Leaning On Your Inside Edge? Skating and Pronation - Solution to Better Balance & Pain Relief?

Спорт

Do you lean on your inside edge when you're skating? Even when you're not trying to? You might be pronating. If you overpronate, you may develop foot pain and injuries. I tried out Jackson Ultima Supreme Insoles - Do they work better than Superfeet insoles and Dr Scholl's? Can you put them in Edea skates?

Hi Aimee, I got Concerto's a couple of months ago with super feet. For the past two months, I've been adjusting my blades over and over, because I kept leaning inwards. I've probably been the the rink at least 10 times with my drill, adjusting over and over. I saw this video a week ago, and decided to give the Jackson insoles a try. I skated with them for the first time today, and holy - a world of difference. Right away, I could do my one foot glides with no problem. I'm super happy I found this video. Thank you!

This video could not be more timely. I skate in Jackson's and absolutely love them. I do however have an old injury from when I was a teenager and had a riding accident. As a result all of the top ligaments in my right foot were torn. To this day, it gives me some discomfort but my Jackson Freestyles are breaking nicely and it doesn't hurt when I skate in them. I was recently reading up on these insoles because as. result of that injury my right foot pronates inward considerably and it makes it difficult to do one foot glides on that foot or anything else without sinking into my inside edge. I am definitely going to get some, and thanks for explaining the different types for different feet. My boots are Medium, but as you know Jackson's tend to be on the wide side as apposed to other brands. Also, I appreciate so much your videos as they are so concise and informative. So a big thank you to you Aimee.

I started skating 1.5 yrs ago, at 40 yrs old, and I use a Jackson Softskate. I have terrible pronation in my right ankle. A backward outside edge quickly becomes a flat and then an inside. I have tried many versions of various cheap supports. They offered minimal help and maximum pain. I'm so excited to hear there are better options tailored to skaters and look forward to giving a rave review! Keep Calm! 👑 Skate On!

  • 2 жыл бұрын

Glad you liked the video! You may benefit from a skate with a higher stiffness rating - Softskates may not be supportive enough for an adult working on edges. Additionally, there are options with more advanced skates where the blade can be repositioned to help with pronation issues. I have a video especially for adult skaters here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dnZkys6JfbzRkso.html

I just wanted to come on here and thank you Aimee. I am a hockey player and my feet have been pronating for YEARS. At first I thought(and everyone else told me) that its normal and will fade with time, but it never did. I had been struggling whilst playing to get an outside edge on my right foot(pronates more) and it was hindering my play. I could'nt turn, crossover(more than once), etc. without tripping up or losing balance. I stumbled across this video about a month or so ago, and bought the 7 degree insoles right away hoping that they would help. They helped so much more than I ever could have hoped, within 2 weeks I was able to use my outside edge, and started practicing it as much as I could. I tried buying the superfeet comfort insoles thinking they would have a similar effect, but they felt SOOO much worse than the Jackson Supremes, so I returned them and switched back immediately. I kinda felt like the 7 degree was too much, so after about 2 weeks of using them, I bought the 5 degree insoles and have been using them since. I honestly dont know which of the 2 insoles are right for me because in the 5 degree insoles I feel like I still pronate a bit, but in the 7 degree I feel like my foot leans to the outside edge a little much(might just be in my head)(If you've read this far, please let me know which you think would be better for me). Either way, it's been so amazing finally being able to skate like normal(sort of). I'm still learning to use my outside edge on my right foot as well as I can on my left(just takes time and practice), but thanks to these insoles I am able to skate much better than ever before. Even if they are not specifically meant for hockey players, I would 100% recommend giving these a try, they are absolutely AMAZING!!!!

  • 7 ай бұрын

Thank you so much for leaving such a thoughtful comment! While they are marketed toward figure skaters, they were tested with hockey skaters and work just as well for them (although the 3" degree doesn't work as well in a hockey boot). I'm glad to hear that they have helped you!

My left foot pronates, which is really hindering my spins and holding a steady edge for waltz jump take-offs. I tried the blue (normal width) and while it helped with the pronation, I found it rock hard and painful on my feet. Also- it seems to absorb the cold so my toes are frozen after 20 minutes. I currently have the Edea E-sole ergonomic insoles in my boots and they are super comfortable. Any ideas on how I could create the same effect? Have any of your skaters tried them underneath their normal insoles?

I very much want to try this in my hockey skates. I pronate so badly and it makes it hard to get to my outside edges. And causes a ton of outside edge of my foot pain. I have freakishly wide and flat feet through the center and have problems with any thing that locks my foot into a boot. My inline skates I can adjust the frame position to compensate. But my hockey skates are riveted on and I am stuck. This could be a great solution for me for next year. I signed up on their site for the updates.

I bought these (the 7 degrees ones) but didn't make much of a difference. My new coach told me I might need new boots as I have been using them for a while. I have beginner Edea skates and I just came to the conclusion that even though there is no creasing, the boot is too soft and I probably need more support at the ankle. I think the best thing to do is talk to a tech and get advice from them in person.

@AimeeRicca, I purchased the Jackson Freestyles, and noticed when trying to balance on the ice, my skates would constantly lean on the inside edges. I was aware I had some pronation but didn't believe it bad enough to need compensating. Would you recommend considering getting my blades realigned as well? I am skating on the Aspire XP blades that were included.

