Leaders Are Born To Be Made | Bryan Deptula | TEDxNSU

Leaders can be made through events in their life that pull out the leader from within, and trigger changes in how they see themselves in relation to others. In this talk, Bryan Deptula reveals how the pillars of leader development-identity, intellect, and instances - can be applied to transform today’s worker into tomorrow’s leader, and make generations of great leaders. Dr. Bryan J. Deptula is an Assistant Professor of Leadership at Nova Southeastern University and co-founder of BKD Leaders; a training firm that transforms today’s worker into tomorrow’s leader. As an executive, he became fascinated with discovering the best ways to develop leaders that make organizations grow. Recognizing his life’s mission was to help others become leaders, he left industry behind to get an M.B.A. in management and a Ph.D. in leadership. He capitalizes on years of industry experience, his own research, and knowledge of leadership to close the gap on leading millennials and executives’ critical, creative, and strategic thinking. Deptula believes that the most important people in our lives are those who see within us that which we cannot see ourselves, for these people give us the courage and confidence to live into the best version of ourselves that we can be. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Good evening all, this is Indira Cardenas. Through this video I learned the three pillars of leadership development and how they relate to leadership. According to the speaker, the three pillars of leadership development are identity, intellect and doing. Identity refers to how we see ourselves as leaders. For instance, it refers to whether we believe we have the capacity to lead a group of people or not. Intellect refers to the knowledge and information we have stored from previous experiences of how leaders lead people. Doing refers to actually leading a group of people and tacking actions that empower them as individuals.

Comments by Suyen Leon 1. This was a great session led by Professor Deptula on leadership.. are you born with it or can it be taught/developed. As he mentioned, I feel some people may have characteristics of a leader built into their DNA but still need to learn to cultivate leadership qualities that engage and promote growth in others. The three pillars described are: BEING- leader identity; how we see ourselves as leaders KNOWING - intellect; what we know and how we think about leading DOING - instances where we practice being a leader worth following 2. General McChrystal’s talk is spot on with our chapter. I found that he demonstrated leadership even in the most routine activities. I picked out intellectual empathy, intellectual courage and intellectual perseverance. His awareness and empathy when dealing with others show the General is connected to the fact that leadership is about doing the work in order for your team to follow with conviction. In his example, he mentioned looking at other paratroopers doing exactly what he’d trained them to do and in that moment he realized if they had to go to combat and they came back alive it’d be due to his training. He also demonstrated immense courage during the 9/11 crisis as his leadership skills were tested beyond precious scope. Though his military training had prepared him for this and more, courageous leadership served to challenge the status quo. 3. There are stricking similarities between General McChrystal’s military experiences and the three pillars of being, knowing and doing. These seem to have guided him throughout his experiences whether he was facing one of the most hurtful days our country has experienced militarily or leading young tech saavy soldiers. He relied on his core leadership training and new that failing at leadership could be potential catastrophic. I appreciate him sharing that “leaders can let you fail but not feel like a failure”. It’s a balance we face daily to avoid demotivating our teams.

I have watched Dr. Deptula give this presentation multiple times. I am touched at Dr. Deptula's passion for creating leaders and love his passion for the subject. I am a student in one of Dr. Deptula's classes, and always enjoy his enthusiasm, passion and honesty. I have grown as a leader due to the way he has enriched my life and caused me to think differently. I have had a few mentors in my life but Dr. Deptula's desire to build others is evident and makes me want to be better each day. I always take notes from his video messages so that I can recall his key points and agree with his views that anyone can be a leader although some persons have traits that help them to the path of leadership such as extroversion, proactive personalities, a willingness to challenge conventional wisdom, and a willing to break a few rules. In the Meyers-Briggs world, I am a ISTJ and sometimes I have to work harder to overcome my introversion, but Dr. Deptula has helped me understand that I can lead despite lacking the extroversion trait. I love the three pillars of Leader Development that Dr. Deptula referenced: Being, Knowing and Doing. Dr. Deptula, I can't express how much I appreciate your attitude and have three additional classes to take before graduation and hope to attend a few more of your classes at NSU!

This is a great perspective for how to become a great leader. The three Pillars of Leader Development as described by Dr. Deptula are Being, Knowing, and Doing. Being is described as our identity and how we view ourselves as leaders. Knowing is what we know and think about leading. Lastly, Doing is the actual practice and our experiences that come with our leadership roles. By following the 3 pillars of leader development described by Dr. Deptula, you can easily develop as a leader by learning your strengths and weaknesses.

After watching the video, I agree that leaders are born to be made. Nobody has it all from birth. Leaders are the results of the followers’ willingness to give the leader the necessary powers to lead. However, leadership development requires three pillars to be a true leader: being, knowing, and doing. The being aspect of leadership starts with the mental model one develops to lead. Being a leader is not sufficient without knowing, which relates to an individual’s intellect about leadership. Indeed, a leader may develop the mental model and know what is being developed as a leader, but the leader must also practice leadership through doing. The followers must be convinced that following the leader worth the time and efforts.

I learned from this video that leaders don’t follow, they lead the way and others follow. You have to want to be a leader; if it were force then it would not feel the same. You as a person decide what image and role you want to portray in life. The 3 Pillars of Leader Development are “Being” leader identity how we see our self as a leader, “Knowing” intellect what we know and what we think about leading and “Doing” instances where we practice being a leader worth following. If you apply these three pillars no one cannot doubt your leadership. These factors make you the leader that you are because this is what it takes to become a leader. You have to “own” what you are. Good leaders listen and watch more than they will talk. This was a great video.

Great Speech! I highly agree with the three pillars of leadership described by Dr. Deptula in the TedxNSU talk follow as so, leadership identity, knowing and doing. Leadership identity refers to the self-awareness of one as a leader; if one does not know that they are a leader how can they effectively lead? Knowing, on the other hand, is taking what knowledge one may have an applying it to leadership. Lastly doing is the final pillar discussed in the video and refers to principal moments where a leader practices the acts of leading others.

There were three pillars that Dr. Deptula discussed in the video above. The first pillar was “being” Dr. Deptula described this as a leader’s identity and how people see themselves as a leader in their field. The second pillar was “knowing” which was what leaders know and how they think about leading others. The third pillar was “doing” which are opportunities in which a leader is able to take action and show that they are a leader which other people should follow. I can become a better leader by applying the three pillars to myself. I first need to view myself as a leader in order to be able to lead others. I need to feel as though I am a leader in my role at work so other will be willing to follow me. I can also learn more about leading others and that can help me “know” more. This will help me shape my thinking about leading others. I can apply the last pillar by displaying my leadership skills that I have learned in the workplace.

I started out as a young manager and did not view myself as a leader until later on in my career. I wish I could have seen this video many years ago! Practicing your skills as a leader is so important to be able to develop into a great leader. It is not always easy to be a leader as tough decisions need to be made and the more practice you have the better you become!

This TED Talk by Dr. Deptula is very inspiring. Being a leader doesn't necessarily refer to leading in an organization. Dr. Deptula shows us that one can be a leader in any setting. The three pillars of leadership development he mentions are Identity, Intellect and Instances. Identity, refers to how we perceive ourselves in a leadership role. Intellect speaks of our current knowledge and thoughts on being a leader. Lastly, Instances deals with times when one has to step up and be a leader by applying our understanding and skills already learned in regards to leadership. By applying these practices one can achieve to develop and ultimately transform themselves into an effective leader. Dr. Deptula is truly motivating in explaining how anyone of us can be a leader and be successful at it.

