Had a plumber out to change the valve for a modern one, they didn't want to change the tail and told me to get a 3/4" valve. Packed it out and stopped the leak. Nice one.

When I try this water keeps leaking and coming out, do I need to turn the water off ?

You need to close the valve first, if water is coming out still you might just have to change the whole valve

No, the heating system is separate to the mains water. If you will unscrew the valve you will need to drain the system first. But what I did is a quick repair everything is live
