SWINGWEIGHT can RUIN your clubs performance. MUST WATCH!

Спорт

If the club-fitter at your next fitting doesn’t discuss, or dismisses swingweight as not important you are in the WRONG place!
Swingweight is arguably the MOST important factor in your club spec to ensure the finished clubs time naturally to your particular swing dynamic. It times the club to your natural rhythm regardless of your playing standard and must not be overlooked. DO NOT accept a STANDARD swingweight spec, there is simply no such thing. If this is overlooked your new clubs could feel too light (a flippy feeling) or too heavy (a clunky strike), even with he correct head shaft combinations.
Some manufacturers have a tolerance of 1 swingweight point (SWP) and some club-fitters boast a tolerance of 0.5 SWP which means a club destined to be built to D2.5 is deemed acceptable if built at D2 or D3, or more if off-the-shelf. This will affect performance and the club will perform and feel very different to the one you tested on the day. If you’ve ever wondered, why seemingly identical drivers might feel difference, this is a contributing factor.
DO NOT guess your swingweight. It would be like going ALL-IN on a hand in poker without seeing the cards you're holding!

    Very interesting information. Regrettably many fitters / suppliers ignore swingweight completely. Incredibly, The big manufacturer that I've just got new irons from had no idea on what the swingweight was for the combination that I wanted of head & shaft from their fitting cart. I had to borrow the combination and get it swingweighted myself in order to specify it on the order!

    Glad you appreciate the importance of SWT as well. The problem is, it’s such a hard thing to control in a mass production environment, easier to ignore it than give it credit. Then of course you have the discrepancy between the calibration between the swingweight scales during the fitting and those in the manufacturing plant. We are very fortunate to be able to calibrate our scales on a daily basis and everything we build is in house.

    Watching this again after changing from my stiff flex 63 gram driver shaft to my 54 gram regular flex, both Graphite Design Tour AD-IZ shafts, same Callaway GBB Epic Sub Zero head. Have not yet checked the swing weights but plan to. But on my best shots with each I gained 13 yards of carry and 21.5 yards total with the lighter, regular flex shaft. Am also having a second set of the forged blade irons I use made with 77 gram Nippon Pro Zelos 7 stiff steel shafts instead of my current Royal Precision Rifle Lite 120 gram stiff shafts. The light Nippon shaft together with midsize Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 grips that are longer and thicker under the lower hand and weigh 66 grams (more than the shaft!!!) substantially changes the swing weight of the irons. If I recall correctly, the fitter said my 7 iron with the Rifle Lite shaft was D-4.5 while the 7 iron I had made with the Zelos shaft was D-0. My question to you is, in general, although individual fitting is of course best, would you recommend lighter swing weights for older senior players as swing speeds become lower?

    Great improvement. With swingweight dropping in the main the answer is yes but this is not necessarily due to head weight reducing, some of it is down to shaft weight reducing (1 swingweight point for every 10g on average)

    Great video and love the attention to detail. I have always thoughts my irons 4-PW should be the same swing weight and something I was very conscious of when ordering from TM! Should it be that all your irons are the same or should they vary/progress? Also the pure process of the shaft is something that not many do! A video on this specifically would be awesome!

  • @Precision_Golf

    @Precision_Golf

    Жыл бұрын

    The swingweight should progress slightly throughout the set (however this requires a bespoke build and does not fit into the mass manufacturing process the big brands do). Swingweight is a static measure of balance but does not take into account the shaft length progression, club speed progression nor the shaft weight progression so as a generalisation within an iron set approximately 0.2/0.3 progression each club keeps them swinging the same. The explanation is that if a 4i and 9i are statically matched but there is usually roughly 10mph club speed difference between them the two clubs create slightly different forces and by progressing the static balance it keeps them swinging in line with one another. This matches the reason that there is a weight progression through the vast majority of iron shaft sets as in order to create progressed shaft lengths and increasing club speeds the weight gets progressively lighter as you move from wedge shafts through to 3 iron shafts.

I currently game a Ping G 425 Max (7g adjustable weight) with a Ventus Blue 7x Velocore Shaft playing at 45.5 inches. I am considering moving down to the Ventus Blue 6x TR Velocore, but I want to maintain close to the same swing weight. Any advice on what needs to change here, specifically the moveable weight in the head? For additional clarity, the club is gripped with a Winn Dry-Tac Mid Size. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • @Precision_Golf

    @Precision_Golf

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Connor. A drop in 9g shaft weight will reduce swingweight by 1 point. This does not factor in balance point of the shaft. Ventus TR 6 is slighter higher balance therefore this will lighten swingweight further. My advice is to have a competent club builder assemble to your required spec, it’s a very complex balancing act of multiple factors affecting the finished spec.

