    I honestly hadn’t thought about lead tape for years, but I was struggling to produce even a slight draw with my Cobra F9 Speedback driver (9 deg). Long story short, I settled on the most upright setting (10Draw), heavy weight forward and added 6 grams of weight towards the heel. This came after testing several different configurations. Result was really surprising. I’ve gained 15-20 yards distance. More importantly, I’m not worried about OB right anymore. Sad part is that I’ve played this driver for 4 years and have just now unlocked its potential for me. Low single digit handicapper old dog learning new tricks! Thank you!

    From what i've read, over time, a drivers face thins. This will add more distance and possibly make it illegal for tournament play. My callaway x460 is bound to be illegal and I can hit it just as far as my rogue or speedzone.

    Great stuff! During the COVID lock-downs I started experimenting with my clubs. I once tried The Heavy Putter some years ago and loved it so I figured... hmmmm why not do something like that?. To give everyone a good laugh... I removed my putter grip, used some left-over rebar of small diameter I had kicking around and fit it inside the putter shaft. I epoxied it so that it doesn't rattle. My putter is now incredible!! People ask me to try it and can't believe the results! It's an old Ping putter (copper-beryllium I think) and love the look of it. Funny stuff but hey, I putt much better.

    Another element is I've heard that many tour pros will put lead tape on the toes of their clubs to help induce a fade and prevent the quick closing of the face that leads to a hook. I think it was Justin Thomas that I heard talking about this.

    Lead tape has hugely transformed the performance of my driver. With all the weights and expensive cartridges. It turns out that lead tape was what I needed. Few driving range session and few bit of lead tape. Incredible difference. I like my driver head to weigh around 204g. New drivers are often wayyyy too light and although I can swing them faster , I don’t feel where the head is at all.

    Interesting stuff, I just started out on my new driver. My old driver was (although not explicitly advertised) way more draw biased, this one wants to fade a little more, but I am also doing some swing changes that have made me straighten my path but open the face to path for reasons yet unclear. put 4g on the heel, not seeing significant change yet after hitting 16 shots on the range, but the head feels heavier, which is not unpleasant. Luckily my launch monitor is not reporting any clubhead speed drop.

    Hey AJ, Noted lead tape location has negligible impact on COG location (for irons). It also has some impact on MOI properties, and this might effect how the individual swings the club. I'm not convinced that it doesn't matter where you put the tape on irons... I'm sure you have seen the Edel wedge system - the premise there is that moving weight around has a substantial impact. Interested to know your thoughts on this.

  • @EFGMC

    @EFGMC

    2 жыл бұрын

    Don't disagree with any of that. Many wedge designs have a moving cg that gets closer to the high toe side as loft goes up, but that requires moving a good bit of weight around in the head. At a certain weight, you no doubt will see a difference, but most people aren't going to be using enough tape for that to really happen. It's also difficult to pinpoint enough tape in one spot unless you use very small strips and build them up 10 deep or more.

  • @EFGMC

    @EFGMC

    Really depends on what parts of your game are good and which need help. I think if you are consistent enough to break 100, a fitting can help. Don't know that you need an overly elaborate fitting, but a solid standard fitting looking at length, lie, loft, shaft weight, flex, grip size.

    Very useful and informative vid. Use of lead tape is a game changer for us finicky golfers. One thing I don’t believe you alluded to when placing lead tape on a driver is if you place the lead tape on the back of the head toward the heel it will promote a draw and conversely if you place it on the toe it promotes a fade. I even place lead tape out toward the toe of my putter because my right hand tends to flip the putter head closed on I pull outs as a consequence. Lead tape on the toe of my putter prevents the flipping action and my putts go straighter.

