Dude, I get a sick feeling in my stomach just LISTENING to that story about missing a ceremony.... I can't even imagine. I might've crawled into a hole and never come out again. I'll set double alarms from now on.

This was my 4th wedding I've filmed. I was already tired from working a 7hr shift from my day job, so having a glidecam as my only stabilizing equipment wasn't the best idea. It had been a while since I had used it. I was tired and used little discipline as I walked around the wedding "documentary style"... I also neglected to pack a spare battery, so I missed the speeches, the mother/son and father/daughter dances, the brides father singing a song, an interpretive dance, and the cake cutting. I thought all this was happening after the dinner, so I was in a back room trying to charge my battery enough to get the rest of the reception. FAIL! Because the glidecam was swinging, Warp Stabilizer couldn't save the footage without making it look super weird. Lesson learned. I have a wedding next week and have purchased a tripod, monopod, a fluid film head, more sd cards, more batteries, and microphones. My failures forced me to "step my game up" and I feel very confident that I will never let this happen again.

My last wedding was the first one I did for family, and the ceremony began without me and my 2nd shooter because I took too long to explain my plan. We rushed in, without micing-up the groom, and as I was locking my tripod into place, the ball head slipped and my audio recorder jerked out of my camera's hot shoe. It smacked onto the floor and it was followed by a very audible, "Oooooh" from the guests. That was my family's first impression of the work I do, and I felt so humiliated that my 2nd shooter spent the rest of that night making sure I didn't have an anxiety attack. I was able to pull it together and finish the shoot, and I've gotten nothing but compliments from my family since, but...that moment still really hurts, to the point that it's giving me nightmares for the next wedding shoot I have in a couple weeks.

+SNORKYMEDIA Good reason why I always talk to the videographer or photographer before shooting a wedding, so they we understand each other. Generally if I'm the photographer I work around the videographer, as because I also shoot video I know it's less easy to move around and you can't really edit people out. But generally I'm working with people I know, so mostly not an issue, but I have heard some horror stories before.

Not at a wedding, but I hooked my H4N to the venue soundboard to record a remote interview. The sound guy turned down the house music but didn't cut it completely. It wasn't audible in the venue but I have wonderful quality interview audio backed with a solid recording of 'Gangsta's Paradise'. Thankfully, the VideoMic Pro was turned on and plugged in!

I was one morning in a hurry, so I just grabbed my bags and left the house. One hour drive to the groom and I realise that I left all of my batteries on the charger. Luckly I had a GoPro with a few batteries and I was just a second shooter, so I literally filmed the entire wedding on a GoPro. I had to get it on my Glidecam too, so what I did is I put my camera on the glidecam and a GoPro on the hotshoe mount. It all turned out really great, despite the fact that I don't have a LCD for it, so I used the app which takes a lot of battery life, so I was charging the batteries non stop lol

  • @KidsWithGuns1992

+Hrvoje Bazina Yeah that's why I always keep tonnes of AA's and a battery pack in my bag, never take them out, in case if I'm charging batteries and I forget to grab them I can use the AA's. They wouldn't last all that long, but usually some time after the ceremony during photo shoot to quickly stop somewhere and get a bucket load more. But I usually charge the entire day before if I'm home, and throw all the finished ones in the bag and leave charging ones out - worst case scenario missing a battery or two out of five.

Always have more than one source of audio for the ceremony, and never rely on just the audio system provided by the venue. Make sure your gear is there as backup so that if the venue equipment messes up, your audio is still fine. Also, when filming, keep checking the recording indicator. I can't tell you how many times I've "got a shot", then hit the record button to stop recording and instead find that only now is it recording.

K A, this is one of your most helpful videos. In addition to the helpful stories in the comments, the information presented is real world and very educational. Thank you for opening up and sharing what you have learned from your mistakes. I hope you do more of these types of real world lesson videos. As for my biggest mistake, well, it was almost exactly like the worst mistake you shared. When I heard how you explained missing a ceremony because you took a nap, my heart went out to you and I empathized your pain. It was 20 years ago, but I did the same thing...got everything prepared in the morning, took a nap, but instead of over sleeping, I mixed the start time of the ceremony with a different ceremony (on another date). As soon as I realized my mistake, I drove 100 mph to get to the ceremony, which was half over when I arrived. Like yours, my stomach was turning and I completely felt embarrassed. As I fumbled to set up my tripod and camera in the balcony, I hit record just as the bride said, "I do". Man, was that an experience I never want to go through again. Double, triple, quadrapel check the start times and dates, friends!