    In order for clubs to feel the same to swing then swingweight should progress slightly as you move down the set (from longest to shortest iron) as the longer length and higher club speed of the longer clubs means that if statically matched (which swingweight is a static measurement) then the greater energy created from the longer and faster moving club will make them feel heavier when in motion.

    I've often wondered about the weight of a golf club, you see loads of people with heavy headed training aid clubs that supposedly help fix all manner of swing ailment yet the higher the handicap the lighter the club's generally are.

  • @Precision_Golf

    @Precision_Golf

    Generally speaking the lower the handicap the better the technique and the more weight the player can cope with but this is not necessarily always the case as it depends more on how the player develops their speed as to what weight is optimal. It is certainly not a cure all To have a heavy head weighted training aid and can create more issues that it fixes for some players - most important thing is to be able to move it at speed but being able to stay balanced and in posture at the same time.

    I've found that getting the "correct" head-weight (and therefore swing-weight) is critical to get the best performance from any shaft, especially on a driver. Swings are different, so finding a shaft/weight combo that loads and unloads the shaft effectively determines how far and how straight you hit your drives. I haven't found a formula. When I try a new shaft, I change the head-weight up & down to "get the feel".

    Fascinating. Keep it coming. It's all in the fine detail .. but you also need to be able to know yourself what you are feeling with your swing. I recently took my i200's with XP95R back to Ping UK (where I was fitted 5yrs ago) for a re-fit as I was aware that something did not feel right. I was re-fit into Recoil 780 stiff. What a difference. I gained 3.5mph ball speed with remarkable consistency and all straight shots. It feels effortless and I have not hit a bad shot since. Obviously the overall weight is now less but so is the swing by 1 to 2 points. I don't know if its the shaft or SW that has made the difference.

    I've been going through alot of your videos recently with much interest, I've always thought, even as a high handicaper that I have a fairly unique sense of feel when it comes to clubs as i talk about feeling things to mates and they havent got a clue what im talking about haha. I have built my set around that feeling ( with the help of a fitter initially 2 years ago to get my base ) , but im now at the stage where i feel I need "fine tuning" to get to the next stage, whether thats another re-fit or adjusting my current set. Especially as my swing has changed alot in 2 years since my iron fitting. Do you feel that this kind of shaft and club fine tuning benefits mid-high handicapers too ? I play of 16 at the moment, and play with MP20 HMB and MMC mixed set which i've loved since having them, with heavy, none ribbed shafts which i think the pro at the time said were tour spec. When i pick up anyone elses lighter clubs, they feel horrible, my down swing with lighter clubs makes me feel like im casting or coming over the top more and they give me too much freedom, so i feel i need weight in the head and stiff shaft to help me keep on plain or slightly inside. My driver especially, something i've struggled with is something id be very interested in seeing the possibilities. I'm a few hours away from you guys in Norfolk but id be very tempted to have a day down there for a full bag analysis if you felt its something that might be worthwhile ?

  • @Precision_Golf

    Absolutely - there is arguable more benefit for the higher handicap player than the elite player and it may facilitate a development in your swing that you cannot currently achieve because your existing clubs are holding you back. The flex of the shaft will affect your “feel” and what you perceive as more control than actually tightening dispersion but this is all part of it and your confidence with the clubs. We can certainly give you clarity on what the correct set up is for you and what potential benefits there could be from a change in spec.

  • @Precision_Golf

    Hi Stu Increasing headweight by 2grams increase of swingweight by approximately 1 point and decreases frequency by 1 CPM. Therefore, it only has a very minor affect on the flex of the shaft. I guess a analogy would be like pouring a cup of cold water into a hot bath, technically will make it colder but not really noticeable.

    Interesting video. One thing to add; if players want a consistent feel when swinging a set of irons , each club would have a different swingweight ; the 5 iron might be D1 , and wedges D3 , with a progression for the clubs in between. Also, have you done any testing/ a video on counterbalancing ? I had lessons in America while back where the pro suggested counterbalanced clubs helped to reduce players' tendency to release the club early

  • @Precision_Golf

    @Precision_Golf

    10 ай бұрын

    We build that way with a progression through the set. Be very careful with counter balancing - if anything if you increase hands weight what will happen is that it will INCREASE the chances of early release because you are bringing the balance point up towards the grip which means as you accelerate the handle you actually create less “lag”.