In watching Dr. Deptula’s, “Leaders are Born to be Made” video I found motivation, the kind of motivation that drives you to seek a subject and truly understand it. But it was when I watched it for the second time and truly appreciated the message being conveyed, that I found what I needed, inspiration. Understanding the three pillars of leader development; being, knowing and doing, I believe can shape me into a better leader. It is inspiring being a leader because I think that it is my identity. I am now of the mindset that the follower I am today will develop me into a good leader tomorrow, just as a child, I too can grow, I also can become the leader I was born to be made.

Dr. Deptula this is a very good inside on leadership. In our everyday life and more so as parents we often miss out on the opportunity to create next leader, because we do not see the window or ourself as leaders. If we apply the three pillars of leadership Being (leader identity), Knowing (our intellect) and Doing ( practice leading) we all can realize that leaders are born to be made and we all are leaders at some point. Identifying and enhancing this creates the next generation of leader and makes us better leaders. "Leading is something everyone can do".

I very much enjoyed listening to Professor Deptula’s speech. His 3 Pillars of Leadership Development: being-which is leader identity and how we see ourselves as leaders, knowing-our intellect, what we know and how we think about leading, doing-instances where we practice being a leader worth following. I think most people get through the first two pillars, but don’t actually practice the doing piece in real life. Maybe that is because of an internal conflict with oneself not having the self confidence that they are in fact a leader. I also learned that leadership is a growth process as it in fact starts out at a young age. Professor Deptula’s example of his son at the pumpkin patch is a great example of the growth process in real life. I feel that our experiences as we grow help shape us for the future.

The 3 pillars of leader development described by Dr. Deptula are extremely valuable. Described as following: First, this is your leader identity and how we see ourselves as leaders, Second is Knowing: This is our intellect and what we know and think about leading and last but not least,; Doing: This is where we practice being a leader worth following. Each of these pillars are crucial to not only becoming a leader but a great one. Most importantly, Doing is where you practice what you have preached. This is in my opinion the most pivotal stage where you show your capabilities and lead a team and other view you as a leader that's worth following. I couldn't agree more with Dr. Deptula and will continue to apply these traits to my everyday live and journey through leadership opportunities.

I can apply leader identity to my life by understanding my leadership style and recognizing the actions I take that make me a good leader. I can use knowing (intellect) by remaining open to learning different leadership styles and approaches from other leaders so I can use their skills to improve my own. I can use doing (instances) by being a good role model that others will be encouraged to follow. I’ll be a good role model by holding myself accountable for my actions, developing open and honest communication, and showing vision, integrity, and courage.

For over 20 years, I have always been told “leaders are born, not made” and today I understand how people are in fact formed into leaders through identifying the leadership skills we have apart from others, knowing the intellectual capacity we have and finally, “doing” or recognizing instances where we practice being a leader worth following. With these three pillars of leadership development, I plan to utilize this in my personal life to not only augment my leadership skills but also those around me who are not seeing the best version of themselves.

The three pillars of leader development are being, knowing and doing. Being is leader identity, having the capacity and intellect to envision oneself as a leader. Being able to identify with management and subordinates in situations is what assists in molding me to become a good leader along with my knowledge and ethics. Knowing is having the intellect and mastering what you need to know in your field. Doing is where we practice being a leader by influencing, uplifting and motivating others. Being a good leader is not an easy task. Applying these pillars is vital for all individuals that want to be a successful leader.

I believe all three pillars addressed effectively describe the necessary characteristics of a leader. I actually learned the importance of 'identity' - as opposed to the simple task of just calling oneself a leader, one must actually identify and envision their own self as one, while encompassing the capacity and relevant knowledge to be a leader. Dr. Deptula does a great job of describing the 3 pillars of leadership development that guide individuals to becoming great leaders. The three pillars he mentions are being, knowing, and doing. As mentioned in the video, being is our leader identity and where we see ourselves as leaders. Knowing is what we think and know about leading. Doing refers to moments where we get to practice being a leader who wants to be followed. General McChrystal references he refers to certain intellectual traits that he has come across during his army experience. One being intellectual courage. Intellectual courage refers to the ability to question how strongly one feels about one’s beliefs. The next trait General McChrystal references is intellectual empathy. This refers to having the awareness to understand the views of others. The last trait he describes in his army experience is intellectual integrity. Individuals who exert this quality hold themselves to the same standards that they would expect others to also follow. His leadership style in the military resembles the three pillars discussed by Dr. Deptula. General McChrystal mentions being as the driving force behind one’s identity in the military. He also touches on how knowing is key to survival during tough situations. Finally, he refers to doing as the final component that puts both aforementioned pillars into motion.

Manuel Cespedes As describe by Dr. Deptula in his presentation, the three pillars of Leader Development are identity, intellect, and instances. As he mentioned, identity is how you see yourself as a leader. It is not about traits or genes. If you don’t see yourself as a leader, most probably you won’t become a leader. Intellect is what you know, and what you think about leading. A leader needs to cultivate the capacity to lead and acquire the skills to become a better leader. Instances are those moments or circumstances where you put in practice all what you have learned and prove yourself as leader. In my case, I completely agree that by applying these three pillars, I will have the opportunity to become a successful leader. In fact, I already see myself as a leader, and plans to obtain insights of leadership to be able to succeed in influencing people around me and even my own family. I know that there is always an opportunity to be a leader and find yourself in those challenging situation where only good leaders can succeed. Therefore, as Dr. Deptula stated, leaders are born to be made.

Being (leader identity) - how we see ourselves as leader, 2. Knowing (intellect) - what we know and how we think about leading, and 3. Doing - instances we practice being leader worth following. Applying these three pillars make you more aware of what one thinks about the concept of leadership. It is a good way to self evaluate oneself and know how they could improve. Dr. Deptula paints a picture of how leadership is a skill that anyone acquire by focusing on the 3 Pillars of Leader Development : 1. Being - One's self-perception of being a leader 2. Knowing- What we know about leadership 3. Doing- How we apply leadership skills to become a leader worth following I enjoyed Dr. Deptula's analogies and how he related leadership to different stages in not only his career, but also in his personal life as a parent. One of my biggest take-aways from this TEDx Talk is the importance of learning the ability to view from another’s perspective- much like the berries in the bush Dr. Deptula described. Dr. Deptula and General McCrystal exhibited a common Intellectual Trait, Intellectual Empathy. Dr. Deptula demonstrated Intellectual Empathy in kneeling down to see the world from his son's point of view ( in the berries exampes) and General McCrystal when he strived to understand the young soldier who did not face the same 9/11 experience. General McCrystal also displayed his Intellectual Integrity in describing work he assigns his team stating, " I would never ask someone to do something I wouldn't do myself." This is a clear demonstration of leading by example. Lastly, the General displayed Intellectual Humility. He knew that as time and technology progresses, he may not possess the same technical skills as some of the team he leads (particularly newer generation soldiers). The General used his Intellectual Humility by building consensus amongst the group in oppose to giving orders. General McCrystal believes that being a good leader doesn't mean that they are always right but instead, a good leader is one who is willing to learn and trust. This leadership philosophy touches on all Three Pillars of Leadership Development.

This can be applied to one self by knowing exactly who we are and we we stand for and that way others will know it as well. I believe a leader needs to be open to suggestions and always learning new things if not they are not fit to lead a group of people. We always have an opportunity to practice what we have learned and pass on our knowledge. I completely agree with Dr. Deptula leaders can be made if they have correct guidance. No one should be looked down or not given the opportunity because of age, race, ethnicity, religion, or any other reason.

