LEAN BITES: Pulling the Andon Cord-a key to an Improvement Culture

The Andon system created by Toyota, is one of the most powerful components of Toyotas’ core principle of “ Respect for people”.
Simply it’s a flag system, through a cord that runs overhead of the assembly line.
The operator is in control of the quality related to his tasks and is empowered to raise the alarm when he observes that the quality is not to standard.
The flag is activated by pulling the cord, runs a light that the whole team can see and the Area Leader, immediately attends the call. It’s the Area Leader (familiar with all the processes) who contains and solves the problem including finding root cause, in conjunction with the Operator, in an environment where they feel psychologically and physically safe, that their concerns will be taken seriously. Complex problems can be taken off-line and discussed during the Quality Circle. The underlying principle is building problem solvers at the front line.
In this demonstration, I share my 6 tips that help build an improvement culture.
1. Create or modify a core value that respects your front line team members.
2. Create a strategy that elevates the importance of problem solving.
3. Make training and equipping your team members a priority.
4. Think problem solving. Integrate this thinking into every possible system.
5. Celebrate the wins. Communicate the good work being done.
6. Give it time. Your approach must be consistent. Stick with it.
I’m sure this will help you on your journey of creating a great improvement culture.