Oh my goodness you helped me so much with this. I felt terrible often because I couldn't deliver on the timeline but this is just so uplifting to know that a professional like you has had these problems too. One of my biggest issues is that miscommunication on payment. I had a client who I did a graduation event for. They told me I could wait to complete their event because they would be out of town for a few months. I said ok. Bad idea. When they came back and I had their video all finished they said I had taken too long to finish. I could have fixed this by instead offering to mail or email the file early to the client regardless of them being out of town. I agreed at this time because I was overwhelmed with projects. Another time I was at an event and our team was getting to running out of batteries. My team members actually both left to get them and my other videographer left also having a prior engagement leaving me to run 2 cameras and the photography alone during the cake cutting ceremony. Needless to say I learned that day to always be prepared and let people know they cannot leave their positions unless I say it's a good time. Thank you so so much for posting this! It's literally a comfort and breath of fresh air. I was a bit worried about going into wedding videography because I'm so afraid I will make mistakes again but now I feel better because I know they were all learning experiences. Thank you and I'm going to learn from wedding film school all I can to truly make a bride and groom's wedding film amazing!

Sleeping though a ceremony sounds like a nightmare! My stomach turned a little while you were talking about it. Do you explain to the couple about all the things that could go wrong? We've had cameras just quit recording for no reason but most of the time we can just do a retake. At a wedding you can't ask them to do the kiss again. :)

+Garden Answer You can ask them to do a kiss again, but it depends on the kind of couple and type of guests. If you're a gregarious and personable person you can usually make a joke out of it and people won't mind, I haven't done it but worked with people who have an it has never been an issue - everyone laughed about it.

OMG... after shooting 12 weedings, this is my List of Fails: 1) At the biggest weeding I've shot, after the ceremony I drove my car for an hour looking for the bridal party & photographer. Completely missed the photoshoot, as I did not have the couple's cell phone no. 2) At that ceremony, the sound guy was live streaming the entry song off the Internet. The track suddenly stopped, as did the bridesmaid, mid-aisle. She had to freeze for a minute! 3) At my first weeding, I was in the 2nd row. Everybody stood up for the bridal entry, and lots of Christian singing, completely blocking my view. Tripod wasn't high enough. 4) At my second wedding, on a beach, the pastor got the audience to move all seats forward without warning - but my gear was plugged into power, etc. So I ended up further away. 5) My 4th weeding was just for family, but I bought the wrong audio adaptor, so had to use the DV Cam's crap audio for the edit. 6) My 12th weeding was nearly faultless, but my second shooter didn't listen, and shot all his footage at 720p. So the other 4 camera footage had to be resized down to 720p. Just a query: does something ALWAYS go wrong, at EVERY weeding? (Or is just me being a perfectionist?)

+Hot Pixels Photo & Video Not really, most weddings I do go smoothly. It seems to be affected by the collective mood on the day and the couple type. If the couple get stressed easy, or the photographer/videographer isn't relaxed and personable, things seem to go wrong - always and inevitably. Worst thing that's happened on one of the weddings I did was the limo driver just didn't rock up to the bride's house, so she was 40mins late to the ceremony. Fortunately, if the bride fucks up (or in this case the dude driving her), everyone allocates around her cause weddings are more or less really just about the bride. But if you're the photographer or videographer then.... not so much.

This is extremely encouraging. I am editing my first film and half the footage is awesome, the other half of the footage is nearly unusable due to exposure (NOISE) and white balance issues (I accidentally kept the WB on 'cloudy' and couldn't really see the monitor to tell what was going on with it). I also completely failed to capture any usable audio because I was totally unprepared, so LESSONS LEARNED. You have to fail in order to really learn and move forward it is just a very hard lesson.

Thank you so much for sharing your advice. Saves us and clients problems and frustration. My only advice is to double check your gear your bringing. I legit put all my tripod plates except 1 in my black clothes bag instead of my black camera bag and I couldnt go back to the cabin to get it in time so I had to improv by using tape to place my camera on tripods for a multicam set up. It was tacky and unprofessional but I did get the shot and never dropped the cameras. The couple were so happy with the footage but I know I did get some eyes with that set up.