Great perspective, Bryan. Leaders do need followers as you stated. Followers need to know that their opinion matters, that their input is valued, and that they are appreciated. The old days of “My way or the highway” are gone. Good leaders have two ears and one mouth, and listen twice as much as they talk. The ability to have a shared vision, to share the same mission, is so very important for success. Great presentation!

According to Dr. Deptula, the 3 pillars of leader development can be defined as the following: The First Pillar is Being. This is our leader identity. It is the way that we see ourselves as a leader. The Second Pillar is Knowing. This is our intellect. It is what actually know and how we think about leading The Third Pillar is Doing- These are the instances in which we practice being a leader that is actually worth following. If you don’t see yourself as a leader, you won’t attempt to practice the things that you learn. Being a leader is a growth process that allows you to distinguish yourselves from others. I really enjoyed the way you brought these pillars to life

    1. Being (leader identity) - how we see ourselves as a leader.2) Knowing (intellect) - what we know and how we think about leading. 3) Doing - instances we practice being a leader worth following. Applying these three Essential pillars that Dr. Deptula talks about on his video, makes us more and more mindful of what one supposes about the idea of the creativity. It is a decent method to self-assess oneself and knowledge we all could improve. I do envision that in the present business world the possibility of everybody is a pioneer is an excuse. Not on the grounds that I don't believe it's actual, every story calls attention to, the business doesn't set them up, or give them the space to fall flat and develop. These 3 Pillars are basic for while being a pioneer. As a Leader, we must have the option to recognize yourselves and see what characteristics you have. It is critical to comprehend your very own insight on any circumstance. To improve as a pioneer, encounters will be the best educator. I discovered that administration is to a greater extent a developing procedure and that pioneers are destined to be made.

What an inspiring video by Professor Deptula about leadership. Some key take away are that preparation and training to become a leader will help defeat crisis and political issues. For example, the financial disaster in 2008 led many people down the wrong path, and if they knew how to be a true leader they could of overcame such catastrophe. Also, there are three pillars of leader development. One, being, which is defined as leader identity and how we see ourselves as leaders. Two, Knowing, which means our intellect, or how we think we are leading. And third, doing, which are instances where we practice being a leader worth following. With these three pillars, we as leaders can be successful professionally and personally. In quote, and my new favorite saying, “Leading is something everyone can do, I am a Leader, and so are you!” - Justin Ciccarello

Dr. Deptula, awesome video!!! This video is relevant, timeless, and very educational. I have always read and heard from other professionals that leadership is more innate than acquired. I appreciate your stance on leadership being a possibility for everyone. The example of your son leading is a great demonstration of the many levels of leadership. Oftentimes, when people hear or think about leadership; it’s on a grand scale-president, vice president, manager, director, etc. However, as you perfectly explained, leadership can be on various levels and in various capacity-not by only occupying leadership roles. In the TEDxNSU Talk, “Leaders Are Born to Be Made”, the 3 Pillars of Leader Development were: 1) Being-Leader Identity 2) Knowing-Intellect, What we know and how we think about doing, and 3) Doing-Demonstrating Exemplary Leadership, practice being a leader worth following. -S. This was a great talk, I was able to easily understand the 3 pillars described by Dr. Deptula. These include, Being, Knowing and Doing. Being is described as the act of identifying a leader, either ourselves or someone else we consider a leader. Our opinion and thoughts is referred to as knowing, how we think and most importantly what we know and think of being a leader. Last is the act of doing, being a leader and our practice and how we perform our acts of leadership. As you mentioned leadership is something a person must be willing to do and work at. It is also important to that leaders listen as this enables them to act in a manner in which is beneficial to their followers. Most important is to listen rather than to talk. This is one important characteristic of a leader.

Leadership is an important trait needed for business but also in all around life. Dr. Deptula does a great job relating the 3 pillars of leadership to business and personal. He states the 3 pillars are being, knowing, and doing these pillars help define who you are. The pillar of being refers to individuals own identity and perception of themselves as a leader. Knowing refers to ones actual capacity in the sense of knowledge and ability. Doing is an individuals ability to act and motivate through their actions. Dr. Deptula's ability to relate the topic of leadership to the average individual's daily life is what makes this so impactful.

The content discussed here by Dr. Deptula is something that all leaders should constantly be reminded of. We can be a positive influence for others by being "the rising tide [that] lifts all ships" and raise a follower into the leader that they were born to be. We have to, as individuals, be able to see ourselves as leaders and understand our own personal identity as one or we will not make the attempt to practice what we have learned. Knowing as a leader is the intellect required to be a leader, which includes how we understand the concepts, assimilate the skills and how we think about leading others. Lastly, doing, is the continuous practice to develop the skills to be a leader worth following. We can develop future generations of leaders if we can cultivate their capacity to lead and draw the leader from within to first, see themselves as leaders, absorb new skills and then grow intellectually. Once this is established they will practice over and over the qualities that we seek in a leader - allowing them to fail at times - but never letting them be a failure. As leaders we must be careful not to become intellectually arrogant, learn to put our thinking to the test and be motivated to make it better (Paul & Elder, 2012). Paul, R., & Elder, Linda. (2012). A great video that easily explains the concept of leadership. Dr.Bryan Deptula described the 3 pillars of leader development which are 1- Being:how we see ourselves as leaders, 2-Knowing:what we know and how we think about learning , Doing: instances were we practice being a leader worth following. General McChrystal discusses 3 intellectual traits which are: 1- Intellectual integrity(hold yourself to the same standards to which you hold others)he mentions that he was raised to believe soldiers were faithful, wise and brave and don't turn their backs on their comrades. 2-Intellectual Empathy(learn to enter opposing views Empathically ), McChrystal learnt to understand the age and generational difference, develop the trait of listening more, between him and the soldiers working under him and that he had to accept the changes in technology.3-Intellectual Perseverance(Refuse to give up easily): McChrystal refused to give up on him being behind in technology and learnt to communicate with his troops through emails, teleconferences etc. Being for General McChrystal: sees himself as a consistently learning and investing in himself leader that is still keeps his military and personality values and is an aware leader of what is changing around him i.e. new generations , he believes in '' shared sense'' between them. Knowing:He is very open to new learning techniques and actually learnt them. Doing: he practiced technology for an operation in order to co ordinate from multiple locations and they failed but worked to regain each others trust. 'Leaders aren't good because they are right they are good because they are willing to learn and to trust'.General Stanley McChrystal.

I really enjoyed watching the video on how Dr. Deputula discusses the 3 pillars of leadership. Dr. Deputula discusses that the 3 pillars of leadership consists of Being, which is how we see ourselves as leaders. He discusses that knowing is what we know and how we think about leading. He stated that Doing consists of practicing being a leader worth following. As I watched and listen to the video, guiding someone is what makes you a leader. Dr. Deputula discusses when people who decides to lead, makes people around them perform better and believe that they can achieve. In my profession, I sometimes act as the Court Officer during court sessions. It is my responsibility to make sure that other officers makes sure inmates are transported back and forth to court hearings. I encourage the freshman officers to always listen and be consistent in whatever task they are called upon to perform. Dr. Deputula stated in the video, if we draw out the leader within every person and culture within every organization, how much better the world would be. I'm always encouraging officers to start by making themselves a leader, so that everyone can become leaders. As I watched the video on Stanley McChrystal, intellectual traits that he described is courage, trust and need to have shared sense. McChrystal talked about the courage he endured during his parachute jump. It takes courage to be a leader, and to perform as a leader, you should always inspire others to become leaders.

