When I needed a brush-up from your video, I searched and searched and could not find your video. Finally, I looked back on my KZread history and found your video! They said to save an svg so I did and it didn’t show up in photopea, THEN they didn’t teach how to create a path, and said to save it as a psd 🤦‍♀️ it was very frustrating! I almost didn’t watch yours because I had watched three and they all said the same darn thing 😞 so thanks for actually teaching us the proper way! ALSO can you make a video to show us how to make like a frame on the frame, like how some have ornate frames like a mirror? Also how about making one design with separate frames…..

@@Dawns_Creative_Carousel for one design with separate frames, you just want to turn anything that will be its own frame into a vector mask. I have another KZread tutorial talking about this (creating collage/split frames), but essentially the process in the same....you're just going through the process a few times so that you have multiple vector masks...one for each element that will be a frame. Then, they all should come through when you export as a PDF. You could, of course, also create the frames separately and then compile them into a design in Canva so it's whatever workflow is going to make the most sense for you. For ornate frames, I think you just mean a frame that then has a really decorative border or design element paired with it, yes? In this case, you could either create the decorative element in a program like Photoshop/Photopea/Illustrator or you could use Canva elements to pair with a frame. But the custom frame creation process would stay the same. If you need me to run through an example for you then just point me to something similar to what you'd like to create and I'll give it a go. cheers, Greg

For your question, when you say "separate sections of the design" I'm thinking maybe your asking about having multiple frames in your design, but feel free to clarify if I'm missing aspects of your question. But, the key thing to remember is each vector mask that is part of your Photopea file when you export to PDF will be processed into Canva as a frame. So, how you set these up will give you full control over how they get processed by Canva and then, of course, the same Canva frame rules apply so you can still always crop and reposition individual photos within individual frames. If you haven't watched this other video on this channel,Canva Split/Collage Frames & Rotation Demystified kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpx7mZutfrqyYrA.html , then you might find it helpful as I walk through a basic example showing you 4 distinct areas could become one frame or 4 frames depending on how you choose to set it up and also I go over tricks you can use to help deal with how you might want content rotated/oriented within a frame. And here comes another great thing: I created the custom image in under one minute (58 seconds) on my OLD SAMSUNG PHONE! As photo pea is an online service you are completely free from the OS you are working on. Creating custom frames in the train on the way to work might turn out to become a new hobby 😅.

@@learncanvawithgreg I have another question, if I may... Have you encountered some issue when you finished making the final frame and download all together as multiple pages of PDF file, when you import it again, some of the frames won't work (more detailed design ones especially). Pictures clips in the original rectangle without any shape and when you delete it, it delete the image and frame all together. It only happens to some of the frame pages. (and this does not happen if I take time to download the finished frame one by one at the beginning) I am not sure if I am doing something wrong :(

@@ayakaganig It's tough to fully understand the exact situation you describe. If a frame imports correctly then on desktop you can always right click and choose "detach image" to separate the photo from the frame. If you just select the photo in the frame and hit delete then recently I've noticed it usually deletes the photo and keeps the frame, but occasionally it seems maybe both get deleted. I'm not sure if this is the exact situation you describe so feel free to provide more detail if you still need help. : ) cheers, Greg

@@learncanvawithgreg It works the way you just described when I download the finished frame one page at a time as pdf from canva and re upload, however, when I download them all together as multi-pages of PDF from Canva and re-upload as a PDF file with all the pages included, some of the frames start not working. (I am not sure if I am still explaining clearly here... sorry ESL speaker problem😓) I assume not many time you don;t have to do this extra process, but for something that I am planning to do requires after finishing the photopea process, importing them to canva and clearing the image inside (so they just show the cloud and hill graphic from canva) and download, then make sure other people can import them to their canva and use, if this makes any better sense.