  • 10 ай бұрын

The Jackson Freestyle will accommodate blade repositioning because it's attached with screws (not rivets), so that is definitely an option and something that most skaters do! However, ensure that your skates are also tied correctly and are the correct size. Sometimes, incorrectly sized (length or width) or improper lacing can cause the issue as well. I recommend having your coach take a video showing you skating to give to your tech so that they can troubleshoot.

I have a tendency to overpronate when running/jogging/walking/skipping/sitting/you name it, and sometimes skating too, especially with my left foot that likes to invert as opposed to my right foot that's generally more prone to everting, instead, but oddly enough, my skates oftentimes tend to somehow force my feet into a more neutral position, albeit not always very comfortably. Lately, I've been having issues with my right foot randomly going numb, heavy, and or tingly, if not cramping, with increased localized, as well as overall widespread pain, doing general everyday activities, but interestingly even more so, while skating, and moreover on longer ice or off-ice training sessions... How do you know which degree of Jackson Supreme Insoles might be right for you? I have a wide forefoot, but my feet narrow out behind my toes, at the midfoot, and even more towards my heels. I also have fallen arches. In the past, I had high arches, but now I have super low, barely existent, though not entirely "flat" painful arches and feel that I definitely need more arch support. I'm also very heavy on my feet, with loose joints and a compromised gait pattern that require greater shock absorption from my footwear. I also currently skate in Wide Jackson Freestyles, with stock Aspire XP blades that I'm honestly not too fond of and hope to upgrade ASAP. These blades just don't seem to work very well for me, compared to others I've skated on in the past.

I'm 22 and a beginner skater. I have very flat and wide feet with no arch at all, and my knees bend inward when I bend them. At the moment I have my old insoles (orthopedic insoles shaped to my feet to support my arch) in my skates, and with that I have no pain in my feet and I've been skating for almost 5 months now. However I just found out I have shin splints... As you said, very common when you over pronate. Obviously my docters are telling me to take a long break, but I feel like I just started! Do you think these insoles would help...? Or have I misunderstood😅

I started skating in rentals about four weeks ago and got my first pair of skates two weeks later. I got the Risport Electra. Unfortunately my skating is just getting worse now, and I have so much pronation in my ankles. I'm thinking about stopping since I'm not seeing a lot of progress... These insoles seem great though, might give them a try

  • 7 ай бұрын

Were you fitted for your Risport? If so, go back to the shop and talk to the skate tech - they should be able to help you! One possibility is the way that you're tying them - My experience with the Electra is that the laces they come with can make it difficult to get them laced tight enough. Your tech can help you determine why youre having this issue. Regardless, these insoles are also help! Right now, they are difficult to find but I'm helping to change that. @ Yeah I got fitted, but tbh we don't have a lot of specialists in our country, ice skating isn't that big here. I've had my skates for over a month now and this week I had to get off the ice after 30 minutes because the cramping in my arches got too bad to continue skating. I'm only doing very basic skills like forward skating, one foot glides and that kind of stuff... I'm pretty sure I overpronate, since my arches hurt and I can't hold one foot glides for long because I'm falling on my inside edge. Honestly, a good pair of insoles seems like my only hope. I'm seriously considering stopping, because I can't make any progress like this... 😔

  • 6 ай бұрын

The pronation could also be that you’re not tying them tight enough which is very common! The pain in your arch could be that your in too narrow of a boot. You may be able to have your skate tech make adjustments.

Do you have any videos of pronating figure skaters? Who managed to advance their ice skate journey into advance stages despite having knock knees/pronating?

  • 6 ай бұрын

Unfortunately, you won't be able to advance while you are pronating. Either you have to use equipment such as using appropriate insoles in adequately supportive skates, or with physical therapy - sometimes a combination of both! Pronation is very common though and most skaters experience it and are able to correct for it! On the other hand, knock knees is a different condition. Not all skaters that pronate have knock knees. Typically, knock knees only younger skaters as the condition usually part of a child's normal growth and development.

Do you think Supreme Insoles would work in a hockey skate? Do you know if the sizing is universal or are they ladies shoe sizes? Didn't see a sizing chart on their website. Thanks Aimee for posting

  • 2 жыл бұрын

You're welcome, Chris! They were tested in hockey skaters! The sizing is consistent with Jackson sizing, which is different from regular shoe sizes but not specifically women's sizing. You can view the size charts here: jacksonskate.com/pages/sizing-charts The best thing to do is to reach out to professional tech that can help you with sizing. I'm a hockey player and I have been struggling with my pronation issue for quite sometime. I tried the Superfeet and putting padding underneath to accentuate the issue. Still looking for a substantial orthopedic solution, I happened upon this video and ordered a pair of Supreme footbeds from Jackson. immediately I had substantial improvement. These innersoles have improved my skating and elevated my level of play. (Scored the game winning goal first time with them in my skates.) There is nothing of this type targeted for hockey skates, I emailed Jackson recommending they market this innersole to the hockey community.

  • Жыл бұрын

That's awesome! I'm glad to hear that I could help you find a solution! Sport Maska Inc., the Montreal-based owner of the CCM Hockey brand, acquired Tournament Sports Marketing, Inc., the owner of the Jackson Ultima and Atom brands last December. So, its possible that together they may brand a similar insole toward the hockey community!

I have had it checked out by MD and physio but no stress fracture or anything other than pain and pain only when I skate-only on my left foot (dominant). I want to try these insoles and think I might need the 7 degree one even tho I have normal width foot and normal arch. There is no one in my town to advise me. Do you think I should try these? Should I go with 7 considering the superfeet carbons aren't helping. Thx

  • Жыл бұрын