When we think of leaders, I think we often think of leadership as being an ability that one either has or does not have. While I do agree that some people might have a natural propensity, leadership can be taught and learned. I think everyone can be a leader, in some capacity, if you channel your energy and focus in a certain direction. Dr Deptula's TedTalk is a good example of some basic ideas that can help individuals harness their leadership potential. In the Talk, Dr Deptula describes three different pillars of leadership. The first pillar is “being”, or having one’s own identity as a leader, self-efficacy and seeing one’s self as a leader. The second pillar is ”knowing”, or the cerebral/intellectual component- what one learns as far as theories. The last pillar is “doing”, which refers to how someone combines what they know (knowing) along with who they are (being) together in order to affect their teams and be the leader who “is worth following”. One quote that resonates from Dr. Deptula’s TedTalk is “if you don’t see yourself as a leader, you will never attempt to put what you’ve learned into practice.” As someone who has spent some time in the academic setting, I have read and learned a lot about leadership and theories. This alone is not nearly enough. It takes a certain amount of self confidence in order to put these ideas into practice. So much of leadership is about getting that “buy-in”, or emotional connection, from the people who you are leading; after all, if people are not buying-in, you really are not leading. I believe that it is the confidence that ties together the “being” and knowing” which makes a leader. On a personal note, I have never felt comfortable leading someone who did not feel confident with themselves.

Well said Professor Deptula! The three pillars of leader development are being, knowing and doing. Being is our leader identity and how we see ourselves as leaders, knowing is our intellect of what we know and how we think about leading, and doing is practicing being a leader worth following. My take away from this video is that anyone can become a leader and if we allow our thoughts to tell us otherwise, anything we have learned about leadership will not be applied. We have to believe we can be leaders to practice this quality we have learned. Leaders are born to be made, and developing leaders is a growth process that takes time and practice.

Dr Deptula- this video was inspiring to me. Your story the economic downturn that resulted in your ambition to teach, mentor and expose others to become leaders. I do think that in today’s business world the idea of everyone is a leader is a cop out. Not because I don’t think it’s true, is that as your story points out, the business doesn’t prepare them, or give them the room to fail and grow. The 3 pillars mentioned, Being- how we see ourselves, Knowing, our intellect/knowledge about leading others, and Doing the instances where we practice being that leader that is worth following. I think the first 2 feed each other and if properly fed and given room, allows the 3 to blossom. Thanks for a great Ted Talk, I’m a leader and so are you!

I've seen this video various times throughout completing my MBA at NSU and every time I am reminded of things I forget as a leader and I am inspired to change existing processes/mindsets. There are many quotes that I feel resonate with me. The first one is when he discusses age and how that impacts an individuals view of themselves as a leader. I personally became a manager at a very young age and felt very intimidated at first. I felt people would not respect me due to age and maturity level but I was wrong. Dr. Deptula speaks about the 3 pillars of leader development: (1) Being- this is our identity, (2) Knowing - this is our intelligence, and (3) Doing - what we actually do with our leader identity. Recognizing those pillars allowed me to see that my own parents had done like Dr. Deptula with his children; they raised to do things for myself and think on my own therefore creating a leader at very young age. The last quote I'd like to touch on is the one he ends with "leading is something everyone can do, I am a leader and so are you". This is such an important thought because being a great leader involves believing in yourself and believing in the development of those you lead.

Very well said! Listening to Dr. Bryan Deptulas: Leaders are born to be made Ted talk I learned about The Three Pillars of Leader Development. The Three Pillars of Leader Development described by Dr. Deptula is leader identity or being, which is how we see ourselves as leaders. The second is knowing or intellect which is what we know and what we think about leading. The third one is doing, for example when we practice being a leader worth following. Developing leaders is a growing process. Expert leaders think creatively, critically, and strategically. They coordinate and collaborate with others to get work done and create value. I can become a better leader by using these Pillars because I will picture myself as a leader and then go out into my field of work and apply it. I will apply my knowledge about my field of choice and also apply my knowledge of leading in my work. The third pillar is doing so I will practice being a leader worth following. In my opinion that is doing things other leaders didn't do so I get people motivated and excited to follow me.

1- Dr. Bryan Deptula did an amazing job in the talk. He mentions important aspects of being a good leader. The 3 pillars for leader development. These pillars are: being, knowing and doing. Being is about leader’s identity. How leaders see themselves as leaders? Knowing is intellect. What leaders know and how they think about leading? Doing talks about instance where leaders practice being a leader worth following. It got my attention that Dr. Deptula said, “I believe Leaders are born to be made.” It is not an easy task to become a successful leader, but following these pillars will give us a better idea how to become a good leader. Leaders that people can follow without doubt. 2- General McChrystal gave a good talk. I found 3 intellectual traits. These are empathy, courage and humility. General McChrystal mentions at minute 2:47 that 27 years ago a Sergeant thought him a specific way to do it. It did not make sense for him, but he engaged to do it like that. Intellectual empathy is to learn to enter opposing view empathically. Even thought it did not make sense for him, he did not try another way. Intellectual Courage: General McChrystal found out that other people was doing everything they thought others. He mentions this in minute 4:46. Intellectual courage is to develop the courage to challenge popular beliefs. He challenge others to do everything the right way. Intellectual Humility: Even thought he had a lot of experience in the field, he was humble to say that he did not know everything.. He mentions that a lot of young people have another strategies, so he was not feeling better than these young people. 3- General McChrystal put in practice the 3 pillars. It is important to understand that he was a leader. He was conscious on how to make impact in others people’s lives. He had a leader identity. It is shown from the beginning that he was another person. He took leadership role to make impact in others. He had the intellect of being a leading. It was a hard day when everything changed in this amazing country. He had to play the most important role at 9/11 when he had guide others. He practices all the knowledge he gained through his trainings. Young people could follow his examples.

This was a great speech by Dr.Deptula. When referencing the 3 Pillars of Development those include being, knowing and doing. These traits each have an individual characteristic. For example, the being pillar of development reflects on your own identity, how you perceive yourself as a leader. The knowing pillar of development reflects on your intellect and the thought process undergone on leadership itself. Finally, the last pillar of development is doing, with the new-found knowledge of leadership in your arsenal what actions will you take to help our world become a better place. While watching the video of General McChrystal, he describes a multitude of intellectual traits from the textbook which are used in his speech. These traits include intellectual humbleness, intellectual courage and intellectual perseverance. When referencing intellectual humbleness, it is when someone doesn’t claim more than what they actually know (Paul & Elder, 2014). In his youtube video this was recognized when he was coordinating a joint mission across various countries. The general had to learn new ways to help lead people over email, video teleconferencing etc… for a successful mission. The other intellectual trait displayed is intellectual courage, this means when you are able to face and address ideas, beliefs or viewpoints even when they are painful (Paul & Elder, 2014). One example of this trait was when the general referenced inversion of expertise, now being adaptable to the newest leadership techniques and technology of today. Finally, the last intellectual trait is intellectual perseverance which references not giving up in the face of complexity or frustration (Paul & Elder, 2014). This was realized when the he failed during his training mission and his company commander gave him a reassurance that everything is going to be alright. The general stated “leaders can let you fail and not let you be affected”.

I watched Dr. Deptula’s TEDx Talk video several months ago during my MGT 5630 course. However, I am watching it with a different pair of leadership lenses this time around as I am in a new management role in my career and I can relate to the examples and teachings better than before. The three pillars of leader development described by Dr. Deptula are being, knowing, and doing. Being refers to leader identity and how we see ourselves as leaders. Knowing refers to knowledge and intellect including what we know and how we think about leading. Doing is putting leadership into practice by being a leader worth following. These three pillars will continuously evolve as we grow and develop as leaders with the result hopefully being a positive impact on others by empowering them to grow as leaders as well. By applying the three pillars of leadership, I can re-assess who I am as a leader, learn additional tools to enhance my leadership skills, and be the leader I want to be and whom my team would be proud of. The process is circular as the needs of a leader will change over time as well as the challenges faced. A leader will have to take different approaches and think outside of the box to be successful. It is also important to be honest with oneself as self-awareness is the first step to determine how to become a more effective leader.

