This is the best video I've seen on this technique. I am not a quilter, but I inherited a hand sewn grandmother's flower garden quilt, and it is so old that many of the flowers need repair. I feel a bit intimidated doing it, but your video really helps. Thank you!

I've just started sewing another hexie quilt myself and I stumbled upon a good trick I haven't heard anyone mention. We all know you can remove the papers after a hexie is surrounded by other hexies. What I didn't realize before is that the surrounding hexies don't have to be sewed to each other yet for this to work! So now I take my six petals and sew them all to the center, but leave them flopping loose from each other, then I remove the center paper, and THEN I sew the petals together, and since the center is nice and floppy without the paper there, it folds and handles much more easily!

What a great tip, I've just started a hexi project and always leave that centre hexi paper in! Your method makes a lot of sense and it is much easier to fold the centre hexi without the paper Thanks for sharing.

fiskars Hexie X-L SQueeze Punch are great to recycle all your junk mail postcard type paper into hundreds of hexies. Five-Inch square Charm packs can be cut easily into 2 1/2 squares. 1 five inch will make 4 squares to cover 4 hexie shapes. You can trim the corners later. ALSO, if you punch a small circular hole or heart in the center of the punched paper it will help easily release the paper/recycled postcard when it's times to pull out the hexie paper template with a small cuticle type stick

I would good Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilts you get some ideas.

Please do a video on putting the flowers together. I have made numerous flowers with only one layer around the center. Now I want to attach them together to make a table runner.

Thank you for the video. I was taught to roll the knot on my fingers. I was also taught to sew towards myself. I am of course much older than you and I’m also English. Perhaps that explains the difference.

I'm 36 and my mom taught me to roll the thread between my fingers to make a knot too😁 Why do you think you were taught to sew towards yourself? I feel like its awkward, but if there is a benefit I'd try it!👍🏾😉

Thank you! I knew when I saw that you had made a video on EPP you would explain exactly how to do it and you would make it easy! I was right! The only thing I’m not sure is the glue as my quilts never get washed! Someone else may wash them but I don’t. So does the glue have any kind of lasting effect if it doesn’t get washed out? Just found your channel and I subscribed to it. I'm so glad that you mentioned that you use hand quilting thread. Some other turtorial say they use Dmc thread, but I find that thread breaks so easy. So I'm going back to using hand sewing thread to make my grandmother's flower garden quilt.

Lots of great information! It would have been nice to see a representation of the quilt you are making as well as information about what size it finally ends up to be with how many flowers and what color is generally used between the flowers. I know it is all to your own tastes but a little more general info would have been great. Thank you, for the information.

A tip for anyone trying this, instead of using the traditional paper template cards I'd recommend buying 50/50 fusible water-soluble paper templates or sheets. You place the shape on the wrong side of your fabric and set it with an iron (this really helps when your sewing down the edges) and can be adjusted if necessary. Then once your finished you simply wash your design (using only cold water) and the paper will completely dissolve leaving only a thin layer of fusible interfacing to help strengthen your fabric. You can buy packs of this paper for relatively inexpensive at any quilt/craft store, and most kinds can be used in a standard ink jet printer so you can pick any design and print a whole sheet of them. The only tedious part is cutting them out, but I definitely prefer it to pulling out and reusing bent up card templates. Highly recommend this method, it's a huge time saver!!✂️

That is really pretty brilliant! I wouldn't have thought about using wash-away stabilizer. I can see that being very helpful for some people who find regular templates a bit tricky to work with. Another thought that might help some people could be to buy a 1" hexagon punch in the scrapbooking section of the craft store. That might simplify cutting out the template shapes and eliminate the need to print or the worry of cutting inaccurately. Of course, that's only helpful if you happen to be making a 1" hexagon quilt, but I think that is a pretty common one, so it will at least help some.

Just had to comment. I’ve been making face masks for my dads nursing home and have a lot of spare pieces left over. I used to do this when I was 8 years old! I spent long periods in hospital due to my disability and my mum taught me how to do this. But that was 42 years ago and I just needed to refresh my memory. I did all the steps you showed except glueing the fabric! And yes my hands used to hurt but I’d had painful surgery on my feet so the hand aching distracted me from it! Thanks for refreshing my memory. I’m going to make a quilt now xxxxxx oh ps also we couldn’t buy pre cut paper back then! Do you ever use a template and if so do you have any recommendations?

Please tell me how you will cover the back part which has all open fabric edges,and handstitching will really last long?

You would layer it with batting and backing fabric like and other quilt and quilt it. And hand stitching has lasted 100 years on the original grandmother’s flower garden quilts, so a long time.

I inherited a half finished grandmothers flower garden top and would love to know how to finish it. I have enough flowers, just don’t know the best way to put them together. Suggestions appreciated!

Try Googling Grandmother’s flower garden settings. There are lots of patterns out there you can follow.

My issue was how to attach all the bigger flowers together. It stumped me so I put it all away for now. Sad because I love hands sewing these.MJ

Because of the inset seams it is very difficult to machine stitch hexies.

They make half templates so you can have even edges and bind it normally

Yes, you leave the paper inside until you have them all sewn together!

I found that I was spending too much time making knots. So, if you start your first stitch a bit short of that corner, then sew OVER the loose thread, taking 2-3 stitches at that corner, then working over that end - this saves me time. I do the same at the ends, taking 2-3 stitches at that corner, then working backward under the existing stitches, with NO knots.

Are there actually people who will buy packaged pre-cut hex pieces? That just seems wrong. But good for someone else.
