Brilliant advice, Jon. We were at Juilliard at the same time. That shirt is the “non plus ultra” of outfits for this piece. Bravo! I would like to know why Gershwin never notated a doubling of speed in those measures of the big tune with 8th notes, which go faster than the main theme. Did we all inherit that tradition from his own performance recordings, since it’s not written in? I caution every pianist to carefully analyze the first chord they play. It starts on an A-flat augmented chord. A friend told me that he sat through the orchestral intro sweating bullets, because he couldn’t remember what his first chord was! We should learn from his mistake. I took that to heart and always play it with confidence. I can’t forget his tale of terror.

Great video!! This is such a difficult and magnificent piece, which I have started practicing a while ago, but got bogged down in so many places and had to put it to the side. These tips are really helpful to convince me to get back to it!

Absolutely brilliant!! This piece of music has so much going on. You could study it for years. I am in awe of such work and it makes me wish I would have paid attention to learning music theory when I got my first instrument. A recorder when I was in third grade. I have learned enough music theory now to be aware of how much I don’t know. It’s bittersweet. I love that I have something to learn in my latter years, but I wish I had learned music theory long ago. I’m sure I would be a far better musician today. The only thing I can do is keep playing. Which I plan to do until I physically can’t anymore.

Thanks for this video. I'm trying to learn the orchestral version just for the heck of it. I'm trying to get it good enough so that I would actually be capable of playing with an orchestra if needed.

Yes, those piano patterns are tough but can we talk about the patterns on his shirt? They are SO complex. That’s my exact style.