Thank you for sharing! I thought I was the only one who had screw ups. My heart hurts from hearing some of the stuff. I'm glad that you made it through. Let me begin, lol: 1) I only had one tripod for stabilization. My second shooter had it, so I was handled for my shots. They came out shaky and had to use mostly 2nd camera shots. (I learned to invest in a monopod) 2) My assistant had out of focus shots. I couldn't use my shots because they were shaky. This made it hard to finally sit down and edit, because I was so embarrassed to speak to the couple about it. 3) I wasted money on a glide cam rental that I didn't use due to the weight. I should've practiced with it more before bringing it on a wedding. 4) I had tons of static on a wireless lav mic. It made some of the audio unusable.

Basicly we missed the start of the speeches. We somehow keep relying on someone to allert us that they are going start speeches or whatever but sometimes they just dont care to warn us. Im talking about irish weddings just in case somebody wonders.

Just rewatching this video lol. I would recommend also - never trust too much people you work with when you tell them to stay out of your shot - make sure you have a backup angle for important moments as a lot of times you will find either the celebrant, photographer or other suppliers in the shot... And also put things away from little kids reach! ahah Thanks for the tips Kraig.

Food and water is really important and breaks for sure, when I first started weddings I had the same thing of feeling like I should never stop shooting cause I thought it looked bad. But now I always take food and make sure I relax at times when I really don't need the footage (family photos, guests eating at reception or in between speeches, etc). That's why I get mad when I do a ten hour day and I'm not getting fed at the reception, I obviously don't say this to the client (or most of the time the reception, they often just ignore us even if paid for!), but how can you expect someone to work long physical hours without a proper meal.

Bro, I wanted to cry when u said u overslept...Anyway the worse things I've done really doesn't compare to ur list but the last wedding I shot, I thought I Was recording the ceremony and missed 10 mins of it. Good thing my B camera was rolling but it also stopped so I had a gap in visuals, audio was still rolling so during the edit I covered it with some reaction shots. I felt like an idiot because I wanted more to cut but thats all I had. Still nothing compares to ur horror stories.

Yes, I've been there too, but not on all of them. When I started shooting some of my first weddings by myself, I would have my DSLR with me and set up a GoPro for Wide footage. Twice I have come back to recover my GoPro and some how the mounts loosened up(weather, humidity and such) and I got great footage of everyone's feet. Additionally, when using some lenses with shallow depth of field(anything below 2.8), I didn't realize how crucial the focal points became. So, you get back home and start skimming your footage and "oh hell no!" Thanks for the tips and direction. BTW, your viewfinder(5D mark iii) has a different look on your BTS vid...magic lantern?

Overexposed most of the footage during the photoshoot on one of my cameras. Also on a really close friend I had a memory card fail 😳. Lost some footage toward the end. Zoom h1... Had it plugged into the mixer and dj bumped up the audio so everything was too loud. Ended up mixing audio on a song from 2 cameras. Thought I imported all footage... Missed last 5 clips, which was parents giving speech for couple. But hey, these all make us better! Awesome tips!

I feel like I made half of those mistakes on my first "real" wedding shoot. The best advice I can give is to always have a battery on charge somewhere while you're shooting. Simply swap them out when one gets low. I actually take about ten minutes to dump footage when there's a lull, that way I free up card space; that's only because I'm still on a budget. Also, communication is key. Get a "run sheet" if you can, so you know exactly what's happening, and where. Lastly, it's better to have too much footage than too little. Arrive early, leave late.

+Elephants Fly Good points but when you can afford more just get a tonne of batteries and cards, and leave all the fiddling until after the work day, otherwise you can leave stuff behind or muck up files, etc. But every single wedding I do I get a layout for the entire day, as I clearly outline that I'm unable to be expected to work without understanding the clients expectations of where and when I should be. I say it nicely of course, but it's included in contracts. So they run more or less like - (List of name's and contacts for entire bridal party) 10am - 10.45am Groom's House 145 Fake Street, Fake Town, 1243 15 mins travel to bride's house 11am - 12pm Bride's House 123 Fake Road, Fake City, 1244 Etc etc, pretty basic stuff but helps out a lot. Impossible to work otherwise.

Elephants Fly I would not empty sd cards during the weddding - one single wrong klick and the entire footage is gone. I carry a small orange bag with a strapp attached to my jacket in my inner pocket, containing all memory cards. I do not delete any file until ir is safely backed up at home in the cloud and on a external second drive.