This video provided a great outline for leadership. Determining how we see ourselves as leaders (Being), how we think as leaders (Knowing), and our practice as leaders (Doing) is crucial to becoming the best leader we can be. You made a great point when mentioning that it takes followers to be a leader. An individual can assume they are a great leader as much as they want, but without a following they cannot lead. Proper leaders inspire others to follow their lead willingly, and utilize what they learn to inspire followers of their own.

These two videos have done a marvelous job at depicted various leadership skills and steps to apply to everyday life to become a leader or enhance the skills one already has as a leader. Dr. Deptula gives three pillars of development for a leader which he described as; Being (the leader identity), Knowing (what we know, our intellect), and doing (instances where we practice being a leader worth following. All points that Dr. Deptula made were valid but very insightful. One of m favorite points made in the video consisted of him stating, Anyone can be a leader, but if one does not see themselves as a leader, one will never practice their skills. This was insightful and inspiring for myself and the future changes to make to become a better leader. After watching Stanley McChrystal's video, I found many of the examples and true stories of his time in the military to be insightful and very positive when considering different intellectual traits. The traits he focused on that I was able to related to consisted of intellectual empathy, integrity, and perseverance. While many of the stories some may have found to be drawn out, he pointed out some great points with how he used many of these skills. While in the military there were times he wanted to give up but he had to persevere through and show those around him that he could still complete the job and do what was needed. Empathy there were times when others would come and speak with him about different situations and he had to recognize and understand where they were coming from from a different standpoint. Integrity was the most important because he had to treat everyone how he wanted to be treated and not act any differently regardless of the situation. Each of the pillars and what Stanley McChrystal discuss in his video all relates to being and knowing then the doing. Once one can identify with being a leader and know their own intellect; they can go forth with doing such as what McChrystal had to do.

I love the way Dr.Deptula dives into the concept of effective leadership as well as the need for proper leader development. The development process of a leader is the most vital step of in the creation of a leader because to be frank anyone can be given a leadership position but if they are not bread in the correct way to handle that position, they can easily fail. That’s why I believe that the three Pillars of Leader Development should be applicable to everyone seeking to become a leader or step up into a leadership position because it allows us to take a look inward which means personal accountability and also being mindful of our thoughts and actions.

With the first pillar listed, Identity, it is how people see themselves as leaders. The following pillar, Intellect is known as the "knowing pillar". This pillar is language people have about leadership and leading. And lastly, the third pillar, Instances is the how people put into practice the actual functions of leadership and leading a team.

Perspective is everything! I am glad you spoke about age not being a factor when it comes to leadership and that management is responsible for inspiring. I recently went through this with my previous employer where I moved up from a trainer to coordinator position and felt no push or support from management. Even though it was a step up, the lack of motivation eventually became a contributing factor to me leaving the company. My goal was to move up within the company but that is hard to do with no role models to directly follow as well as that push from leadership. It is an inspiration to know that there are leaders like you out there who inspire the youth.

The three pillars of leader development as described by Dr. Deptula are being, knowing, and doing. Being a leader is how we identify ourselves as leaders. The pillar of knowing is what we know, as well as what we think we know of what defines a leader. The last pillar of doing is when we put into action our thoughts and perception of what being a leader is. In General McCrystal’s TED talk, he implements several intellectual traits into his discussion. He speaks of intellectual integrity when he states the moment he realized that his soldiers' fate was determined by their level of training from himself, and his training as their leader made him responsible for them making it out of battles. Intellectual empathy was implied when he asks another soldier where they were in 911 and their response was “in the 6th grade”. This response reminded General McCrystal that there are very different perspectives between the variety of differences in the individuals he must lead. Intellectual courage is represented when he speaks about jumping and following the advice on the proper technique that he received prior to the jump. General McCrystal stated that he wasn’t going to test out if this technique truly worked, he was just going to listen, and do it without having full confidence. The 3 pillars of leadership apply to General McCrystal’s leadership adaptation because he realized that every day all of his soldiers looked to him to be a leader they were confident in following. He needed to prosecute his actions with his knowledge of being a leader to maintain his confidence and trust in his fellow leaders and followers.

As I watched this video, I see leadership differently now. As Dr. Deptula described the 3 pillars leadership which is, Being, our leader identity, how we see ourselves as leaders. Knowing, which is our intellect, it gives me clearer picture of what great leadership is. These are great pointers for me as I continue my role in leadership.

Dr. Deptula did a great job of sharing his views of leadership and what it takes to be a good leader. He explains the 3 pillars of leader development. Being: knowing your leader identity, knowing: having the intellect and knowledge to be able to lead, and doing: practice being the leader you want to become. I learnt that you must be open minded and transparent as a good leader to be able to see things from different aspects as the example with his son and the berries.

Thank you for an amazing and powerful video, Dr. Deptula. The quote that resonated the most with me was “The greatest gift you can give someone is to within them the leader that they cannot see for themselves.” Throughout my own journey to become a leader, my leadership potential was pointed out to me by several mentors who encouraged my growth and development and provided me with the opportunities to take on leadership roles. It is very important to identify talent and to foster growth, especially in a workplace environment. Empowering others and providing guidance and mentorship to prospective leaders gives them the support they need to be leaders of tomorrow. I think it is great advice and will pay it forward. The three pillars of leader development are being, knowing, and doing. Being is leader identity and refers to how we see ourselves as leaders. Knowing is intellect and refers to what we know and how we think about leading. Doing refers to instances where we practice being a leader worth following. I can be a better leader by applying the three pillars to myself as a leader by developing my sense of being and knowing from the knowledge gained from my school and work experiences and using these to focus on doing. I will need to work on continuously being a leader worth following and creating memorable instances for my staff to follow, as well as guiding and fostering their leadership skills.

In this video, Dr. Bryan J, Deptula describes the three pillars of Leader Development which are: being, knowing and doing. The first part which is "being" is regarding the leader identity and how we see ourselves as leaders. the second part is "knowing" which is about how we how we know what we know and how we think about leading. Finally "doing" is when we put our leadership into practicing. One of the things that got my attention in this video is how Dr. Deptula used his son as an example to show how leadership starts from early age and that parents should in fact encourage their kids to be leader from an early age. Also, Bryan said that "It takes a follower to be a leader" which is a point that I strongly agree with. Finally, as Dr. Deptula said :"Leading is something anyone can do. I am a leader, so are you !"

