Exactly this movie has a special place in my heart, it makes me cry tears of joy. I'd say it's my second favorite movie behind my personal fav the five heartbeats but that's just me. If it wasn't the five heartbeats it'd be this wonderful movie that changed many kids lives growing up in the late 80's and early 90's.

I didn't have an issue with him being tough on the teachers, because they're part of the reason the school was so terrible to begin with. Leadership, just like change, starts at the top. This may sound weird, but when it comes to discipline, it's much easier to start hard and eventually loosen the reins, than to do it the other way.

Kids find any excuses not to listen that's a small example

I have been blessed with teachers that made a difference as how I see myself. They didn't have to go out of their way all the time, to do that extra thing; just to be their and treat you like a human being. I think of them all of the time. I was prolific in art. My God, everything was free in that room. We made our own canvas, frames, stretch boards, and I was one of the first to be introduced to the new acrylic paints. My Jr. High teacher warned my High School teacher about me. The first day of my senior year, I was called up to the teachers desk.(Mr. Bach) He opened the grade book, and put an 'A+' in the first box by my name. Drew a line through the rest of the page and closed the book. Turned to me....."I just wanted you to know that even if you don't do another damned thing in my class this year, you already have an 'A+'........I didn't want you to worry." True story.

Your character analysis of Joe Clark starting at the 16:20 mark is spot on. I couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s very true that people who are so good at their job but also so set in their ways because of their experiences, they have a lot of problem not seeing it any other way. They expect things to be what they experienced. Even color aside, kids back in the 60’s were raised very differently than kids were in the 80’s. In the 60’s, there were rules, and they were followed. Because if they weren’t followed, the kids were disciplined at home and were actually even more scared of their parents than their teachers. Parents were strict and they backed the teachers, not their kids. Me and my siblings were raised that way. We followed the rules because if we didn’t, there was hell to pay when we got home. The kids who were in the clip throwing toilets out the window, ripping shirts off girls and beating up teachers, clearly weren’t disciplined at all. Now speaking as someone who is and has been an educator for almost 20 years, what I’ve learned is that you have to realize times change and kids change and will act accordingly to how they’re raised and what they’ve experienced. You have to be able to modify your expectations and adjust to your students, not the other way around. Joe was a great educator, but that was his one and only flaw, was not being able to fully adjust. You see him as the film goes on making some adjustments with the kids and staff, like jumping rope, joking around, and those great speeches, but he couldn’t fully adjust, which is probably why he had so many people against him trying to get him fired. It really wasn’t Joes fault tho, first of all he was far too late in his career to be able to fully adjust his style and second the drastic difference between the school in the 60’s to what he first walked into 20 years later. That being said, he had such a profound impact on all of those kids. No he could never get the school back to the way it was in the 60’s, but he got it back to a safe and United school and found a happy medium.

Interesting, ALL the teachers that were outside of the NEA that were ask and or begged to come to the schools that made a different in peoples lives the NEA kicked them out. that's a fact. Mr. Clark, Coach Carter, Escalante, Pat Conroy (Movie 1973 , Conrack) and the list go's on. Even the top educator in High school who won many awards for education in New York upon retirement cussed the NEA out.

"I want every door in this school _chained_ and _locked!_ _All_ of 'em!" This part I wonder about. I mean I understand there isn't room in the budget to put an _alarm_ on every door, but how tricky would it be, I wonder, to put a _security_ officer at every door? And I don't mean an _armed_ officer, by any means. Just someone to keep an _eye_ on it.

I am so glad that you have watched this- I don't think any other reaction channels I watch have done this, and I think it's a movie that invites a lot of thought and a consideration. I can remember seeing the real Joe Clark in the news and there was a lot of debate about if his methods were worth the results. I can ALSO remember seeing Riff live, the singing group that was the boys in the bathroom who did the acapella version of the school song! They were great- this was 1989 (man, I'm old).