@@ayakaganig Your English is great, I think it's more of a case of my brain not functioning properly! 🤣Usually once I import into Canva after creating in Photopea or elsewhere then I don't export and then reimport again so I don't have experience with this step. I guess I'm confused as to why you need this step. If you have frames you'd like to share with others then it would be best to share as a template link. Under the Share menu in the upper right look for the "Template Link" option. That's a better way than having other people have to import a PDF because it just allows them to spawn a copy from your file. The only thing you want to do in this case is make sure you don't go back and make edits after you have the file to the final point where you want to share it. In instances like this you might want to create a folder called "Final Shared Template Links" or something and store the file in there so you know not to make edits. But you can still have your own copy you make edits on...or use the template link to make a copy. : ) Hope this makes sense. If you still have more questions just let me know. : ) cheers, Greg

The shape you drew to show the raster mask looked like a wooden shoe, like they wear in holland. 😂 Thanks, I just found your channel. New sub. 😊 I can’t wait to learn more. I’m pretty familiar with Canva, but I am sure you will teach me something. I love the stacking technique, you showed at the end, to make the word and butterflies stand out, and the one where you added a second frame for sort of a drop shadow. My favorite tip though, was how to save it to a folder. I have so many pages on Canva open, because I forget to save stuff to folders. 🤦‍♀️

Sure, the main thing to understand about saving frames is that you can't save the frame itself to a Canva folder like you can do with a # of Canva elements. But, what you can do is save the file/project containing the frame off to a particular folder and then this ends up working very similar to saving off individual elements because from within the Canva project interface via the "Projects" tab you can access files/designs the same way you access individual elements...just navigate to the folder where your design is stored. And when accessing designs this way, you can then even click on the design, once you've navigated to the folder where it's stored in the left Projects menu, and see the individual pages. So, one option is having a bunch of frames on different pages of a design and then saving that off to a particular folder, "favorite frames" for example. This might make since if the frames were related, for example maybe you've have a design called "Square Instagram Frames" and in this design you'd only store square frames that you might want to use for Instagram posts. But, of course, you could just as easily have each unique frame in it's own design and then just saved off to an appropriate folder. It just really comes down to what organizational strategy makes the most sense to you. But then when you have a design open in the project interface and navigate to a folder via the "Projects" tab in the left menu, you then just find the design/page containing the frame you want to use and then just click on it. When you do then that design page will overwrite the current page in your open design so often you'll want to add a new page or be working on a blank page when you add the frame. Then you can just copy it, paste it, resize it, etc. as needed within your current design. Hopefully this all makes sense, just let me know if you have further questions. cheers, Greg

I am wondering if I make a frame that the fill is really going to need an outline, is the easiest/best way to do that similar to how you did the drop shadow at the end of this? So just duplicate frame, fill with desired outline color and adjust size which gives it more depth anyway? Or is there a way in photopea to automatically add an outline to the shape. So many thank yous for this video. Subscribed and looking forward to learning more from you. I really need this Plan E or F or whatever the heck I'm on now to work. :)

There are always multiple methods that can work depending on your needs so the duplicate frame method is an option, however someone recently asked a similar question to your and I addressed it in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lnWD0bCagK2od7g.html. There's an easy way to add a stroke in PS or Photopea, but as I mention in the video, you also might want to think about expanding your selection and creating a slightly larger frame that will then act as an outline once you put it behind the smaller frame in Canva. I go over it all in the video and the right method really depends on your needs and much flexibility you need from the asset going forward. Great question, thanks for asking. For shadows, you have some different methods you can use, but I'll give you a simple one I often use. So, for this example, let's pretend you are have completed the Photopea steps in this tutorial to complete your Vector mask and now you just have the final step for exporting. At this point, here's what you could do to create a shadow to compliment your mask/shape. 1) While on your layer with the vector mask is highlighted used the Ctrl+J keyboard shortcut to duplicate this layer. Then Ctrl+J to make a 2nd copy. 2) Now use Ctrl+E and it will merge those 2 copies together into 1 flat layer with no mask (You can also right click on the 2nd copy and choose "Merge down for this step". 3) You should now still have your vector mask layer, but also another layer with the same pixels showing (but no mask). Now click-drag the new non-mask layer below the vector mask layer in the Layers menu (right side of screen) and then use the "V" keyboard shortcut to switch to the move tool and click-drag and move this layer so it's slightly offset from the above layer in the direction you want your shadow (you can adjust this later). 4) Now, from the top menu, choose Filter-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur and blur to your liking. You can still later adjust the opacity of this blur using the opacity dropdown on the Layers menu. That's it, now you can export as PDF and the frame and the drop shadow/blur will come over as separate layers. Hope this helps, if you have questions just let me know! cheers, Greg

