He doesn't turn his outside foot in when he walks, which is why he looks funny walking the circle. In Chinese this is called 里直外扣, lizhiwaikou, inner step straight ahead and outer step turned inwards towards circle. His knees don't brush against each other; neither do his heels brush past each other when circle walking 磨膝蹭踝 moxicenghuai .

I practice TaeKwonDo with a Korean instructor. He studied soft style when his instructor went to America. When I started TKD and for many years, he used that stance to kick my ass time and time again.for a long, long, time. I eventually learned the basics of that stance and now I rarely get hit!

I have watched Liu Jingru's videos off and on for the last 25 years, and I practiced his movements and learned other styles of bagua. A week ago, I decided to look up his videos and try to figure out more of what his system meant. I finally figured out the 转身掌 and 回身掌 are a pair, just like all the other palms pair up. specifically with 转身, teh movements enter the circle, and with 回身 the movements leave the circle. But you didnt do that. I guess my understanding of these two movements was wrong.

the 转身掌is the fifth palm, is quite different as when I was learnt in young age, at that time, I had practiced in circle, big circle within small circles. I don't remember exact year, but quite long time age, I practice the 转身掌 as the video you watched. My master Liu Jingru and I had taught this palm in International Traditional Wushu Coaches Camp in 2015. The 回身掌, you are right, we practice leave the circle. The reason why I practice in the circle, only because the other 7 palms are in the circle, I prefer the 回身掌 is same as others. Haha. If you watch the movement, you will find movements are same. I hope to be able to maintain unity, all in the circle. If you practice leave the circle, 100 percent OK. thank you for watching. If you have anything want to know, keep in touch.

@@junfengwushu5659 @Junfeng Wushu thanks for replying. I curious then what the reason for 转身掌 is. My process to understand it began when I tried to determine what the difference in function with the 顺式掌. I considered how I could pair the other palms together. 单/双 is single and double, 顺/背 is with and against. 磨/翻 is bend over and bend back, then it clicked in my that 回身 leaves and comes back and I noticed 刘敬儒 enters and returns when he takes 12 steps in 阴阳鱼. Besides that, I'm curious how applications are learned. 刘敬儒 has somee examples in his dvds, but I don't think they are everything. There must be more drills like 五花炮 in 形意 or 推手 in 太极 which I'm sure you know, or 麶手 in 咏春 such you've probably at least heard of. Actually, there is a lot about bagua that I want to know.

@@bredmond812 转/磨 one 转 is when you practice, the first few movements is in the big circle, when you turn 转,you are in small circles, 1-3 rounds all ok, my master used to walk 12 steps in 阴阳鱼. and the other 磨 is practice in same place. I mean you walk in big circle, when you start to practice the movements, and until you finish the movements, all in one point (same place). hope you understand. I did not practice the small circles in 转 because I don't want to step my lawn, haha. Exactly, as you said the dvd cannot have everything. In fact, there are lots of changes when you facing different people, i.e. tall, short, strong, thin etc. With the time and practice, people will have sense or feeling, this application better use in this way or that way.

I am a disciple of Sun Zhijun's lineage :) The style continued to be developed after Cheng Ting Hua's death and some disciples living in different areas created more advanced routines. Routines may be different, but essence is the same. The legitimate forms are all legitimate even if the movements are different. Confusing, yes, but rich with perspective.

Yeah, it's hard not to notice that. My instructor told me that the legs should move like scissors. Also the "mud step" doesn't really slide on the ground, it just hovers horizontally. These techniques are for energy cultivation and dexterity. Of course when you're in a fight you use the "chicken step" as is demonstrated here. This Ba-Gua looks a lot more like Shaolin than Wu-Don.

Lui Jingru ruined the form. he kept altering it, and it lost its essence. I don't believe he has anything other than good martial politics. I certainly wouldn't be following his method. Not if you want the truth. He wasn't much good 20 years ago and he hasn't improved. His students don't seem to have any real power and application which is pretty solid evidence that he's a show pony.. When he came to Australia he was more interested in going to the Strippers then he was in imparting anything of real skill..

Real talk I saw a video of him doing push hands, not special. Too much emphasis on carving out his place in history IE stylizing the moves so they can be identified with his style... Lots of energetic errors disconnected and not enough practical fighting experience I would say

That's not very nice to say. I'd argue that Liu Jing Ru's style shows more foundation and structure than other variants of Ba Gua. Of course everyone's interpretation is different - who is to say who's right and wrong in their style? I have trained under Liu Jing Ru, Han Yan Wu and Liu Deming and I have no doubt about the martial applications of Cheng style taught through this lineage. If you are interested in seeing Han Yan Wu's form he has a number of videos on The Tube. Regardless of what you think about Grand Master Liu Jing Ru as a person, he has popularised Ba Gua in China and promoted its learnings as a cultural asset. As far as I can determine he has done that for the good of everyone - not himself. He's no rich man. He's a humble disciple.