Great TEDx Talk, and very engaging. Dr. Deptula mentions the three pillars of Leader Development: Being, Knowing, and Doing. I agree with these pillars being instrumental in leadership as they bring about crucial aspects of the leadership relationship that are needed to be truly successful. A person must be self-aware and know how to apply what they know for their team to be successful in whatever their mission or task is. General McCrystal is an inspiring leader and a great example of the leader that I want to evolve into. He has developed multiple intellectual traits that have served him well in his career. He demonstrates Intellectual Humility in his recognition of the reverse mentoring that was needed due to the lack of some technical expertise in the upper levels of command but was widely known by those in the lower ranks. General McCrystal also mentioned the Army practice of conducting After Action Reviews to learn from mistakes. His conduct in these reviews and the action of approaching his commanding officer to even apologize for the performance during this exercise demonstrates another intellectual strat, that of Intellectual Courage. Also, General McCrystal showed Intellectual Perseverance in his ability to adapt and overcome the obstacles presented to him in the time following the 9/11 attacks. He had to be innovative and find ways to be an effective leader in a situation that he never had to be in before. He ultimately found his way and was successful. The three pillars related to General McCrystal’s leadership development in that he was self-aware in what his weaknesses and strengths are so that he could overcome the shortcomings and apply strengths. He also knew what was needed to accomplish his missions and explored different ways to achieve the mission even viewing the problems from other viewpoints and showing empathy for those he was leading. Also, he made sure that what needed to be done was being executed. He did this with real-time follow up. I really enjoyed these talks and am looking forward to more in the future.

Hi Terry - I found your post very insightful. It was interesting to read the different ITs you identified in General McCrystal’s speech and while you and I had similar IT findings, our situations differed. For example, you and I both identified Intellectual Humility. I highlighted on the General’s self-awareness in knowing what he doesn’t know and leveraging his team’s skills to build consensus in opposed to giving orders. In addition, you related his Intellectual Humility in his reverse mentoring. While our interpretations are different, I think they are both along the same lines in the sense that the General looks for opportunities and knowledge gaps to improve.

The three pillars of leader development according to Dr. Deptula’s video “Leaders Are Born To Be Made” are identity, intellect, and instances. He also referred to them as being, knowing, and doing which makes it very easy to follow. Identity is how we see ourselves as leaders. Intellect is what we know and how we think. Instances are the moment we get to practice being a leader worth following. These pillars are fundamental to not only becoming a great leader but also in your leadership path. As a leader I must be able to identify not only to others but to myself of my mission and what I stand for. I must be able to have knowledge to share with others and never stop learning. Most of all I will have many instances to show and practice what I have learned along the way.

Dr. Gupta took the opportunity to discuss the topic of how leaders are made. The pillars used to describe leaders are being or identifying yourself as being a leader. Knowing which is completely about intellectual abilities, and lastly, he mentions doing and being a servant leader at heart. Overall I learned two things from Dr. Gupta leadership is something that can be taught. While everyone may not get the idea of what being a leader is at first if you make it a goal and improve upon it can be achieved. Secondly, he took the opportunity to describe how you sometimes need to unlearn as a leader in order to learn. Using the example of his some who he was picking fruit with who was able to show him your point of view is not always correct in getting the best result. The overall great video I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This concept can be applied to everyday people who can transform to becoming the next leader in any endeavor. Exercising proper leadership pushes one to truly understand himself or herself and being will to learn and actively listen. Learning from experiences also helps to develop quality traits and attributes of a successful leader. I love the quote at the end: "Leading is something everyone can do. I found the presentation really encouraging, especially because Dr.Deptula is describing very powerful emotions, it requires a good amount of courage to recognize that one has failed as a leader and that the previous approach was not the correct path to build leaders. I see how enterprises are focusing on training teams in specific areas like sales, IT troubleshooting or customer service but managers and organizations are failing to recognize the importance of training our teams to become leaders. It is essential for employers to focus on developing leaders since doing so will benefit the employee and also the entire organization. It is important that organizations adopt the 3 pillars of leader development: Being which can help us to identify ourselves as leaders. Knowing, which relates to our intellect and our understanding of leadership. And doing which will allow us to practice to be a leader. It is also encouraging to know that if an individual does not have the genes to be a leader, they can challenge themselves to learn the specific skills that will help them to be excellent leaders. About General McChrystal's presentation, I do appreciate the fact he described behaviors that are related to intellectual traits similar to intellectual autonomy to help us to develop our own opinions about different situations without having to depend on the opinions of others. Another skill that is important to highlight is the intellectual perseverance which is essential for individuals to push forward when facing challenges, this disposition will help anybody facing challenges to refuse to give up. Also it is important to mention that intellectual humility will help us to analyze our weakness and to realize that there is always room for improvement. General McChrystal used similar skills as the ones described in the three pillars of leader development to adapted his leadership style throughout his career in the military not only acquiring the necessary experience to lead a team which is part of knowing but also applying the knowledge learned to build leaders and develop their skills which is considered the doing,

Pillar 1 is leader identity, this is how we see ourselves as leaders. Pillar 2 is that of knowledge, specifically intellect, what do we know about leading and how are we thinking during leading. Pillar 3 is the act, or doing, it is the physical practice of being a leader that is worth following. General McCrystal displays intellectual perseverance, the act of pushing through though situations and learning from them. There was a simulation battle his team took part in and sadly they lost. An evaluation was done and he was informed of all the reasons why he lost and his team failed. He took it as nothing but a great learning experience. No harsh feelings, just learning how to be better. Dr. Deptula describes in his video that it’s important people are given a chance to practice leading, allow people to fail and therefore learn and grow from their mistakes. General McCrystal displays intellectual empathy, he puts himself in other people’s shoes. During the video McCrystal states that he had many people working under him, men and woman, young and old. He understood they came from different generations and walks of life and the ultimate goal was to bring his team together. General McCrystal displays intellectual humility, the act of seeing past ignorance. McCrystal understood that he had to adapt to any and all changes demanded of him during time of warfare and peace. Adapting and being flexible he realized during a time of warfare his team would follow him and execute their duties to the absolute best of their abilities. This ties into Dr. Deptula stressing the importance of employees accepting their leaders. It is clear General McCrystal sees himself as a flexible and communicative leader, he greatly enjoys

Dr. Deptula! I enjoyed this TED talk video! I have felt the same with the feeling I failed as a leader. I feel my future self would agree with the importance of developing leaders. I want to make it my mission to help others become better leaders at my company. The 3 pillars of leader “being” (how we see our self’s), knowing (intellect), “doing” (practicing being a leader worth following). I feel personally the being has been my biggest weakness when leading a sale team before. I did not give my self the credit due. All 3 of these pillars are vital to finding a perfect balance of developing a great leader. I remember one of the first time in the business world when I became a leader. This teachable situation at first I thought my boss was just being lazy because he wanted me to take ownership, however, I realized he was developing me to strategically solve the problem.

The 3 Pillars of effective Leader Development described by Dr. Deptula are: self, knowledge, and skills. This model increases the employee productivity by allowing every person to transform into their best leader self. I learned that not everything can go your way even when you believe everything seems great. I believe these 3 pillars revolve around each other on an everyday basis. I have always believed that leaders are not people who engage in activities, but people who motivate others to become better and stronger people. Using these 3 pillars will benefit the way I look and manage things in the future.

Great talk Dr Deptula. I agree that anyone with the right effort, mindset, and guidance can become a great leader. I have heard in multiple leader seminars, that great leaders tend to be based on being extroverts, or all their different personality traits. I have to agree with you that, although that might help a person become a great leader, anyone with the right practice and mindset can become a great leader. I personally had the mindset similar to your phrase of "i'll just do it my self", until my mentor showed me, that being a leader is not doing everything by your self or being the person knowing all the details. She explained to me that being a leader meant fostering learning onto others, developing specific characteristics on people to ensure that they apply critical thinking.

What I learned in Dr. Deptula's video is that it spoke about having an awareness of the restrictions of one's knowledge and not to claim more than what you know. The video also spoke about linking with the acknowledgement that ideas that are usually dangerous are sometimes reasonably justified and that conclusions instructed in us are occasionally false. In order to see for ourselves which is which, we must not submissively accept what we have learned. The three pillars of leader development are Being - Leader Identity / How we lead, Knowing- Intellect / What we know, and Doing- Practice / Being a leader. Using the three pillars will help me become a better leader because I have an issue believing that I could lead. I am very shy and not confident at all, but learning to identify myself as a leader through experiences and pushing myself to take on projects that I am not use to will really change my life. I enjoyed the video very much.