Above is for a drop shadow, if you wanted highlight or shadows that were above your frame, you could do that as well following a similar process, you would just have to adjust your selected area to what you want. But in general this is a smart workflow process...always considering what complimentary elements you might want to go with your frame. cheers, Greg

Thank so much!!! I had been trying to figure this out (with Photoshop) for quite some time - your tutorial was much easier! Question - I'm trying to create a frame that would go over another photo. Basically, we make nice ID badges for our teen volunteers. I have the background of the badge done and want to add the teen's photo into a custom frame (currently using a boring frame from the library). I was able to create the frame of our custom shape (that is used throughout campus), but it wants to 'replace' the page, not go on top of the background I already have. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Yes, you can use any image you want, but a vector mask and canva frames will not support transparency. In Canva you can lower the overall transparency level of any image or frame, but you can't have varying levels of transparency. Thank you so much for this video! My old process took a lot longer and I appreciate your easy to follow steps. One Q I have is do you have a video on how to create a Canva frame collage or split a frame? (frame can have multiple photos/textures within the same frame.) Hi Linda, Thanks for your question. A single frame can only hold a single photo so you can't actually have more than 1 photo in frame, but I do think there are workflow approaches to do the sort of thing that I believe you are talking about. Let me walk you through a few scenarios. 1) What is you wanted a photo in a frame, but then wanted a texture applied to that photo? You would duplicate the frame. Place a photo in the first version of the frame and then place the texture in the copy of the frame. You might have to have the 2 frame copies in differnt areas of the screen so you can easily access both copies (or temporarily move each copy to the top of the layer stack while adding the photo or texture), but then you just want to make sure that both frame copies are perfectly aligned with the photo in frame below the texture in the layer stack. 2) In a similar manner to above, you can stack multiple versions of a frame on top of one another with each version containing different photos...you just of course would have to lower the transparency of some of the photos if you wanted to see some sort of blended photo effect. 3) You can also, of course have a bunch of separate overlapping frames....or ones that are positioned directly up against one another so they might appear as one frame. In Canva you could just drag out and position the frames as you want, but if creating custom frames yourself in Photoshop/Photopea then you'd want to follow the process in this KZread video, only make sure that you are making a discrete selection for each area that will be its own frame and converting that into a vector mask. So if you are working on an image/design where you want 3 frames then you should have 3 corresponding vector masks created before you export as a PDF. Then, when you export as PDF each of these mask will register in Canva as a separate frame 4) Conversely to #3, anything selection that you turn into a single vector mask will export as a single frame. So even though you might have 4 distinct squares that are not touching, if you convert those into a single vector mask and export as a PDF then it will come into Canva as 1 frame. Hopefully this all makes sense. If you have more questions just let me know, or if you are still struggling with a particular example then take post a screenshot and description of what you are trying to do and I will try to help! cheers, Greg

When you make shapes, what dimensions do you set the original canvas to? Does it matter small or big??

Thanks for your question Ayaka. It doesn't matter so much as your final mask should end up being a vector so it should scale smoothly, however I tend to work at a size that's comparable to what I anticipate my final output will be just so you get a feel for things at the scale you anticipate using them at. If you work at a really large scale, but then end up using your mask at a really small scale then you might end up spending extra time on small details that aren't really going to matter. Conversely, if you work really small, but then end up using your mask on a larger scale then maybe you didn't spend enough time observing details that you will see and that will matter. Does it have to be elements thats from the canva library? I want to create a frame of a tumbler i sell but the shape of my tumbler is not available in canva gallery so i want to create a custom 1. Is that do'able in canva? I can do it in photopea and photoshop but the 1 i tried for canva does not make it editable

No, it doesn’t have to come from Canva. Any selection that you turn into a vector mask in Photoshop/Photopea and then export as part of a PDF should then be a usable frame when you import that PDF into Canva.