I changed my grips from medium to jumbo, I presume when I did this, my swing weight decreased quite a bit because my jumbo grips are heavier. This is probably why when I swing my driver, I cannot feel the head and I hit it all over the place. Previous to changing my grips, I had a one way miss, usually a slice, but I've greatly improved my swing mechanics but cannot reliably hit my driver. I plan on getting new clubs this season with a proper fitting, but what can I do in the meantime that'll help with my swing weight until I get my new fitting? Thanks.

    Not every player is looking for distance. As you noticed, when you get swing weight to get lighter, rotation gets faster and can help generate faster club head speed. Issue is it can also promote hooks and cause far left bias. People who already hit long and are good players may not be looking for more distance. It’s like finding the happy medium. For example, I can hit the ladies club the furthest but I lose accuracy and it feels like pool noodle thus no idea where the shot went even though it gives me the best results on certain days. I am willing to give up the extra distance to get better feeling on my shot and being more predictable. Just my 2 cents.

  • @Precision_Golf

    @Precision_Golf

    It can do but it is rare. Usually if a player swings it relatively slowly then in order to free the swing up it is a less heavy weight as the player is putting less energy through the club so a heavier weight gets stuck behind in the downswing. It may, however, require a heavier swingweight to gain control of strike at any swing speed.

    I am comfortable with D2.5 SW in all of my irons and have my preferred shape/height. Wedges i have a little higher SW with the same result. Should driver and fairway woods match SW of irons or be a little less? Cheers.

    Driver often matches the 6 iron so D2 will be close. Fairways are often slightly lighter than Driver so D1 - D2 for you potentially

    Unbeknownst to me my TSR four set up had a swing weight of C8 I’m swinging at about 115 mph and I was having issues I purchased a 975D with a stock steel shaft a little bit too windy for me but it fixed my swing I finally measured it and had a swing weight of D5.5 swing weight was everything

    Hi simon, i recently fitted myself to t150(6-pw) and t200(4&5i) w/ project x io 5.5 shafts, half inch long. Ive noticed my 6-pw strikes are more on the heel side, starts on target line and draws 10 to 15 yds. And struggling to launch 4&5 irons, its coming out low with similar carry numbers and running out 20 to 40 yds. What could be the issues? Swing weight? Lie & loft? Go back to standard length? All the above? 😂 any suggestions will be appreciated! I cant trust the fitters near me. Precision Golf definitely puts them into shame! Fyi. Im 6'1 tall, swing speed with 7i is roughly 80 to 85mph. Length+0.5", standard loft and lie. Thanks again!

    Chances are the swingweight is fairly heavy and this as well as potentially the low being a little upright could cause the heel strike. Try gripping down the shaft a cm or so and if strike improves then it is the swingweight!

    Tricky one as in principle it could be both (too light and you can flip it through not enough to hit against and too heavy and you can flip it because it gets behind you and you have to fetch the head to get to the ball) but I would try going heavier first.

    Tough one - increased head weight would help but it might need quite a lot, up to 8g/10g. Otherwise see if you can get a replacement shaft to get back to the length you were playing

    If your driver weight is D4.2, do you want to match your fairway woods?

  • @Precision_Golf

    It necessarily, due to it being teed up sometimes players can handle a slightly heavier balance in the driver or due to being a little more aggressive with the swing a marginally heavier swingweight can suit versus the fairways. Depending on shaft length of the driver that can also affect where it is relative to the fairways but they are not often heavier than the Driver

    Hi. By cutting the butt of the shaft you are removing the thickest, most stable part of the shaft, so actually you will soften the flex.

    Counter weighting the shaft will reduce swingweight but you are increasing weight to make the club feel lighter which is counter productive unless heavier total weight suits you and usually a heavier shaft will produce better results rather than just back weighting at the top of the grip

    We completely disagree if anyone says it doesn’t matter but it is only relevant to the components in build and is not absolute - ie D2 does not mean everything feels the same to swing at D2 swingweight. Knowing Ian well it would be surprising if they think that though

    I guess what I'm trying to figure out is the premise for this. It sounds like you're all your arguments are trying to get back to a neutral plane? What if the person isn't going for a neutral plane? So when you were saying what the lighter swing weight it tends to get you over the plane and these other issues where you can't slide it up and get it back on plane. Well what if someone's intention is to get under the plane and come back up or to be over the plane and come down? So instead of trying to change their swing couldn't you make the equipment optimal based on the pattern? So say someone swings an extra long club and that feels comfortable for their rhythm but then they get under the plane and come upward so couldn't you offset that with a lighter swing weight so that they could get under but then still catch it back up? Or if they're over the plane and they like to swing as hard as they can couldn't you just increase their swing weight so that they could sync up? Obviously I know what that is not quite this simple but that's the whole point of going to a fitter right? They're supposed to figure out the complex math to make these things work to follow the pattern of the person and the way they swing the club. So instead of trying to even out someone's plane what if you let them swing their swing and adjust the club to its maximum efficiency based on that pattern? Why is that not a reality?