Aside from providing valuable information, Dr. Deptula inspires his audience to continue on the journey of optimum leadership by looking into the task of developing leaders as a growth process. By stating that “Anybody can become a leader” he gives hope to those that don’t feel as confident when it comes to asserting themselves as leaders. Dr. Deptula mentions that there are 3 Pillars of Leadership Development to focus on in order to fulfill our leadership role - the pillars are: Being - how we see ourselves as leaders, Knowing - what we know and how we think about leading, and Doing - the instances where we practice being a leader worth following. On the TED talk “Listen, learn…then lead.” By General Stanley McChrystal, I was able to identify three intellectual traits that reflect on the power of leadership: intellectual humility - when McCrystal understood that he could learn new ways to lead by focusing on building trust and faith rather than just giving orders to his subordinates, intellectual empathy - when McChrystal recognized that age was meant to be a number and not a reason for undermining experience, and intellectual courage - when McCrystal pushed himself to learn the new technologies available even though he was not brought up on such. Dr. Deptula’s 3 Pillars of Leadership Development relate to what General McChrystal discussed about adapting his leadership style throughout his career in that by Being - McChrystal saw and identified himself as a leader, by Knowing - McChrystal used his background or what he knew about leadership and what his views on leadership were to incorporate and blend both into an updated way of leading, and by Doing - McChrystal using those new electronic mediums to build consensus and learn to appreciate the value of reverse mentorship.

The 3 pillars of Leader Development, being, knowing, and doing, are much more than guides to be a strong leader on an individual level. These pillars allow your leadership to extend onto others with trust and confidence. Bryan Deptula’s talk was special in a sense that it emphasized self-reflection. I believe this to be a necessary quality of any leader in development. The ability to review one’s self and actions in order to better combat future obstacles and identify weaknesses is not only important but also is the essence in how good leaders are made. In my personal and professional life, I am constantly evaluating my being (how I see myself as a leader), my knowing (what I think is required to lead) and doing (what I believe the actions of a leader should be.) By integrating these pillars into my everyday development, I am slowly progressing my leadership skills.

I really enjoyed watching this video and found it noble that Dr. Deptula would leave an executive position for such a passionate cause. The three “Pillars of Leader Development” that were described by Dr. Deptula were: Identity, Knowing, and Doing. “Identity” can be further elucidated by understanding how we see ourselves as being a leader. “Knowing” primarily revolves around the actual knowledge that we know. For instance, I am a pharmacy operations manager, my knowledge surrounds my clinical expertise about medications but also around my understanding of the regulatory standards that my pharmacy must uphold. “Doing” means how you inspire those around you to take action and want to follow your lead and inspire them. Intellectual courage was one trait that stood out from General McChrystal as he described the example of parachute jumping from a plane. This can be related in the way that it does take courage to step outside of the norm and accept that you may not know where you “land”, but its important to have the courage to do so. Intellectual perseverance also stood out as he discussed how soldiers and leaders don’t give up. They continue to strive even in the face of failure “leaders can let you fail but not become a failure”. The last trait that I felt he discussed was intellectual autonomy, as he described a young individual having to operate alone and utilize different technologies and complex technologies. You have to have the ability to do it yourself and not have your hand held the entire way. You have to be brave and walk it alone. The three pillars relate to what General McChrystal stated because he touched on all the pillars. He showed that he had his own identity in all of the experiences he has lived through and the failures that he has faced. He discussed his “knowledge” piece in that as a leader you are expected to lead people to do things that you can not do yourself. You have to be able to grow your team and lean on their expertise. Doing is how a ranger always promises to each other that if you ever need another ranger, they will be there. This trust is important to have as a leader and he does a wonderful job explaining the importance of it.

Thank you for such a great video, this was extremely helpful for me on my end. It applies very well when it comes to my career goals, especially influencing me that I can one day be the best manager that I strive to become. The video had mentioned the three pillars of development which are identity, intellect, and instances. The three pillars are easily described as the process of being a leader. Identity is how you view yourself as a leader, intellect is what we personally know about being a leader, and instances are experiences that help us learn how to become a better leader. While going through the process of earning my MBA here at NSU, I have learned a lot about leadership and communication. These are two crucial aspects that I not only bettered myself at, but I also gained more knowledge and practice within my previous classes. Now, being able to look back and reflect from previous courses, not only have I gained the knowledge on how to better my leadership and communication, but I used the three pillars as well.

"Leading is something that everyone can do" I love this quote and that is one of the takeaways I took from this video. We do have to believe in ourselves if we want to lead. The example you gave about your son seeing berries at his eye level is something I think the world tends to forget. Being a leader doesn't require a certain age, anyone can lead at any age. The three pillars you discussed were Being, Knowing and Doing. Being is connected to the identity part, Knowing is connected to our thoughts on leadership and finally Doing is connected to our execution when it comes to performing leadership acts. I can become a better leader by simply believing. Not getting worked up into believing that leaders have to attain much success before being considered a leader. You are right when you say its something we all can do. All in all a great video and teaching, we all can be leaders, we just have to choose to Lead!

Thanks for sharing Yan! I agree with you "Leading is something that everyone can do". I think often times people think the have to have certain credentials in order to be a leader. I liked how the gentleman used his son in the ted talks jus goes to show that when a parent has faith in their child, that child has no choice but to live up to those expectations!

Hey Yan! Thanks for sharing this with me! Being, Knowing and Doing who would of thought these three simple things are attributes to leader development. I've read certain leadership books that talk about leadership being an innate ability something you are born with. This video clearly says that anyone has the ability to be a leader you just have to believe! I couldn't agree more!

I thoroughly enjoyed this video as it truly reminded me of the purpose of asserting oneself as a leader. I like when you said that we need to cultivate the capacity to lead. In order to be a leader, we need to believe that we can lead and realize that being a leader is a growth process. Even past that growth process, as we gather alongside others to be leaders, we grow ourselves. Leadership can take many forms, however it must be practiced. The best leaders are “those that can call up the leader in someone who cannot see it in themselves,” that’s the kind of leader I want to be.

Thank you, Dr. Deptula, for your dedication to crafting and inspiring leaders. Throughout your talk, there were numerous concepts and statement that I will take away. The 3 Pillars of Leader Development is a big one. I never thought to look at leadership development in that way and your statement that seeing yourself as a leader first will allow you to become one was so true. As we start to ponder on these statements and concepts it is prevalent that these are much more complex than I would have imagined. I definitely believe as you do those certain characteristics are seen in leaders but as you mentioned that does not make those people leaders. Thank you again and I look forward to learning more from you in the coming semester. -Amanda

Claironide, this is an interesting and inspiring TED Talk. Being a leader doesn’t necessarily refer to leading in an organization, it can be apply to any setting. Anyone can apply the three pillars Dr. Deptula mentioned, and once that’s done, no one can doubt your leadership skills.