Thanks for the question. If you have Photoshop, then, absolutely, use Photoshop! The process should be virtually identical I believe. If you try it and have any issues, just reach out here and I’ll be happy to help. The reason why I chose to show the process in Photopea here is because I know a large # of Canva users don’t have Photoshop subscriptions and are trying to keep their costs down. So I sought out a free method that would work and Photopea fit the bill. It doesn’t have ALL of Photoshop’s advanced features, but does attempt to mimic the PS UI and has a lot of features that can help fill the gap for things Canva isn’t great at - advanced selections, masking, etc.. It’s also an easy tool for me to teach since it mimics the PS interface and I have been a PS user for forever. But this is a good reminder for me to remember to mention in these videos how PS and Photopea are related. Photopea is sort of like a light-weight PS clone. If you have Photoshop then you’ll likely never need to use Photopea, but for those without a PS subscription it becomes a nice tool to pair with Canva. : ). cheers, Greg

Hi Greg, 1 more question, is it possible to make a frame wherein the letters keep their openings on script fonts, such as to fill the letter O, but leave the center of the font empty? Can I use effects such as splice to achieve this look, I tried, but do not know how to create the path properly in photopea...any help would be great

Yes, nothing overly complicated here, as in the example, you just need to turn your text/font into a selection, then convert that to a path and then to a vector mask. If you want to make adjustments (hide part of your text, or add something that is not part of the text) then you would just modify your selection before converting to a path. Make sense? To be clear, the image itself will not change colors, but the selection path itself - the dotted line that appears at the edge of the selected area - will turn blue. Both of these can be a subtle change, but selections should be marked by a dotted line and then, when something becomes a work path, it should turn blue. So step 1 is making sure you have a selection. If you are making a selection of an image then make sure that layer is the one you have chosen in the layers menu and then you should be able to Ctrl+ click (on windows,Cmd+ click on Mac) on that layer to select it and you should see a dotted line appear at the edge of whatever is on that layer. Now, when you click selection to path you should see that dotted line turn blue and a “work path” should appear under the Paths menu. If you are still having trouble just try to describe your steps and what is happening (or not happening) or give me an idea of the type of image you’re trying to turn into a path/frame and I’ll try to help or I can work through another example for you. From your description, it sounds like you are having trouble loading the highlighted layer as a selection. I find it's definitely more tricky if you are working on a mobile device with a smaller screen, but it can still be done. Instead, of using Ctrl + click, instead make sure you have the layer you want to load as a selection highlighted in the layers menu to the right, then from the "Select" menu in the top menu you can choose "Load Selection" and by default it should have what you need in the Channel dropdown...it will save something like "Layer X Transparency". Just click okay and you should load all the pixels in the current layers as a selection. Then you can proceed to the channel --> Selection to Path steps and the other steps. Thanks for the question. First, make sure you have the layer that you want to create a selection from is the selected layer in the layers panel. Next, from the "Select" menu at the top of the screen, choose the "Load Selection" option. By default, when you do this in the channel dropdown you should see something like "Layer 1 Transparency". This might be slightly different b/c it will just be the name of the selected layer + the word Transparency so it might say "Layer 2 transparency or whatever. But whatever it is, you shouldn't have to change anything, just click OK and it will load all the pixels in that layer as a selection. Then you can proceed with the next steps (converting the selection to a path and then a path to a vector mask) as shown in this video. Is there any reason why you don’t download first in svg file but vectorize in photopea?

When you bring an svg file into photopea it often actually complicates the process because svg files are more complicated by nature and can sometimes have multiple “clip-paths” when opened in photopea. They alsoimport in such a way that Canva won’t convert them into frames if you export as a PDF immediately. so you end up with a few extra steps and then still have to go through the steps in this video as well. So, it just becomes about how Canva processes PDFs and, consequently, the easiest way to get to a frame doesn’t usually involve an svg in my experience. Hope this makes sense. Cheers, Greg

