More from my Slow Travel Adventures!
This time we saw a lot in one day in Drogheda.
I had no idea what to expect. Newgrange was one of the coolest places I've ever been!
It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's the inside that's incredible. Unfortunately, they don't allow cameras of any kind inside for preservation reasons.
There are many photos online though. The best part was when they did a mini-reenactment for us of what it looks like during Winter Solstice when the sun rays come in through that little opening above the door.
What's really amazing is the way they build it inside. The chamber to get to the middle is very narrow and goes up a hill.
You have to duck and walk sideways in places if you are a wide or tall person - not nice if you have claustrophobia!
But when you get to the middle, it's a very small circular dome. And once a year, for only a few minutes, the sun shines right inside, up the hill to the center of the dome.
So for that reason, and because, there were definitely human remains found, they believe these original people who built Newgrange were most likely sun-worshippers. Really fascinating stuff!
Hill of Tara was a little underwhelming if you don't have much info going into it. I wish we had read up on it a little more than we did before we arrived, however, a lady at the welcome desk gave us some great information that made spending time at the site more meaningful. Lots of tales and stores about Saint Patrick stirring the pot with ancient pagan kings!
And finally, Duleek - one of the original stone churches in Ireland. Just cool to say you've seen it in person!
I hope you enjoyed the home footage, and there's more coming!
