Lead pipe replacement

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to replace a lead water supply pipe with a MDPE pipe. Before doing this you need to contact the utility company that supplies you with water and get advice from them. United utilities are my supplier and they run a lead pipe replacement scheme where you replace the pipe to the boundary of your property and they connect your supply and replace their side of the water supply pipe (if it is not already plastic). There are more pictures and information about replacing a lead water pipe here

    I went in the street and found my mains and used that long tool to stop the water. Took the connector off, tap into the home, and see exactly black pipe similar shown here. Is it possible to move the pipe sideways under the concrete somehow? I think I will need to re-think where to put my units. I have imported a german kitchen which is already assembled etc. I will need to move things around unless you have some useful suggestion. Not sure I can move the pipe even if I break the concrete.

    I'm installing a new water supply with 32mm mdpe into a different location in the kitchen, under the kitchen sink, the pipework is entering through the outside wall using a insuduct housting 110mm ducting at 90 degrees just above floor level,. What are your thoughts as to puttting the philmac mdpe type stopcock 90 degrees or should I put an elbow fitting onto the incoming pipe then a short piece of mdpe then the stopcock upright? I'm thinking the upright stopcock would look neater however the horizontal way would have less fittings before being able to turn off.

  • @bobski1976

    hi there I was wondering wether you could point me in the right direction. today i attended a leak and it was actually on the philmac fitting. the stank outside was cemented over. and there was no way to shut it down so had to phone the water board to do a partial grid shutdown.

  • @bobski1976
    @bobski197611 жыл бұрын

    once i got the fitting off to see why it was leaking i found that the pipe was cut at an extreme angle so it was impossible to fit the fitting on fully home. anyway the water board guy was telling me about these lead shut down clamps you can get that basically crimps the pipe shut. this would have been ok in this scenrio as the pipe was a dead end anyway. do you know where i can scource these or even give me a link so i can see what they look like.

    Great video from back in the day. I've just started this job. Currently digging a trench About 6 metres across front garden then core drilled through three layers of brick at front of house. I've run 110mm blue flexible ducting through the underfloor of the living room and then core drilled underfloor kitchen wall. The ducting then comes up into the kitchen through another core drilled hole. Not seen the flexible ducting in any youtube video as most use 110mm soil pipe. Think I should be ok with that as United Utilities don't specify any particular ducting. By far, hardest part is digging down into rock hard clay. Getting there though....

I was under the impression it would have to have a sealant to seal that gap even though it's small. Last bit of the puzzle this. I may see if I can tape polythene around pipe either side of the the adapter then mortar round it. United utilities say plumbers sometimes use mortar but protect the pipe whilst doing so. If mine passes inspection I'll find out from inspector what he thinks it's best method and I'll let it be known. Seen a few on internet trying to get to the bottom of this. Thanks

    I accepted the situation and reversed the order of the items. I now have the 600 mm sink unit over the pipe and the dish washer to its left. My wife wanted bowl on the left as is customary in Eastern Europe. We tend to have the bowl on the right. Nothing to do with left or right handed, just custom of nations. After posting phoned a plumber who told me as my pipe was black, imperial, washer no longer made, would need a trench to get to house: blue pipe takes 2 days and would be a tricky job?

    Where the writing said at 1:15 that the trench needed to be 750mm min from the top of new pipe and floor level this just mean the pipe must be buried at least 750mm deep. Also does the insulation continue all the way to the main connection done by the water board

  • @ultimatehandyman

    @ultimatehandyman

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, the trench needs to be at least that depth, or the waterboard will refuse to approve it. The insulation just goes on the inside of the property and down into the trench, once the pipe is under the ground, it will be insulated by the earth. Thanks for the comment 👍

    Ok think I've found them. They go by the name of 110mm waste adapter or universal waste adapter. Supposed to only go down to 32mm, but if you're using 25mm MDPE then I assume it works for that too. So do you put on on the other end of the soil pipe outside? And what other options are there apart from using this grommet to seal the duct? Thanks

    +MrBestEditing If it is dripping from one of the compression nuts, you can simply nip them up in a clockwise direction using a suitable spanner and a pair of water pump pliers to hold the fitting/tap whilst you tighten the nut.

    I had the same thought. In the US, 22mm (3/4" Imperial) pipe is ran extensively thru the structure. This prevents pressure loss, which in the case of a someone using the shower, could prove painful when another fixture is used, such as a toilet in another bathroom or a washing machine, etc.

    Because we in the UK do things like they’ve always been done. It’s one of thankfully only a few things that annoy me about how we do stuff here in the UK. Even if it doesn’t make sense, we do it that way because “we’ve always done it that way” But to be more serious, mostly in the UK we store our hot and cold water in the attic (loft). So the 15mm “mains water” is used mostly in the Uk for the kitchen tap (no other tap, ONLY the kitchen tap) and to feed the ball valve on the main cold water storage tank in the loft. That cold water storage tanks feeds the rest of the taps in the house, the toilets and is also used to create the pressure to push the hot water out of the hot water tank. We’re slowly moving to instant hot water and/or pressurised water but that won’t happen overnight. Welcome to the UK :)

    @@GrahamDIY haha, you make it sound a lot more archaic than it actually is. I've lived in 5 properties over the last 25 years and only one of these didn't have a combi boiler - that was a run down terrace project in 1997 which immediately got updated. My current house is 101 years old and first went combi 18 years ago and has just had a new more efficient combi boiler installed. Maybe I just got lucky 😁

  • @ultimatehandyman

    The inserts were sold with the compression fittings. If you use a 15mm or 22mm push fit pipe and are connecting it to a compression fitting which insert do you use? Also some push fit fittings don't even require an insert on MDPE!
