with GDE factory strings and my A string is Dominant

I’m so happy to finally be able to move on to lesson 6, YAY!!! I already have a few questions though_ On exercise 2, what does the dot mean next to the open A? Also on exercise 5, what is the circle at the end?? Thanks to anyone for answering this☺️

Its all explained in lessons 11-20, but the dot next to any note means to add on half of the note. For example, if you have a 2 beat note, then a dot behind it, the dot of worth half of said note (1) and so you add on what the dot is worth (1) to the main note (2) and the whole thing is worth 3 beats. The 'circle' is a note that is worth 4 beats. I would worry about this so much now, just get used to playing and concentrating on the violin and which notes and what and where on both the violin and sheet music, as what you ask (in my opinion) is not crucial to know right now. It will be explained soon, when you do need to know.

Oops I rushed a little bit and I'm already playing twinkle twinkle little star :D Very out of tune tho, I don't have the stickers yet so I'm only guessing and using a tuning app. But it's nice for a change to play something that (almost) sounds like an actual song

Hello, Miss Alysson. First, I'd like to express my thanks to you, I'm an adult self learner and this has been great help. I have a few questions though. I use a tuner application to tune my violin, since my ears aren't accustomed to the notes just yet. My first question is regarding that, how much of a difference in frequency is acceptable? For example A is 440hz, is 441 acceptable? 439.7? Can mature musicians tell the tiniest difference in frequency or do they estimate within an acceptable range? Also for first finger notes, I've heard that a one millimetre displacement can cause a person to be out of tune, my ears can't tell the difference much now. So how do I know if I'm playing in tune while I'm practicing? Also, do you recommend that a person move on to the next lesson once they're able to play these exercises well, or once they're ready to remove the dot and recognise the notes by ear alone?

Thank you so very much for these lessons. While practicing with a metronome, what would you suggest for a tempo to be able to play the lesson before moving on to the next?

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

Depends on the exercise - but the speed I played them at would be what you should aim for. Rather than getting a number you can just set on your metronome and struggle to get there, I would suggest you start the metronome at a silly slow speed and play them at that speed before you increase the number by say 10. I also think that it should be you who decides the speed during your practise - you will learn and understand better this way as you will start to know what you can and cant do and how to progress and how to practise. Start SLOW, then build up.

Hello! Your lessons are super helpful and an invaluable source of education for beginners like myself. Thank you so much! I was wondering, however, if you had any tips on how to play these exercises (or play any piece in general) while reading the music at the same time. Is that something one just gets better with through practice, or are there any specific tips to follow? Once again, thank you so much!

I originally put dots based on a tuner while waiting for chart. The finger sticker (so to speak) was off, so I double checked with my tuner and the chart was in fact a bit off (which is major for violin). Went to reviews and a lot of people were saying it was off. They are harder to see for playing position than dots too.
