I must say the initial steps trying to record stuff are painful. It just seems illogical that a record button wouldn't record the currently highlighted part! So easy to miss the "arm" and "session record" buttons. Ugh, so annoying - I don't think I've had this much initial frustration with any other DAW. Glad I found this video - I was able to figure out the rest! Not sure I'm sticking with it though - the UX just doesn't feel great.

It's annoying. So many great tutorials are specific to Ableton, because a lot of really great professionals favour it. Obviously it's a very powerful tool. But the UX is not great in my opinion either, extremely non-intuitive and all the worse for anyone familiar with literally any other DAW. Very basic things that you take for granted on other DAWs are just missing or buried in Ableton, so you end up scanning the internet and the manual to figure out something you can figure out even in something like Audacity on instinct and common sense.

Overdub is nice. How do you do multiple takes when recording midi. (overwrite vs overdub) Most of the time you want to do a new take since you flubbed it rather than add more information onto the existing track. For example keep recording your 16 bar loop until you have a take you like, rather than having to erase the prior take each time.

  • @gabrieldulon4752

you can do overwriting in the arrangement view. You have to enable a loop, then start playing the loop, arm your track and start playing. When the playing bar will arrive at the end of the loop, it will continue to write over the previous take. Unfortunately doing text explanations like this is really hard to understand without showing exactly what i'm talking about, but I hope it was helpful.

YO i have an extremely annoying problem. I must have changed a setting somewhere because when I record midi, after the count in i have set up, its like it waits 1 beat before recording starts. One click of the click track before it starts recording. I am at a loss trying to find out what setting i have changed. To be clear, the clock is in sync, it just doesnt start at the same time that ableton starts recording.

in Windows10, LIve 10 seems to have a broken feature. If I record a midi clip in Session that is longer than the looping backgroup music, Live will not record notes near the loop point and will make other notes much longer than they were entered. This does not happen on my Windows7 machine. Has nothing to do with clip quantize, record quantize is always OFF I never use it. Anyway seen this? Have solution?

JUST GIVE IS STANDARD TRIED AND TESTED FOR DECADES LINEAR LOOP RECORDING IN THE ARRANGEMENT VIEW and let people do this for session view. Why do I have to press different buttons for session and arrange view midi loop/overdub recording.. Not only that loop midi recording in arrange view is a bit weird. So, you record one bar and expect the part you recorded to play back instantly but sometimes it doesn't - it waits for a cycle and then begins. Why did it take seven years to add the + button in arrange view for midi loop recording? Anyway, its still not right. Its just a bit off really.

It would be far more helpful to start the video with a new session file - there are lots of settings in here that aren't show (tempo, for one, looping, for another, and so on.) A newbie won't understand that they can't just follow along, and the video is designed for newbies. Not helpful.

If I draw a long note from bars 1 - 4, with a melody on top, and then I loop bars 3 and 4, the held note does not play, even with midi chase on.
