As a 4 year high school student under the tutelage of Mr Clark, this scene and many others were sensationalized. I was also in concert choir when the music teacher was let go. Mr. Clark was loud but he was not rude. He didn't yell in anyone's face like that. Yes he did some things in a very unorthodox manner but I promise you he kept us safe and protected. Until this day I carry the lessons he taught me with me and I will be forever grateful to Joe Clark. He was indeed a great man.

Captain Hook Clark didn't have an ego, he was trying to regain control of a school that lost control years prior to his arrival, no other principal wanted to work at that school so dr. Napier & Rosenberg practically begged Clark to come there because they knew that Clark could turn that school around, Ms. Elliot's problem was she was frustrated with the way the school was after all those years and she was taking those frustrations out on mr. Clark because she was already irritated that she had to be there, mr. Clark coming in the room just added fuel to that fire

I like that this movie realistically showed the good and the bad of someone like Joe Clark. He cared about the kids and took his job of turning the school around seriously. He was tough. At the same time, at least as he was portrayed in this movie, he was fanatical and couldn’t grasp that you cannot bully everyone, that adults generally won’t tolerate being infantilized, and that none of us are perfect enough to be that sanctimonious all the time.

I don't feel that you can learn under his reign. It is one thing to discipline, but to intimidate others is another thing. He couldn't see what Mrs. Elliot was trying to do with the concert in NY. The kids would be excited to go to the big city and do this. It might even make them pursue music or maybe something else. It does help a school when they do these things. Clark couldn't get it because he is an idiot.

I liked Morgan Freeman' s character Joe Clark for the most part despite his hot-headedness. However, he was wrong here because she was just doing her job. Clark's main issue was that his temper and lack of empathy alienated the very people that he needed on his side. Now I agree that she was a bit out of line for speaking to him in the manner she did given he was the principal but understandably she was venting her frustrations. Instead of firing her he could have just suspended her for a short period.

Doesn't really excuse him undermining the authority of his staff by *interrupting* their class to tell them to do something that could just be mentioned after class or between them. @@axonis2306 I think he's referring to another scene in the movie where he and his friend (who is in a position even above him) have an argument and his friend chews him out. As for the American school system, this vaguely looks like our school system. This is an old movie so it's not really accurate for today. However the movie is supposed to represent a school in a low income area multiple decades ago. The way school funding works in America is that they are funded by the local communities taxes. One problem this can lead to is that low income areas don't have a lot of money going towards their school system. (This is still true to today but funding for the low income schools will also pull from higher income areas to to try and prevent the school from falling behind.) It's also worth noting that children in low income homes are also more likely to end up not caring about school or getting themselves into serious trouble. The reasons behind this are complicated but I tutor kids like this. So this story is basically doing 2 thing to try and achieve one outcome. Those two things were one, fixing up the school. Two, fixing g up the kids. The school was in shambles and full of bad teachers and people who were fine with just getting by and not worried about the children they were teaching. The kids were mixed. Many of them had no respect for the school or for each other and these kids ruined the environment for the kids who did care. Thus these kids either had to leave or change their aditude towards school. What this resulted in was a school that could function as a school once the changes were made.

I will believe what I want and as someone who works in education, the Principal may “run the school” as you claim, but that does not give him/her the power to terminate a teacher. Only the Board of Education has that power to dismiss a teacher, tenure or otherwise. www.google.com/amp/s/www.newjerseylawyersblog.com/amp/rights-untenured-teachers-new-jersey-employment-law/ www.google.com/amp/s/www.esqnj.com/amp/teachers-principals-superintendents-administrators-and-other-edu.html Furthermore, the music teacher he fired in the movie was never fired in real life. That teacher was transferred two years after he got there. www.google.com/amp/s/www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1989-03-03-ca-285-story.html%3f_amp=true So you can believe what you want and I will choose to believe facts and history. It’s funny to see people say Clark was right lol y’all do realize that Clark didn’t just act this way with Mrs. Elliott, he did to to every teacher in that school. Mrs. Elliott, like Mr. Darnell both were the first to not take his bullying, stand up for themselves, and fire back. The issue I think is since Mrs. Elliott was a white woman teaching the students Mozart, Clark felt that didn’t help in the long run with children who can’t read or write, so he felt getting rid her was better.

I graduated high school with decent grades and didn’t know a single lyric of our school song……nor that we had one in the first place. Plus elective courses and extracurricular activities are a good way to improve their GPA. Plus it can go on their college applications. Stuff like this look good on college applications and it teaches real life lessons such as teamwork.

This never happened. There was a music teacher that Mr. Clark had some run ins with, but she taught everyone the school song and was transferred to a different school two years after he got there. People should remember that movies are fiction. They change and leave out a lot of stuff in order to make the story interesting and compelling as a movie. We should always keep that in mind.
