Hmm.... why are your first step and second set, the same distance? I've always been taught its "half, full, traveling to half past, full, traveling to half past, full step" rinse repeat etc. Instead you seem to be doing full step, full step, full step, full-step, full-step, full-step, full-step. In theory, step 1 I think ought to be the middle of your foot is "on the line" and step 2 is like on the next-line (or a full foot length forward from the previous step). Additionally, pressing hard into the floor, then rolling your feet from the outside to the inside then back and down onto the floor.

They aren't, you're right that the steps on count 1 and 5 are a bit smaller. The 'mantra' often used is 'short, long, in place - short, long, in place. But as you study other dancers, the difference is mostly miniscule. It is mainly said that way to ensure you make those steps on 1 and 5 small, as people are often inclined to make those two steps too big. Your second comment I don't understand. You should never roll your foot from the outside in. You should always land the foot on the inside of the foot (below the big toe) or flat (weight spread evenly on the ball of the foot). Unless you mean rolling of the foot from the ball to the heel. That is indeed correct. But when you are going for a technique that is more rooted in afro, you will place your foot flatter on the floor to begin with (the ball-heel action will be much less pronounced).

Good tutorial for beginners! I think the spacing of the boxes confused me for a min because it gives the impression that you’re traveling a lot in your movements than you would if you were actually dancing, but like you said when watching other dancers that extra step in between is minuscule.
@wietskewelten
2 ай бұрын
@AlwaysKoolonYou the steps on 1 and 5 can be miniscule, but it's also not wrong to make them about a foot long or so. It all depends on preference, adjusting to your partner (when not dancing solo), the music, space on the dance floor and just your mood 😁

That's a great idea, thanks! I'll see if I can make that happen 🙌 For a lead dancing partnerwork on2 vs on1 your steps, if you'd step in place, stay the same, ie 'left right left, right left right'. So for some leaders it helps to not think about the actual steps too much but to think 'go back' when you're coming out of a combo. (Instead of forward on 1).
