Learn the perfect hormonal time to sleep, eat, and have sex | Michael Breus | TEDxManhattanBeach

We all have a chronotype - a rhythmic pattern in our body that determines the best time to sleep, eat, exercise, have sex, and so much more, says sleep expert, Dr. Michael Breus. In his informative and humorous talk, Michael describes the 4 primary chronotypes, and the positive impact that living according to our chronotype can have on our daily lives.

I actually do sleep the best from 2am-9am no lie. I feel the most refreshed sleeping those hours. Unfortuntely my job starts at 8am and if you cant make it, you are replacable. Ive had trouble with sleep since about age 6, 30yrs now. And i had a set bed time and waking time. School always started at 8am and my jobs have always started at 8am. The 3yrs i was on unemployment, my job shut down and its not easy finding a job here. I found i slept the best from 2am-9am and felt great. i finally got a RARE job with benifits and all the works, so unfortunately i cant sleep those hours 🤷🏼‍♀️ And no i didnt have a lot of caffine as a kid. My mom made sure i ate healthy and i was very active. And throughout my school years, i ran, lifted weights, climb, martial arts and horse backriding, and had a set bed time and waking time and i still wouldnt sleep for days at a time.

Unfortunately many people doesn't even believe this or ready to believe. Personally even I was depressed to not able to sleep and get up early and there was even myths regarding that successful people always get up before 5 am and bla bla. But now I have got evidence to support myself and sticking to my chronotype has yielded me good results

Personally for me, it makes a lot of sense. I'm a classic wolf. I'm all energetic when I wake up at 9am or later. While my body couldn't adjust to waking up early in morning despite doing that for years. I would literally drag till 10-11am. My energy is also at its highest post 7pm, can literally feel it.

The only sensible thing about this talk is that different chronotypes exist, and the world and workplace should accommodate to them. Our wellbeing would greatly benefit from that and I really believe the story about the woman. There's good and solid evidence for different chronotypes and regenerative sleep is incredibly important for every physiological function, as well as mental health. Sleeping even one hour less can significantly reduce performance (Mathew Walker, sleep scientist and author of Why We Sleep). Now, with these "animals", there's a classic barnum effect: statements that are vague and general enough that most people will find some truth to them and pick out the parts they identify with the most. I highly doubt their scientific validity.

Growing up I was 100% a night owl - I'd always be going to bed late, like between 11 and 1 am, and struggling to get up for school. When I went to uni I got really bad anxiety/was depressed and I wouldn't go to bed till 5am and then wake up at 12pm. Now that I've left uni and received therapy I'm doing so much better. I have a job now too which meant I had to reset my body clock to that of a bear. Tbh a bear schedule feels really good for me. I still tend to sleep late, like around 12, but I'm doing so much better mentally and I don't struggle as much getting up in the morning as I used to. I think the most important thing with sleep is maintaining consistency with whatever schedule you decide. Good luck to everyone out there who may be struggling with sleeping! This is only temporary. You can get better :)

I believe there is much truth to much of this information, but it gets lost when giving personality descriptions that are overall less generalizable (or are too vague that they aren’t remarkable & not worth including). Too much of this is appealing only to those parts of us who enjoy learning about ourselves & do so through confirmation bias. I would’ve loved to have had quantitative data like Likert scales of reported happiness, energy, fulfillment, moods, etc. It goes without saying that people are complex & everyone will be different, but I feel with these narrow descriptions and “explanations” of types of people, very few people will perfectly fit in the box.

Maybe it could be that every theory is conjured up in parts, combining imagination, experience then evidence? I'm no expert, but I am 40! Also I do wonder, how many of the folks here have missed his point, they may instead start to choose their preferred animal!!!!? For example, why associate with being a bear when you can be a Dolphin (type thing..)! Possibly too much emphasis on the animals! Although it did work well in grabbing my attention. But if I were not able to realise this point, I may be left completely confused some weeks & some strange behaviour later!! Scientists, tech-heads & teachers pay attention: please don't forget your audience, start simple, stay clear & finish simple! Intellectuals types are more than capable of researching more later on, within the confines of their own brains! But I enjoyed the video and don't wish to complain or criticise.

Can totally relate man. I always heard/felt the same way, you can get your circadian rhythm to what ever routine you want it just takes time and discipline. The part about 12 hour and 8 hour eating cycles (intermittent fasting) seems factual, pretty sure there are many studies available on that. Most people straight up overload their stomach all day and night and it's being overworked non stop making it extremely inefficient. People starting to eat at like 7 am and then still eating by the time 11 pm rolls around wondering why they gaining weight or can't fall asleep.

I really love Michael's work, I always knew I'm a wolf since childhood. It's the first time I see this video and I didn't know that he also says extra personality stuff about each chronotype, I think this part is absolutely nonsense sorry Michael, but that's just not true at all. For example, I'm a wolf but not an introvert.

I'm always sleepy when the sun rise (when everybody is waking up I'd like to sleep), I like to wake up around 11:30am and have my breakfast (while people are having lunch) and I make my best at work around 8pm till 5am. I m artist and people say that is normal for some of us being like that but how to live according with our own chronotype when you are awake and working while everything is closed and everyone is sleeping? 😂

Yeah it seems to me that it's a marketing strategy to get more clients, who would do anything to find an easy answer for their problems. It doesnt make sense from an evolutionary perspective for people to have different chrono types, because these unhealthy sleeping patterns are a thing of the last century, no time for chrono types to evolve.

@Shahzad Ali that melatonin is secreted differently between different people, i guess, i mean what you base your statement that there are different chrono types, you have to have a solid data that shows you that.

@@mateinastafil It actually does make sense to have people waking up at different times. This meant that there was always someone awake to watch over the rest of the sleeping tribe and wake anyone in the case of predators. As for the weird animal names and personality traits, seems like marketing

There is actually robust medical literature supporting different chronotypes and the medical physiology of sleep is relatively well understood. Medically, what he is describing is formally known delayed and advanced sleep phase. You can read about them and easily search up the robust level 1 evidence behind this. I think his talk is geared towards the general public rather than an advanced medical crowd. So, he is making things easy to understand. The purpose of the talk is not to critically appraise the vast amount of medical literature. That would make for a very boring talk unless presenting at a research conference.

Walker talks about Chronotype and shifts in circadian rhythm in teenage years also so I am not disputing that too much, but this guys lack of evidence presented on caffeine and weight loss is off putting. All he is showing is his timetables. He doesn't mention that there is still 1 quarter Caffeine still in your system after 12 hours, why is he even recommending to drink it?
