PAINTING VIDEO DESCRIPTION - Are you a beginner painter? Want to learn how to paint with acrylics? Looking for an easy painting idea? Let me be your acrylic art instructor as I teach you easy step-by-step instructions throughout this fun beginner art video as you learn how to paint a highland cow looking at a hummingbird, a whimsical painting “Hummingbird and Highland Cow”. I travelled to Scotland back in 2018, and, although I went to Edinburgh, strolled through Stirling Castle, looked for the Loch Ness Monster on Loch Ness Lake, drank whiskey, ate haggis, took pictures of guys in kilts, listened to bagpipers play on the streets of Glasgow, and drove through the highlands, I never actually saw a highland cow. Just blind luck, I guess. I wish I had because these cows are co cute with their gorgeous heads of curly hair that covers most of their face. Now, hummingbirds, on the other hand, I don’t need to travel to Scotland to try and see, I can just look out into my backyard at my hummingbird feeders. I’m fortunate enough to see one once or twice a week if I’m lucky. They are so tiny, so pretty and so quick, you must have a good eye to catch a glimpse for sure. So, I thought it would be a funny painting to show a Highland cow, with only one visible eye, spotting a Hummingbird fly by. If you like nature, animals, cuteness, humor, cows and birds, then join me and paint a super fun and easy painting. The first lesson you’ll learn in this beginner level painting tutorial is how to paint a background with atmospheric dimension using natural landscape colors to create an outdoor vibe, perfect for setting the tone in this animal portrait image. After learning how to draw a small bird and cute cow with big horns using a dot-to-dot drawing method, you’ll apply a simple base coat to work off of. Then you'll learn how to paint horns and facial features for your livestock, including, an eye, nose and mouth, using simple techniques. Then you’ll paint hair and fur by using a one brushstroke technique and layers of colors for added depth, texture and movement with an impressionistic style that has a 3-d photo realistic appearance. Then you’ll finish your bird with an eye, beak, feathers and wings by using a one brushstroke technique for blending and color gradients to give form, texture, and dimension for a lifelike effect so real you’ll feel as if the bird is going to fly right off the canvas. With these simple painting methods, you can paint any type of cow you want, whether it’s an Angus, Hereford, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Simmental. And you could paint any type of bird you want, whether it’s a Cardinal, Finch, American Bald Eagle, Mourning Dove, Woodpecker, Chickadee, Owl, or Sparrow. The point is to just have fun with it and make this endearing image meaningful to you! With an enchanting and alluring energy, this image is created in a narrative painting style. Using only 3 brushes and 6 colors, you’ll paint like a professional! Have a date night at home, paint party, paint and sip event, or virtual paint night. Paint with gouache, oil paint, or watercolor, any medium will work! Paint just for fun or for art therapy. It's an easy art project. Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 3/4 inch flat bristle, #5 round synthetic, #1 round synthetic
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, mars black, burnt umber (brown), chrome yellow, cobalt blue and burnt sienna (rust)
Other: Chalk, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat for canvas with black, yellow, white and brown
2. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Finish background with black, dark green (made in step 1) and white
3. Chalk - Draw outline for cow and bird
4. #5 round brush - Paint base coat for horns, nose and bird with white, rust, black and brown
5. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat for fur with black, brown and rust
6. #5 round brush - Finish horns with black, brown and white
7. #5 round brush - Finish cow facial features with black, rust, white, brown, skin tone (made in step 4) and gray (made in step 4)
8. #1 round brush - Finish bird with skin tone, black, white, yellow and blue
9. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Finish fur with skin tone, brown, rust, yellow, white and black
10. #1 round brush - Sign with black

I love this! If I wanted to do a rainbow version of this cutie what colours would you suggest rather than the more realistic tones?

Highland cows are here in PA. I pass them everyday in my travels to and from my work. I think they are the cutest, especially the babies. When i saw this, i was so wxcited. I'm painting Highland cows at the moment only in watercolour,I would maybe put a butterfly in place of the bird as we don't have humming birds here in the UK, this is a wonderful painting thank you,I love to watch other artists at work even though I've been painting for many years I feel your never to old to learn something new .☺

Hi Michelle! I just started following you and I'm so excited to start painting with you! Just want to get clarification on chrome yellow paint. I know they don't sell that color anymore. What is your recommendation for the closest color to chrome yellow? I have searched and I see cadmium yellow but there are different cad yellows. Just want to make sure I have the right one. TY!

How do you keep your acrylics from drying on you? Your palette always looks fresh, but mine seems to dry up before I can get a painting done.

I say horsepucky heeheehee And I think you have been look at the color of. Your arm.. looks like sun rays to me. Which we could be in the sun somewheres. Between freezing rain and snow storms I’ve had enough winter. Paint something so hot looking it will make me sweat…lol yes he will do. Lol…lol sorry couldn’t help myself….

Hi Michelle, you started this video stating a primed canvas. Does that mean you painted the canvas white first?

Hi June, A primed canvas means that the raw canvas has been treated to allow for paint to adhere to it. Most canvasses that you buy from the store these days, or online, are already primed when you buy them. If you are purchasing raw canvas, than you will want to put a layer of primer on the side that you want to paint. There is a product called Gesso, that is specifically designed to be a good adhesion primer for art canvasses. If the canvas you have is white on one side and tan on the other side, than it is already pre-primed, if it is tan on both sides than it is raw. I hope this info helps. Have fun painting!