    So at 3:29 when you're talking about this is over on this little flick move wouldn't that be the person swing? As a fitter wouldn't it be your job to fit the clubs to that person swing? Instead you say you would add more weight to get them or an optimal plane. So basically you're trying to fit them into the club and not fit the club into their swing? Something you perceive as a swing "flaw" you offset in the clubs rather than making the club's work around this person swing "flaw"? Pay for example you talk about the lighter swingweight makes you pick the club up a little more but couldn't you offset that with overall weight? Instead of just head weight?

  • @Precision_Golf

    Not at all. You are always trying to compliment what the player does with the club, however if there is a consistent pattern that someone displays that the club can make work or help to regulate turn that is what any progression in Club spec is trying to do. Not every player will be able if want to change their swing so sometimes you have to make the best of what they have. This is fitting the player and what they intend to do with their game - if the player wants to work on their swing then you can fit to that too but every player has a different pattern and this needs taking into account with the club

    So it's been a little while since this comment and I think I have a deeper understanding of equipment. So after some further thought let's say for example don't some people swing under the plane and up While others swing right on plane While others will swing over the plane and down? Also with regards to length and swing weight. Typically wouldn't a shorter Club need a heavier swing weight to create more mass and potentially more swing speed? And by contrast a longer Club if somebody wanted to swing a really long Club you could just lighten the swing weight and they could swing that club no problem. So I guess what I'm saying is I can't help but feel like somehow Fitters and the industry in general have an agenda. Instead of making people better and making the clubs work for the person they're always trying to get the person to change their technique. To illustrate this further I believe you can swing the golf club like a flail, like a hammer, like a hockey stick, like a sledgehammer upside down, like an ax etc. I think it all depends on the person and their patterns and you would make the club enhance those patterns that the person has. I think right now what it does is the exact opposite! Say for example if I come in and I want to swing the club like a flail then you would tell me well let's go with the heaviest swing weight you could do and go from there. Now once you've done that I'm not swinging it like a flail anymore I'm swinging it like a hammer. So everything my body does is going to compensate with the club's doing. Whereas if from the start you figure out maybe the heaviest overall weight I could handle and still swing this thing like a flail then I can stick with my swing and you could make the club fit to what I'm trying to do and what my intentions are. I think the entire system is broken! I think there's a reason golfers never get better and I think it's all inclusive. I think it's the teaching industry I think it's the fitting industry it's an absolute mess. And this is coming from somebody who's been trying to solve these things for many years now a little over a decade now of actual effort and research and trial and error.

  • @jacobr4558

    @jacobr4558

    So just going a little further with this flail idea! If I want to swing it like a flail and really whip the club. Then what I should be figuring out is what would be the longest Club shaft that I can swing and the most overall weight I'd be comfortable with. Then getting the swing weight as light as possible to be able to whip the club around. Once those parameters are met then I could flail the club as hard as I want but there would be enough weight to match the speed to give it mass and velocity. Then once that combination is in place that's going to match my body and what my patterns are doing. Now on the flip side of that let's say I wanted to feel the club like a hammer! Now I would dramatically shorten the club and maybe figure out an overall weight that's comfortable then a much much heavier swing weight would be needed to create the mass that's going to match the velocity. The lighter swing weight would have tremendous velocity and less Mass but then the heavier swing weight would have less velocity but more mass so they would even out. Yet the intention of the golfer in both those cases is extremely different if you're swinging a flail or a whip or if you're trying to really hammer something. I definitely don't think it's putting a person in the same box.

    Swingweight as it is thought of in the golf world is one of the most overrated concepts. Most people wouldn't see a real difference between C3, C9, D3, etc. The bigger thing though is that having the exact same swingweight through the bag is not a meaningful concept. There's no reason for it and most people would benefit from a fitting for every single club (specifically irons) b/c you likely need a different swingweight for your 9i vs. your 4i.

  • @Precision_Golf

    Hi Christopher. Respectfully, there’s no way of saying this but you are wrong. It is the difference between the correct head/shaft combination working, and not working at all. This can be said for golfers of every ability even if they cannot feel the difference they will notice a different quality of strike. We have 25 years experience of this it is the most overlooked element of a proper clubfitting. You mention that players requiring a different swingweight throughout from iron to iron and yet say it’s not important. However, you are absolutely spot on in this respect. Swingweight SHOULD progressively get heavier from Driver to LW.
