I found your channel last night and this is the second video I’ve watched. You are an amazing teacher! I’ve learned so much from them both. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of Canva and Photopea, too. I can’t wait to go through your library.

Yes I actually do! I’ve been struggling with making second layer. It worked once last night but all the other time, when I select pixels for the second time, it selects the entire square. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong (I use Mac) and why it worked just once… I must have had the magic pro hands like yours just for that one time!!

@@learncanvawithgreg So kind of you to follow up! Yes I got it figured out now. I am not computer expert so sometimes, Mac vs Windows conversion for short cut puzzles me because a quick google search does not always come accurate 😓 Thank you again!!

Hi Greg, do you have a video or can guide me on adding an outline around a frame to make a stroke effect to the frames I make, TIA?

This is essentially what I teach in this video. But, perhaps you mean a stroke where there's a space between the frame and the stroke? I believe you used the word "offset" in one of your other comments. If this video doesn't help and you still have questions, just point me to an example image or try to give me more specific details of what you want to create so I can understand better and I will help if I can. cheers, Greg

May I ask what is your opinion about photopea vs gimp?

  • @learncanvawithgreg

As a longtime Photoshop user, I've never used GIMP, but I've known people who have used it and liked it and I know it has a strong user community who use it as an open source alternative to Photoshop. I think Photoshop is more polished and has more advanced features than Gimp or Photopea. I have been doing a lot of Photopea tutorials for Canva users for a few reasons: 1)It has a free version and functionality that can fill in some Canva gaps 2) The interface mimics Photoshop which I know really well so it's easy for me to teach 3) It's web-based and easy to get started with As an option that you have to download and install, Gimp might be great for people who have the patience to do so and with powerful computers they can leverage, but having to download and install may be a hurdle for some. Having something that is web-based and can be accessed from anywhere you have a device with an internet connection is something Photopea has going for it. At the end of day, I think it just depends on the end user and what option makes the most sense for their needs and their budget.

@@learncanvawithgreg Thank you for your detailed reply! I recently found your channel and it has been so informational. My husband is a gimp user and he loves it as an alternative for photoshop. I used it for a little but it does not make so much sense how it works and I never try learning any further. I love Canva and started to learn some of the photopea function (as you always say) Canva doe not do everything. Thank you again for your thoughts. I always love learning from experts!!

After you upload the image before you started anything, you added layer1 that’s white background and you have that throughout the video… did you just add the new layer before doing outlines? And is that process necessary? I was a bit confused because I don’t know photopea so well (I only know certain things that I learned from KZread videos to do specific tasks😂) and when I did your frame method, I just did without the 1st layer and I think it worked …?

Correct Ayaka, I think I had a pause in my recording where I added in that layer (sorry for any confusion that cause 😀) just as a background layer and for a little contrast, and then I turn off that layer before exporting as it wasn't something I wanted to bring back to Canva. Photopea, like any software, has a learning curve so it just takes a bit of practice. Just reach out with any questions you might have. cheers, Greg

I may have just figured it out! I think on Mac, you need to do command + click to select the element for the second time!

@@ayakaganig Yes, Mac and Windows have slightly different keyboards so on Mac it's Cmd + Click to select all of the pixels in a layer while on Windows it's Ctrl + Click. : ) Seems like maybe you have things sorted now, but if you run into other questions just let me know. cheers, Greg

Thanks! I got it now. It was a bit difficult as for the first layer, double finger click gives me ‘select pixel’ usually (which is how I usually do it) but for some reason the second time around doesn’t show the same pop up selection and I really had to figure command click way!

After I remove the background, I go to shadows and add an outline.

  • @learncanvawithgreg

Hi Fae, yes, that's a viable method! The one thing I don't love about that method is that scales your image down as it applies the outline vs. just starting at the outer bound of the image and applying outwards, but in some instances that won't matter so it really just depends on use case and what works for you. : ) Have a great day! cheers, Greg
