I've been rehabbing a foot injury since 2009. The bagua that I learned in Thailand has been really helpful in rebuilding proprioception. Honestly, its been helpful for a whole lot of things--changed my life. Thank you for the refresher course here...will be implementing this into my daily routine.
When doing the basic kou bu/bai bu it’s important to also mention that the hips should be opening (bai bu) and closing (kou bu) in unison with movements. If you simply twist at the knees you will damage them.

wdym by opening and closing of the hips?
@markdonovan1540
3 жыл бұрын
@@Poemsforpisces ok, the hip joint opens to facilitate the turning of the leg which ensures the knee stays aligned with the ankle and hip bone part of the pelvis. This opening of hips requires a release of tension so that the groin area of the hip folds open or folds closed - as if opening and closing a book. It's not easy to explain, it requires a bit if awareness and practice. What people, especially beginners, often do is allow the knee to turn inward relative to the foot and ankle, which will put excess strain on knee ligaments. Over time this would likely lead to knee damage. Try to think of the ball and socket joint of the hip as a gate that swings open and closed, with the thigh, knee, ankle and foot all aligned below the point of rotation. The same applies to the outward rotation (or opening), care must be taken not to twist the knee. You need to rotate outwardly (opening) in the hip on the side of leg that is turning outward and rotate inwardly (closing) of the side of the leg that is turning inward. The ball and socket joint of the hip doesn't just open and close like a gate, because it can rotate in many directions, but in this stepping movement we are only getting the hip to open and close along a vertical axis. The knee can bend in line with this vertical axis, as knee joint is perfectly designed for bending inline with thighs and shins. The knee joint is not designed to twist against the line of the thigh and shin bones. Some twisting tension will occur in the knee joint if you allow knee joint to collapse/buckle inwards while turning the leg in, or if you allow the knee to push outward while turning leg outward. Twisting the knee joint will eventually cause damage, unless you take care of these movements and do exercises to strengthen knee ligaments. I hope this helps.

@@Poemsforpisces I'm glad you found it helpful. I've never learnt Baguazhang, although I find it interesting. However, I've been fortunate to have found a couple of excellent Taiji teachers over the years, so I am aware of some of the mechanics and energetics of the internal arts. I still consider myself a beginner in many aspects, so I still need to learn from others, as we all do. But the hard work of practice is something each one of us has to do for ourselves. It's important to do two things: start and continue. That's what my old Taiji teacher used to say. Unfortunately, I failed to continue after starting with a lot of enthusiasm. However, in recent years I have picked it up again, but it's almost like starting from the beginning again.
Not only is he an expert of wushu he's also a master motion graphics animator 💯!
so when do we learn the air scooter?

Ive been in karate for about 4 or 5 years, wanted to air bend and this is actually alot harder than it should be. Still not very hard to do but great focus is needed to do this practice properly and slowly. Fantastic i will be doing this kou bu and bai bu for balance

Thanks. I really want to learn the circle walking with the basic palm positions. My goal is to have a simple adjunct to my slow tai chi set, something that will raise my heart rate a little. I also understand that the static palm/arm postures have some of the benefits of Zhan Zhuang.
Your Bagua lessons are wonderful. More, more please.

when will part 3 be available?
I have plantar fasciitis, and I lost my thyroid to cancer in 2017 and have been struggling with all of the changes that has brought to my body (weight gain, chronic fatigue, brain fog, etc.). I've been wanting to learn bagua zhang for a few years now because I think it would be ideal for helping me heal my body and start getting back into shape. And, let's be perfectly honest here, I would not have discovered it if not for Avatar: The Last Airbender. So all of you above me in the comments (or below if you sorted newest to oldest) may be wanting to learn airbending because you're all a bunch of nerds (my people 🥰), but I am learning airbending for my health.
Although a fan of Avatar the last Airbender, and definitely want to learn air bending, I'm more here for learning a style to help me in my meditation, I do practice Tai chi, I'm actually getting myself to practice again and I want to learn qi gong as well, I've been told the 3 are connected and trying to learn more about each and so on. This is definitely a great video to begin with really can't wait to practice this more 😊
walk slowly, heel to toe - five seconds for each step. The inside leg should be square and the outside should guide. Most importantly, keep low, very low - your legs are just taking you for a walk while your body attacks/slips/blocks.
Thanks for showing the world my favorite Martial Art. Your Neji in real life
Thank you for these detailed instructions! And, I am just curious: your shoes look comfortable for this. What are they, please?
This is very good - Ba Gua walking is very complex. you can't get too much basics.

wow I was surprised by the beginning footwork, its actually how I walk naturally, got a bit of a flat foot haha
Thank you for such clear instruction and quality of video. Been doing this stepping all day now because of this.
Excellent instruction that anyone should be able to follow. I have never learnt Bagua, but this video might help me to at least get a feel for it. I have done a fair bit of Judo, Kung Fu and Taiji. However, this is quite different, although I can see it has a lot in common with Taiji principles. Most baguazhang videos go straight into the circling forms, without any basic foundation preparation, so this video definitely helps prepare a good foundation.
