It’s a shame what they did, but at least the spot is technically still there so people can see how crazy it was in person. There’s a famous school in Atlanta; Summerour middle school.... it was the Mecca for East Coast in line skating.. A few years ago they just leveled the entire school and rebuilt it completely different with no skate spots. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Honestly, a lot of people if they were lucky enough to be there at their absolute peak with perfect weather, and a good camera, could do this gap… I don’t know about a 360 flip, but I trust that on a really good day you could’ve landed an Ollie 🦾

I went to PLHS... Class of '99. The right to left approach had zero run-up, unless the door to the hallway (think it was the 400 Building) was open. Even then it would be minimal, and you'd risk nailing that wall of stairs on the drop-in. The route Jamie and everyone else took was the optimal approach. Blast from the past on this vid.

There was barely any run up on the original line. I suspect there's less on the right hand line. For the record it was almost landed by a skateboarder in the nineties, Jamie Thomas, but he only did it once. It's in his part on one of the Zero skate vids, Thrill of it All, I think. Most famous missed trick of all time lol. He attributes a lack of speed to not landing it, so a shorter or more awkward line might be a dubious proposition. At least you have ankle support in skates though, and specialist insoles are a lot better too. You can undoubtedly soak up more impact on modern equipment.

  • @flyingonblades

Oh yeah I agree with you. I’m not saying that it’s a reasonable thing to try it these days, but there are a lot of skateboarders, rollerbladers, BMXers and scooters that do very unreasonable stunts all the time lol

@@flyingonblades Can't push the envelope of skater and equipment without trying the next impossible gap/trick. If the best stop pushing the limits the evolution stops, so there will always be people that attempt the impossible, and when they overcome it it all goes to the next level. There are sacrifices though, Thomas was going to go back to it but he had three knee surgeries in three years and after that being able to skate again was more important than chasing his white whale. There are other gaps with a safer margin though, just as high if not higher, but less iconic I guess.

@@toneohm215 oh yes to be clear... the person who almost landed it was a rollerblader, but it would be 10 times easier to land on rollerblades. Jamie’s attempt was amazing but he didn’t come as close mostly because the gap would be way more difficult on a skateboard.

@@flyingonblades Thomas landed it almost perfectly feet on bolts, but it looks like the board snapped at the front bolts as his weight came down on it. Even though he didn't stick it, I still think he came closest. His landing was perfect but for the follow through lol. Just too much impact at the time. A modern flight deck with two plys of fibreglass in with the birch laminate, and good impact absorption from modern skater insoles, would have gone a long way towards making it. It's quite the drop though, whatever you're riding! Edit: Honourable mention, and style points to the inliner who tried a one footed wall ride as he came down, though he took quite a nasty spill, so I'm not sure if it was intentional or if he felt he was too close and it was reflex? I have no clue when it comes to wheels on the feet.

No I definitely have not. I’ve jumped off my fair share of roofs before but the leap of faith is probably at least 3 or 4 feet higher than anything I’ve done(probably 5-6ft).... all I was saying in the video is that I was crazy enough to attempt it when I was 16 to 20 years old. I’m 3000 miles away from Point Loma HS. I never got to take one of those epic California skate trips unfortunately. Back then I would’ve been pretty confident about landing it but statistically speaking I’m sure I wouldn’t have lol

He stomped the middle of the board and the nose because he didn’t land it correctly, he got ahead of the board. He said so himself. Didn’t land it. Doesn’t make it that much less badass, insane trick and insanely close on first try

@@stevebean1234 You’re right he got ahead of the board and his position combined with the impact broke the board. What I mean to say is if the board didn’t break even in that position I believe with his leg position he could have absorbed the impact and road it out. But the board did break and thats because he wasn’t over the trucks. I can’t really argue this because the fact is he didn’t land it.

I’m still durable but I was made of steel from ages 17-32 and could’ve definitely attempted this without any injury. There’s been dozens of people who’ve attempted the “leap of faith”. It’s so famous that the school is immortalized as the “School 2” level in “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2”. No one has ever been seriously injured attempting it aside from 1 or 2 broken ankles. I guess what it boils down to is that because it’s so huge, only the best of the best have attempted it and they can take the fall. Anyone that would kill them selves trying it would also be too scared to attempt it. Unfortunately I’ve never been to California so I never even had the opportunity to try it before they installed the elevator. It’s still safer than skydiving! :P