The three pillars of leadership development that Dr. Deptula has mentioned are Being, which is described as our leader identity or how we choose to see ourselves. Knowing is the second pillar and it can be described as our intellect and what we know about how to lead. And the third pillar is doing, which are instances of practicing being a leader worth following. What’s interesting is that these leadership models are not new. As a young leader in the military, we have a version of these pillars that are called BE, KNOW, DO. General McChrystal has named a few intellectual trait while giving a great speech during Ted Talks. One of those traits that I noticed was his display of Intellectual humility. Intellectual humility is having enough humility to realize that you do not know everything about every topic. It is also identifying your prejudices pro biases that influence your thinking. Being in the military for as long as he has, it would be relatively easy for indoctrination to take hold onto beliefs that were no longer true. Another trait that he covered using a great example from his time in service was intellectual perseverance. Intellectual perseverance is the ability to work through complex situations and experiences to the end. It is identifying effective strategies for dealing with complex issues. The last trait that I discovered while watching hi I speak was intellectual courage. Intellectual courage is the ability to question a belief even if it was learned early on. Intellectual courage is the ability to give up false beliefs if sufficient evidence was presented against them as well. These three pillars of leadership were all through General McChrystals speech as he spoke on his experiences as a junior through senior leader in the Army. Being was mentioned when the General spoke about his upbringing and the influence of his father serving in Vietnam. He believed that Soldier are strong, wise, brave and faithful. These were words he would used to describe his style of leadership through his career. Knowing was covered when the General mentioning his first battalion commander teaching him the important lesson of leaders letting you fail, but not letting you be a failure. Another example that he discussed the complexity of communication challenges in this new era of warfare. There were strewn about in many different countries communicating digitally and coordinating military strategies. Doing was exemplified when the 45 year old General “jumped” into theatre with the junior soldiers. The General lead the operations and participated in missions with a variety of outfits during his years in command. Mentioning within his speech that faithfulness and trust is what drove him to victory.

Excellent speech, puts real life into prospective on leadership. How things can change from one day to another and the way to continue being a leader. I live by the philosophy that "you lead by example" and Dr. Deptula did a great job at explaining leadership through real life examples.

This video was very insightful in becoming the best possible leader, especially in the work environment. There are three pillars of leader development - 1) being, which is leader identity and how we see ourselves as leaders, 2) knowing, which is our intellect and what we know and think about leading, and 3) doing, which are the instances that we practice being a leader. In my current position of lead technologist, I can begin to apply these three pillars to my current job by understanding how I see myself as a leader, continuing to gain knowledge through my courses in school, mentors, and experience to increase what I know abut leadership, and taking advantage of opportunities to practice being a leader when they arise. Without these three pillars guiding us, it is difficult to grow as a leader. The goal for me is to develop the best skills possible to make myself the best leader possible, not only to advance my own career but to help advance those around me in the healthcare environment where I work, which will lead to the best possible patient care. Hi, Nisha. Thank you so much for sharing this video with me. As a mother, I can definitely relate to the importance of guiding our children to being a leader and knowing when to learn from their followers. Although I personally never found interest in being a leader in my work environment, I still find that those situations arise where its important to have the skills of a leader in order to assist my co workers. This video is one I will share with my daughter! Thank you!

as I consider assignment, I have come to understand in a more meaningful way, what a leaders traits are and how to develop others into becoming leaders. As watching the Ted Talk video by Dr. Deptula has sparked my curiosity about becoming a better leader myself. Dr. Deptula, goes into depth about his mission he’s embarked on to transform lives of people into tomorrow leaders. There are three pillars of leadership that Dr. Deptula goes into detail about. Let’s consider the first pillar which is “Being”. We understands as a leader you must know who you are, to effectively execute the role; which ties into your confident to effectively walk it out. In order to be an effective leader one must believe they’ve already posse what they need on the inside of them to be who they are as an effective leader. The second trait would be knowing! A good leader is forever growing and expanding in it their capacity to evolve. It’s extremely pivotal for a leader to possess a hunger and passion about themselves as leader. One of the second traits would be “Knowing”. One must take time to develop their skills, increase knowledge into what they’re doing to effectively execute their role as leaders. As leader you can’t bring your team or subordinates somewhere you haven’t been. Which brings me to the final pillar “Doing”. A leader must effectively live by example of what leadership exemplifies. Dr Deptula has dedicated his life on doing what leaders do, that’s develop others into being the best version of themselves. I look forward to this semester summer 2019 ~ Maslande Frederic

This is such a nurturing and inspiring video! It is so refreshing to listen a different perspective on how one can be a leader and how developing leaders is a growth process in comparison to what we hear and see in our daily basis on the work force. In many companies, job opportunities or industries the space and opportunity to be a leader is very slim, but this video gave me the hope and motivation to realize that the key for that is in within each one of us to be a leader not waiting to be called one. The 3 pillars of leader development that Dr. Deptula mentions in this video are: identity, intellect and instances. This is summarized on how we see ourselves as leaders, what we know and what we think and do. Identity is how we see ourselves as a leader (identity shock). Intellect, represents how we think and what we know about leading, if you don’t see yourself as a leader one will never be one. As Dr. Deptula mentions expert’s leaders think creatively and critically and leaders want to create value. Instances are the moments in which the leader practices to be one. As mentioned in the video being a leader is not just only something they do is who they are. I truly believe that after analyzing and understanding this 3 pillars the chances for me to be a leader have risen drastically, it definitely is a growth process, but under this concepts it is more tangible and possible to start on trusting that one is a leader and that it happens in the moment that we don’t see them coming, that is so true! General MyChrystal by sharing his personal experience and giving us real life examples was able to reflect various intellectual traits. Personally I believe that throughout all the examples that General MyChrystal mention during his ted talk always had something to do with intellectual empathy. When he mentions that leaders can let you fail without being a failure, or through the example of one of his team mates, that his son was in the middle of a fire and he was watching but couldn’t do anything, and him listening or even asking where his son was and putting himself in that position or trying to feel and understand what his friend was going through in that instant moment he demonstrated intellectual empathy. While he explains different situations while he was part of a mission in Afghanistan intellectual integrity was a key factor. He mentions that troops have a trust and faith among themselves and they all share this idea of “I’ll never leave a falling combat, if you need me I’m coming”. This is a clear example of how they were true to each other and had the same expectation from one an other. He also mentioned were they had failed a mission, and he had to reach our to rebuild their confidence not only in them but in himself through complex times and situations in which hope was far away but they had to do the impossible to rebuild it and achieve their goals. This is a perfect example of having the trait of intellectual perseverance, by not giving up and work their way through very hard situation and standing strong. This is clearly said when he concludes saying “The people you’ve counted on will help you out. The people who count on you need you on your feet”. The 3 pillars of leader development identity, intellect and instances relate perfectly to what General McChrystal discusses on his ted talk. He had a clear understanding of his identity and who he was, what his purpose was and he knew he was a leader because of being part of the Army. With knowledge, practice and all those tools given in the army he was able through that to strengthen his intellect and know how to lead the troops and reinforce the sense of hope and faith among the troops. All those missions, that some succeeded others failed, those were his instances to put his knowledge into practice and everything he had trained for into action to become the leader he was.

Dr. Deptula, I enjoyed watching this video and I couldn’t agree more with you, thank you for sharing. I liked how Dr. Deptula used his son to explain that idea of leaders and how to be a leader but also how to recognize others as a leader when we see them. I do believe that leading is something that everyone can do. The three Pillars of leader development that are described are being a leader which is being able to identify yourself as one, knowing such as our knowledge and how we think about leadership, and doing which is how we practice to be a leader that other will find worth following.

This a very informative Ted Talk. This goes into the 3 Pillars of Leader Development. Being, Knowing and Doing. I have never looked at leading in this manner. Being, meaning the identity of the leader. Knowing, meaning the intellect and what each person knows. Doing, meaning the moments where a person practices being a leader. I think applying these to yourself as a leader will increase the ability to think outside of the box.
