PAINTING VIDEO DESCRIPTION - Looking for an easy Christmas painting idea? Want to do a fun Holiday DIY project? Let me be your acrylic art instructor as I teach you easy step-by-step instructions throughout this fun beginner art video as you learn how to paint a horse head and wreath-a fun Christmas portraiture image “HOLIDAY HORSE” with acrylic paint. Horses are very intelligent animals, and they know that when the days get shorter, the jingly music starts playing on the radio, and everyone’s mood begins to change, that December is approaching, Christmas is just around the corner, and that it’s time to get festive and start celebrating the Holidays by decorating their house and getting all dressed up. And what better way for this distant cousin of Mr. Ed to join in on all the Holiday spirit than by dressing up with a Christmas wreath! So, let’s have a fun art class together and learn how to paint this lovely brown and tan equine as it stands proudly gazing at the viewer with a Christmas decorate wreath around its neck. The first step you’ll learn in this animal portrait lesson is to paint a dark gradated background to create the look and feel of a silent night, perfect for setting the mood for this Holiday painting. After learning how to draw a horse profile and wreath using an easy dot-to-dot method, you’ll apply a simple base coat to work off of. Then you’ll learn how to paint the body of a horse by adding highlights and shadows to create curves, contours and muscles in the horse’s physic. Then you’ll learn how to paint fur by layering colors to add texture and dimension creating a realistic 3D effect like a photograph. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to paint facial features, including, eyes, nose, ears and a mouth, using just a few simple painting tricks and brushstrokes. In the next step you'll paint a horse’s mane using a directional brushstroke to create movement and flow to the stallion’s hair. After painting the base coat to your wreath and ornaments in the next step, you’ll a shine and reflections on the sparkling bauble ornaments. You can personalize the type of horse to resemble your favorite, like a Quarter, Arabian, Thoroughbred, Appaloosa, Clydesdale, Morgan, or a Shetland Pony, or just customize the color to be chestnut, palomino, buckskin, black or gray. Maybe you want to paint a Santa hat on its head or mistletoe on his ears. The options are endless, you could put wings or a horn on the horse to create a Pegasus or unicorn. Add stars, snow, or twinkles in the background for an added Christmas effect. Inspired by the strength and gentle nature of these giant animals, horses can symbolize purity, heroism, spiritual enlightenment, and the triumph of good over evil, which is the essence of the Holiday spirit. Using only 3 brushes and 8 colors we'll create this storybook Christmas painting that's great for a date night, paint party, paint and sip event, or virtual paint night. Paint with gouache, oil paint, or watercolor, any medium will work! Paint just for fun, as a hobby, or for art therapy. STEPS:
1. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint background with black and white
2. Chalk - Draw outline for horse and wreath
3. 3/4 inch bristle brush - Paint base coat for horse with rust and black
4. #8 round brush - Paint fur on face and body with rust, brown, yellow, white and black
5. #2 round brush - Finish nose and mouth with black, rust, white, gray (made in step 1) and gold (made in step 4)
6. #2 round brush - Paint eye with black, rust, white, blue, yellow and gold
7. #8 round brush - Paint base coat for mane, bridle, and wreath with black and green
8. #8 round brush - Finish ears and mane with gold, rust, white and black
9. #2 round brush - Finish bridle and paint 1st layer to ornaments with blue, yellow, white, red and gray
10. #2 round brush - Finish wreath with red, black, white, yellow and green
11. #2 round brush - Sign with green

Michelle, I cannot tell you how beautiful this painting is. I got my first horse at the age of 41. He was a challenge and taught me a lot but they are the most beautiful animals. I don't have him anymore but am volunteering at a therapeutic horseback riding center to get my horse fix. Now the dilemna is whether I do the gnome (which I love) or the horse first!

Bonjour Michelle, très joli cheval, comme toujours peint avec beaucoup de délicatesse, ces oreilles, son toupet qui descend jusqu'au dessous de l'oeil, son harnais, et cette couronne de feuilles, autour de son encolure, il est craquant, j' admire toujours le fondu de tes couleurs, sa jolie crinière semble tressée, et ces reflets que tu donnes pour le mettre encore plus en valeur. Je sais lire ta langue mais pas la parler et grâce aux paramètres j'ai des sous titres, beaucoup plus facile pour moi. Ah mais je vois sur la miniature que tu as ajouté des roses ou des fraises et des ornements blancs, ou du gui tout simplement félicitations Michelle très bel animal à bientôt Nadine

Michelle the flat portion of a horses face between the brow and nostrils is the bridge. The part between the ears is called the forelock and the part behind the bottom lip is called the chin groove. The cheek portion is the jaw. Just above the eye is the forehead. The muzzle is just behind the nostrils. Most think the muzzle is considered the longer portion of their face but it's not it's just a small part right behind the nostrils. And the mane is not fur it is considered hair. I thought this might help you out some with the parts of the face of a horse.

I love to paint, and I paint almost every day, but I’m not an artist. I have gone to paint and sip classes and recently started doing them online. A few days ago I found your sunset snowman hugs and painted it, and I was so pleased with the results. So I looked through your videos and found this holiday horse. I have horses, I love horses and always wanted to paint them, but when I tried, they always turned out looking like a cartoon. I tried this and I am so happy with how it turned out! Donna, i never thought I could paint animals myself, until I did a painting for my friend EagleWolf for his birthday, I had a howling wolf and an eagle sitting in a tree, my friend was both shocked and surprised with my painting , he said I did very good on the details of the fur and feathers. You can doing it, just close your eyes and visualize the animal and go from there .

I did your halflinger horse for my grand-daughter last year and it came out beautiful until I put it next to yours. but I was happy with it. Hi Cheryl, use more white when mixing your colors for the background. Have fun painting!
If your horse is Mr Eds cousin he most likely would be complimenting you on the gorgeous portrait you painted of him, and in return of the favor he would share his sugar cubes with you, not that you need any you are sweet as can be now.🐎🍎
