When I was a young E-3 stationed in Germany, I was waiting for my chow one very cold fall day. I was in the omelet line. As I moved forward, I saw the biggest block of cheddar cheese I have ever seen. This was good news as I always ordered an "All the Way!!!" omelet. I was an 11-B (Bang-Bang) on a small old WW2 German Air Field, converted to an Army post with around 5,000 solders (3rd Armored Division, I was an APC M113A2 Driver - that's how old I am) within a 2-mile fenced circle on a hill over looking the local area. I got up to the 92G Dude (E-4) and ordered my meal. He explained to me that, "we are out of cheese". At that moment, we both looked down at the mountain of yellow-dyed cheddar delight between us. I informed him that I was not in a Cav. unit, but I could scout, track, and spot a big-ass ton of freaking cheese. I instructed him to start grating the (F-word, in present continuous verb form) cheese. I was told that if he grated the cheese for me, he would have to grate cheese for everybody else in line. I lost my sh*t. I locked his heals and shouted at him and told him that I signed a contract with the Army to kill people so people like you don't have to and you signed a contract to feed me, so start grating my cheese so I can have a full belly in case the Reds invade through the Fulda Gap and I'll be dead in 11 seconds, but you can continue a career at Waffle House outside of Fort Gordon, GA grating cheese for the "in the rear with the gear" soldiers. Young men and women of Earth. Thank you for thinking about service and the US Army. But... Come on... A cook? Do you really want to open 317 large cans of corn and stir (until the bitter E-6 says to stop) it in a cooking pot larger then my mother in law's ass at 3:00am in a field tent? When a person goes to a sushi bar, they don't order the chicken fried steak. You get the fresh fish. Want to join the Army? Join the REAL ARMY and you too can be a dumb infantrymen like me! Peace!!! LOL

@@ronnyh3049 He was being lazy and didn't want to support the troops that fight. Simple. He DID need a strong mess SGT (and not a pussy) to explain that basic idea to that waste of a solider. You should know that. He needed me locking his heals. The good news is you guys can always get a job at Waffle House. "Don't mess with the cooks"??? If they do their job, yes. LOL. LOL. LOL. Say hi to Tom Hanks for me.

I was a 92G it is a hard job. In the field you work about 10 hours just cooking, cleaning and prepping for the next meal. But I do miss it too

I'm a head chef of 11 years in the restaurant industry looking to go in as 92G but I do not want to start as a bottom cook. What advice could you give someone like me with extensive experience with opening and running multiple restaurants who wants to take their skillset into the Army?

Well, I'm not in the Army and I'm not a chef. But I am a Marine and I'm a mechanic. Seeing as you've been a head chef for eleven years, I'd probably take a wild guess that you're a lot older than I am. But I do have experience in the military. So, my advice to you would be this: Do not mistake your experience as a chef for experience doing the job that food specialists in the military do. Expect to start from the ground up. Once you get past basic training, obviously you'll have to be trained in your MOS. Go in with an open mind and with the idea that anybody can teach you a thing. You will have to start at the bottom of the barrel. But if your experience speaks for itself, once you get to whatever unit you're stationed at and begin working, somebody will take notice and you'll start becoming respected easily. That's how it works for us when we get experienced mechanics in our shop. Sure, in the beginning we don't know them and we assume they have to work from the ground up, but as soon as we see what they can do we begin throwing larger task and more responsibility their way. I'd say with the experience you've got under your belt, if you do decide to become a food service specialist, it won't be at all difficult for you to do that. Just remember though. Knowing your job is only one aspect of being a good service member. You can excel at it, but if you do not grasp all the other concepts of being a soldier, whether that is discipline, physical fitness, maturity, service before self, etc.. then you will fail.