It's possible for certain windows to get closed/hidden. In the menu at the top of the screen, Select the "Window" menu option and you'll see a list of all the Windows/Tool Menus.....make sure "Paths" has a check mark next to it so that it is not hidden. When checked on the default position should be to the right of the "Layers" and "Channels" options on the right side of the screen, but this can sometimes change/shift and menus can also collapse so instead of seeing the name you only see an icon. If collapsed to icon mode you can hover over the icons on the right and after a second or two their name will pop up. You can open a menu by clicking on an icon or you can expand from icons to names and vice versa using the small arrows found above the icons/menus. Hopefully this helps you locate the Paths menu! cheers, Greg

Hello, I tried downloading a bunny image as a svg and a png and receive an failed message each time due to "there's only one image or graphic on your design. Premium images can't be exported on their own. Add more elements and then try again" I tried adding a circle within the image and it let me download the image. I uploaded in photopea as instructed and back into Canva and somewhere along the way it isn't working. Do you have any suggestions?

I'm not sure from your description Julie, but I'll help if I can. Describe your workflow. As shown in the video, if you have an image of a bunny that you want to turn into a frame then you'd bring that into Photopea and once in there you would: 1) Turn the bunny image into a selection. If the background is already removed then the easiest way to do it is going to be Ctrl+clicking on the layer. 2) With the selection active (you should see a dotted line around the bunny), to the right of the Layers and Channels tabs on the right side of the screen, choose the "Paths" tab. At the very bottom of this tab, at the bottom of the screen, choose the 4th icon which should say "Selection to Path" when you hover over it. When you choose this, the dotted line should turn into a solid blue line. 3) From the "Layer" menu at the top of the screen, choose Vector Mask --> Current Path. 4) Finally, choose File-->Export as-->PDF. Make sure sure none of the checkboxes are checked. 5) Import into Canva and when you open you should have a working frame. If you are still struggling feel free to post a screenshot of what you are trying to turn into a frame and I can record a workflow example for you. Best of luck! cheers, Greg

What about creating an offset on the frame? I think it will look cleaner with an offset! Is that something the person who would potentially buy or use the frame could just easily do or not do? I mean I know they can 😂 your tutorial was AMAZING! I saw another one and most was the same but not the exporting or creating the path! They were saying to save as a psd

Saving as a PSD is useful if you want to be able to open again in Photoshop or Photopea and work with your different layers, but, yes, selection->path->vector mask and then exporting as a PDF is the way to go when you’re trying to end up with a Canva frame. : ) Cheers, Greg

@@SimplybeingR Could you point me to an example image with the type of effect you are talking about? That will help me provide a better answer. In Canva you can only add inset borders to frames. In this video, kzread.info/dash/bejne/lnWD0bCagK2od7g.html, I show how you could use Photopea to add strokes or larger frames that would then act as a border in Canva. A similar process could be used to have an offset border. You can pretty much turn any shape into a frame which could then act as a border so just point me to an example image if you want me to work through a specific example. Cheers, Greg

