But I wonder, why it is not, for example, "five MILLIONS and..." or "twenty-seven MILLIONS and...", because it is more than a million and plural. I accept it, but it is so strange, that I always intuitively want to say "millions". For me, it was new, that the tens were written with a hyphen. I did not notice that right away. For you, that goes without saying. I noticed it, when I wrote out the numbers. I wondered, if the tens were actually written together (twentyseven/twenty-seven). But that is actually a different topic. ✨

Hi Emma! I watched your short but useful video on difference between bed and the bed; I wanted to leave a comment but i couldn't. That is why I am doing it here. I hope you don't mind. As you know the is the most common word in English it is also the most difficult word for foreigners to master. There are a lot of videos on the subject on the net, but all of them except one, teach about rules; but what learners need is the reason not rules, something that you did in your video. In your video you showed that the changes the meaning of the word after it. All native speakers know this and that is why they never make mistake with it. So I hope you will kindly consider the following suggestion. Please Choose a text full of the or write one yourself. It could be about anything like mermaids or fairies. And then go through it and explain why there is a the before a word and what that word means with the, and what it would mean without the, as you did in the video about bed. That way we will learn the logic of using the the and hopefully will make fewer mistakes.Sorry about the length of my comment! Have a nice time and thank you.

Hi Bubble, thank you! 'The' is complicated! It is not always the case that whether or not we use 'the' changes the meaning. Most of the time, when we talk about places, it is correct to use 'the'. We go to the cinema, the theatre...(we use 'the' in these cases because we are referring to specific locations). We never say 'I'm going to cinema'. However, there are a number of places where it does make a difference. I plan to do videos on all of these! I'll consider the idea of explaining the use of 'the' using a text. I often do it that way in my classes, so it makes sense. 🙌🌻

I have a video all about reported speech. I can't remember whether it includes reporting 'have to'. Here's the link in case you're interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y5uYq5iJh9Tgo5s.html I will certainly make some short videos on the topic too. Regarding the phrase above, he said they had had to cross the river and go straight ahead. ('cross' and 'go' remain in the infinitive form because the semi-modal 'have to' is always followed by the infinitive). 🙌🌻
@hulkhogan8190
Жыл бұрын
Thank you ma'am. But still confused why there are double "had"
@EnglishWithEm
Жыл бұрын
@@hulkhogan8190 No problem. It's because the main verb is 'have to'. It is a semi-modal, which is used when there is an obligation to do something. The direct speech was 'We had to...' - the Past Simple of 'have to'. In reported speech, we backshift, which means to go one tense into the past. Past Simple becomes Past Perfect. The Past Perfect is formed with 'had + V3' (v3 = past participle). That's how you get 'Had had to...' The first 'had' is the auxiliary 'had' from the Past Perfect tense. The second 'had' is the past participle of the main verb 'have to'. An example with 'have' as the main verb: Direct: "I had breakfast." Reported: He said he had had breakfast. Another example with 'have to' as the main verb: Direct: "I had to leave early." Reported: She said she had had to leave early.

@ English with Em -- You do not speak for Americans. I don't about other English-speaking countries. The "ands" are non-standard. For instance, 150 will very commonly be said as "one hundred fifty" in the United States. The leaving out of the "ands" is the same for your other examples in the United States.