    Thanks for this video, saved it for future reference. Have you ever done a video regarding lead tape and wedges? I remember you did a video with Mr. short game, but I don’t remember the topic offhand. It may have had to do something with wedges. What would be the effect of adding lead tape two wedges? • @EFGMC

    @EFGMC

    2 жыл бұрын

    The Mr. Shortgame colab was about using a different shaft setup to change ball flight characteristics. Wedges will be much the same as irons. You have a limited amount of space to add tape to and the wedge heads are very heavy so the change in weight is going to be quite small unless you add well over 10g of tape for instance. Just add the tape to the middle portion of the head for weight. If you want to change the trajectory, bend the loft.

    Nice video, AJ. Quick question: I had regular shafts with medium size grips and 3 wraps and went to a jumbo grip with 1 wrap plus I added Arccos sensors to the butt end. What does this do the the weight of the irons? Should I have them rebalanced or counter-balanced? How does it affect my swing?

  • @EFGMC

    @EFGMC

    2 жыл бұрын

    So all the weight you are adding is on the butt end of the club so you are lightening the swing weight. Usually a jumbo grip will weigh more than midsize unless you are switching brands and construction type. Your swing weight will be lighter, but the static club weight will be heavier. This may or may not influence your swing. If you are having problems feeling where the club head is during your swing, you might want to try some lead tape on the head to see if that helps.

  • @roadtoscratchgolf3481

  • @EFGMC

    @EFGMC

    2 жыл бұрын

    Depending on the grip you probably loose 3 SWPs going into midsize. 6g of tape will balance that back out. However I wouldn't just assume you need the same SW as you had before. Even though the scale will tell you the same SW as before, you've added about 20g to the static club weight. That's a significant amount. I would start with a couple grams of tape on the head and see how your consistency is, then keep adding or taking away tape until you find the best result.

However, I’m pretty nervous about going from a 50-60gram grip to a 105gram grip and the head feeling like it’s too light. Great info. Where would I put lead tape on the Driver sole to reduce the height I get with my Drives? I am hitting 260 yds but the flight looks like it is a high Loop and the ball falls out of the sky around 250 and just bounces on a few yds. Sometimes it plugs and does not roll at all so obviously has a steep descent angle. I would prefer a lower flight parabola that give me a lot more roll out. Thanks.

  • @EFGMC

    For that I would locate the tape right up near the face on the sole. Can be a little tricky with some head designs and swings so it doesn't get peeled off. I would also make sure you know where you are making contact on the face. Anything lower on the face is going to ramp up the spin, which it sounds like might be your issue. However it could also be too little spin if it starts out high and then just falls out of the sky. Really would recommend getting on a LM to see what the spin is doing. Otherwise you might make the problem worse instead of better.

    It’s not going to make a huge difference, but adding weight to the CENTER of the back of an iron head is going to make it less forgiving. Think of it this way: the more weight you add to the center of a cavity back, the more you are turning your cavity back into a blade). For this reason, I add my lead tape around the perimeter of my iron heads (and try to keep it as evenly distributed as possible). This can be a little tricky, but it’s worth it to preserve forgiveness I think.

    @@EFGMC sure. But I add enough that it makes a difference. I play with “single length” irons, but I have the 9 through lob wedge all cut down 3 inches. (So im actually playing two length irons: one length for 4 - 8 and another for 9 - L.) When you cut off 3 inches from the shaft, you have to add so much lead tape that I think it does make a difference where you put it.

    With the woods, both. Irons is really just weight unless you are adding an extreme amount. Putters you could change the toe hang with enough weight depending on the putter shape. Maybe I do a video where we look at changing toe hang and see what happens??

    Yes, most irons, especially blade styles seem to lean towards the heel side with the CG. With the higher lofted wedges (58, 60) over the last few years you see more brands build up that toe section to move the CG out and up that direction.

The PW IS C6 so I’ll add 15 grams to get to D1.5 The 8 is D0 so I’ll add 3 grams 6i is already D1.5 And the 4 is D0.5 so I’ll add 2.25 grams. Hopefully evening out at D2 after glue up.. and I can add tape from there. Pretty much trying to put together lighter softer shafted set while I recover from a back injury. This helped. Cheers!