Absolutely. I mention the Photopea method in this tutorial because it has a free version that everyone can access, but the process for doing this in Photoshop is virtual identical and Photopea mimics the Photoshop user interface. And, in my experience, Photoshop actually does an even better job than Photopea when it comes to converting things to vectors and preserving small details which can sometimes get lost in the conversion from a raster image. I would think the same would also be true of Adobe Illustrator since it really specializes in vector-based art. I use Illustrator less frequently than Photoshop so I'm a little less familiar with all the Illustrator steps but I know it can also be used for this process...my advice would be to use whatever program you're most comfortable with. @@KithandKinn-um3ji, I would guess yes, but I don't specifically use Affinity Photo so I'm not sure. But the steps you would want to try would be creating a mask (that is a vector mask) and then exporting as a PDF that preserves that vector mask (doesn't flatten everything or convert everything to raster). As I said, I haven't worked in Affinity Photo before, but I asked chatGPT about the process and it sound very similar to Photoshop/Photopea. in terms of the needed workflow. I specifically asked it about exporting a PDF while maintaining vector shapes and if offered the following: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Exporting PDFs with Vector Masks in Affinity: Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo both offer robust export options, including the ability to export documents as PDFs while preserving vector data. When exporting a document or design that includes vector masks or shapes, you have the option to preserve these elements as vectors in the PDF, rather than rasterizing them. This ensures that your vectors remain scalable and editable in vector-based software that can open PDFs. To export a PDF while preserving vector elements in Affinity Photo or Designer: Go to File > Export. Choose PDF from the list of formats. In the PDF export settings dialog, make sure to select a preset that does not rasterize the document (e.g., PDF (for export) or PDF/X). There may be additional options to fine-tune how vectors are handled, depending on the complexity of your document and the specific needs of your project. By carefully selecting your export settings, you can maintain the integrity of your vector masks and shapes when exporting your work as a PDF from Affinity products, making it a reliable tool for professional design and print work where vector quality is paramount. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope this helps! Hi McKenna, thanks for the question. Yes, you can set up as many frames as you like. The basic rule to understand is that 1 vector mask will hold 1 image. Let's work a basic example to drive home what this means and how it works: Example 1: Let's imagine we use our selection tools to create a basic shape on the left side of our design. Then, still using our selection tools and with the "Unite" option selected in the top left of the contextual menu, so that we are adding to the current selection, we draw out a 2nd basic shape on the right side of the screen. So now we have one selection, but essentially it's made up of 2 shapes. If we continue with the steps and turn the selection into a path and then a vector mask we've created 1 vector mask that includes both shapes. If we export this now as a PDF and bring it into Canva then when we drop in an image it will span across both shapes because those shapes were contained within 1 vector mask and thus have been converted into 1 frame. Example 2: This time we make a selection for the first shape, but then covert it to a path and then a vector mask before proceeding to shape 2. Now, we create the 2nd shape and, again, convert it to a path and then a vector mask. So now when we are exporting to a PDF we are exporting 2 vector masks...each shape was given its own mask. When we bring this into Canva each shape will become its own frame and hold its own picture. Make sense? Hope this helps, but if you have further questions just let me know! cheers, Greg

If your goal is taking something into Photopea or Photoshop and then exporting something you can bring back into Canva as a frame then you often don't even need to work with an SVG file. If your starting point is Canva where you are creating the shape that will become the frame then it's probably best to export as a PNG with transparency. It can still be done with an SVG format, but it often unnecessarily complicates things and your SVG will import into Photopea with a "Clip-Path" and you might not even initially see anything depending on whether the object exported from Canva was actually a vector file or it was just a raster image. For something exported from Canva that contained actual vector paths then they will import into Photopea with a little path symbol on the bottom right corner of their thumbnail under the Layers panel and if you click on that layer you should get a blue line to indicate there's path, but to create the appropriate file structure that I think Canva needs for import, I believe you may still need to Convert this into a work path....which means making a selection by ctrl/cmd clicking on a layer until you see the marching ants/dotted line. Then, follow the rest of the steps, convert the selection to a path, turn it into a vector mask and export as a PDF (as shown in this tutorial). However, different svg files are set up in different ways so you'll sometimes have multiple vectors, etc. which makes it a little bit more complicated when the goal is 1 shape that will become 1 frame. One big keyboard shortcut trick if you're seeing everythin onscreen that you want to become your frame but things are on different layers, with clip-paths, etc. (and the background has been removed so your shape is isolated)then you can create a layer above all other layers and then use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd + alt/opt + shift + E. I know, it's a lot of keys to hold down at once, but this works to flatten all visible pixels onto the current layer which you could then select and follow the process in this video. Sorry for the long-winded answer which I know may have been confusing, there are just a lot of scenarios that could be involved in you are bringing an SVG. The bottom line is you want to get to the point where you have a dotted line selection representing the area you want to become the frame and then you can proceed following the steps in this tutorial. Do you mean that when you go to Layer-->Vector mask from the top menu all the options are dim/grayed out and thus "not clickable"? If that's the case, this usually happens when your actively selected layer (the layer highlighted in the layers menu to the right of your workspace) is a shape layer. A clue that it is a shape layer is usually an square icon with points at the 4 corners. This layer should also produce a blue path around the shape when selected (although this can be tough to see). Also, when a shape layer is selected, if you click over to the paths menu you'll usually see something like "Layer X Shape Path". When you have a shape path then you need to convert it to a work path before the final Layers-->Current path option will work. But it could be I'm misinterpreting your question or maybe it's something else so provide more details if needed and I'll help if I can. cheers, Greg

How do you create a frame but keep part of the image...for example...in the photo you have of the woman with the hair...what if you wanted to keep her face and shoulders but only wanted her hair to be the frame?