Valeted at a hotel prep location when I could've parked on the street and paid for a meter... The bride of course wants me to wait until the very last minute while they are running late to record her and she is immediately escorted to the ceremony which is just over 30 minutes away. Me and my second shooter drove together and the valet guy takes 20 minutes even though there was no line - he said my car was "misplaced". Luckily I entered the church when the groom was walking down the aisle, but I didn't get to place a lav on him or the officiant because of it. Others have been simple like when I first got the zoom H1 setup I think I plugged the lav into the headphone port instead of the line in. Mainly just a matter of having enough card space and swapping batteries at the right time and not needing it in the middle of a bunch of first dances and long speeches. I've also unfortunately had the awkward light battery dies in the middle of the speech situation because it was on by accident

This is mine, not quite for wedding video, but it was for a photoshoot: I was in a rush and grab my backpack with camera gears and rush to the door. The thing I didn't realised is that I didn't zip up my backpack all the way up. When I get to the door (it is also the only place where it doesn't have carpet apart from kitchen and bathroom) I heard a high pitch "ziiiip" noise and then my camera, and lenses dropped out from my bag onto the door. My main camera and lenses were badly damaged and I had to use backup gears. Check your bag before you pick it up kids!

Zoom H1 and B3 in grooms pocket. I ask the groom who the officiant is and I mic him too. The groom actually had me put the lav mic on his Father who is a judge. Get home and there is 10 seconds of audio from the groom. I had to use the audio from the Father sitting on the first row. The mic got disconnected when I put the mic in his pocket. I have been using the the Rode Film maker kit with headphones. Always monitor audio now!

I charged all of my 4 batteries then in the morning when I woke up for my train ride I grabbed all the batteries but forgot the charger. well with the wedding I'm editing now, I just got caught up in how I was going to edit the sound afterwards that I ended up not thinking about shooting the video as separate to the sound and ended up with not enough video! Also as my last wedding my camera completely froze during the exit (which is THE most important bit at South Asian weddings) and I had to rely on another camera which only went up to 720! And then of course there is the shutter speed banding at my brother's wedding! It was the first time I had encountered it and I had no idea how to fix/prevent it! Very frustrating... but of course, every mistake is a lesson.

Only been in the game for a year and a half, but have a few. 1) double, triple check lavs and zoom H1s. Had a groom return the zoom after the ceremony and it had fallen out of his pocket. When he put the lav back on, he plugged it into the headphone jack and not the input. Had horrible audio for speeches at the reception. 2) Carrying maps as stated. Went to shoot a wedding in the mountains. After the reception, I had to go back to the cabin to grab a light forgotten during prep and got lost. Drove around making random turns for an hour because no GPS or phone signal. The wedding was over, yes but my second shooter was stuck at the reception venue clueless of whats going on (we drove together).

I had a memory card fail on me at my first Wedding. It was a 32GB card so that was a large chunck of my capacity for the day. Luckily it was right at the end of the ceremony so i was able to keep restarting it for some creative shots. I left the church ahead of the photographer and the bridal party so i could stop off and grab some more cards. I then purchased 2 32GB cards to replace the one. That was also lucky because later in the night i realised that i would have run short of memory by around 10GB if i had purchased just one 32GB card. I have now doubled my capacity!

I misplaced a DV tape of the ceremony years ago and the church cleaner found it weeks after the wedding! thought I'd die! mistakes can happen and equipment can let you down, I'd also suggest bringing paracetamol and immodium (diarrhea medication) for unexpected illness. Good tip about protecting your stuff, I've always left my bags in the reception dinning room and walked away believing it's safe but you're right... you Can't trust anyone and it only takes one time to ruin your business. Good video and I always watch your stuff... but I can't believe you went for a nap and woke up at 1pm on the day of a wedding!!?? who does that??

I felt sick fore the rest of the day. I had a lav on the groom and the photographer gave me some stills so I was able to fill the gap with a little slideshow and sound. :) Never used the 5D again for video.

Some of my mistakes so far have been: A) The address for the church went to the wrong city (even when you type the correct city in), thankfully I left early enough to still get there in time, and now I always check multiple map services. B) I lost a memory card at the reception, got lucky and a photographer found it. Now I double check placement of a full memory card, and I do an inventory on all gear before leaving venue. I've been lucky so far.