Hi Tracy Thanks for the question. You have a # of options in the way you could do it, but the biggest thing to remember is that whatever area you select and then turn into a vector mask is what will become your frame. So, in your example, you would just make a selection of the hair, turn that into your frame. But, there are a few things to consider. Hair is usually a rather complex selection to make. It can be done with advanced tools in programs like Photoshop/Photopea, but remember, when you convert a selection to a vector mask you can sacrifice some detail AND your mask/frame will not be able to have a feathered edge (varying levels of transparency). So, you could come at this a few ways. Maybe you do create a mask/frame of the hair and have that overlay her face shoulders, but you could also create a mask/frame of the entire woman, but then also select just her face shoulders (feathering some parts if you want) and bring that layer back as a PNG w/ transparency. If this example that layer would end up being above your frame/layer so it would obscure everything in the frame except the hair. Just pointing out that there are almost always multiple ways to approach the problem and it sort of depends on the image and your needs. I have noticed some rare instances when Canva will only import a shape and not a frame IF the vector mask itself was a basic shape, but in those instances usually Canva will have the basic frame you need anyway. Otherwise, it's a matter of detective work when a frame import fails so you have to review the steps (creating the selection, converting to path, converting to a vector mask, and exporting). Usually if you make it to the vector mask and then export with all the extra checkboxes left unchecked then it should work. If you're starting with a asset from Canva and can share your Canva project with that asset as a (template link) then I'll take a look and can record a video for you if I have time. Sorry, it hasn't initially worked for you, hopefully we can get it working. cheers, Greg

The dad did not take and the frame didn’t either using the steps to the t but here is the link to the square I was trying to create so I can send the frame to someone else so they could make it easier to use if I did the work . But can’t seem to get them to work for me

Hi Kryslyn, thank for reaching out, sorry you are having trouble, I will help get things sorted out for you if I can! I can’t not totally sure what you mean from “my image will not click” and “When I choose the layer path it’s just a blank background”, but let me see if I can help with some general advice and then please reach out again if you still need help. If you’re starting in Canva, you can always share your file (what you’re trying to turn into a frame) as a “template link” so I can see better see what you’re trying to do. In Photopea, you will always start by creating a selection of the area you want to become your mask. This should show onscreen as a dotted/dashed line (sometimes called marching ants). It can be a little hard to see, but it should be there. Next, for the convert to path step, when you first click on the “Paths” tab (usually, just to the right of the “Layers” and “Channel” tab) you won’t see anything in the Paths window b/c you haven’t created a path yet. But if you do have an active selection (that first step we talked about) then, at the very bottom of the Paths panel, you want to choose the 4th icon over. If you hover over this for a few seconds it should say “Selection to Path”. When you click on this you should see a “Work Path” show up in the paths panel and you’re now ready to go to the next step where you convert your Layer to a Vector Path which you do by going up to the “Layer” menu at the top of the screen and choosing Layer -->Vector Mask-->Current Path. Hi Nicole, sorry it's not working you. I'm happy to try to gets things working for you. There are some instances when, if it's a basic vector and you're clipping a solid color, Canva will process it as a shape and not a frame. But this is one of a few things that can go wrong. If you can provide a little bit more detail or provide an image of what you are trying to turn into a frame (if you have the shape in Canva you can share as a template link or a public view link) and I'll try to help you get it sorted out. cheers, Greg

Yes, Photopea has a free version that has TONS of useful functionality that opens up a world of tools/creativity that really can help fill in some gaps for things Canva isn't great at. With the free version of Photopea, you do have to put up with an ads bar on the far right, but it's not a big deal. There is a paid version where you can get rid of ads and unlock a few other perks, but I think the free version has close to all of the functionality that the paid version has. Yes, except I believe the final export to PDF step is maybe slightly different. I believe it’s File->Save as and then you find PDF in the dropdown list. I’ll double-check this when I get a chance. Cheers, Greg
