Lead Belly had a man attack him on-stage with a knife and had his throat slit. The attacker missed his main artery so Lead Belly dragged him outside and proceeded to beat him half to death crippling him. He was one bad-ass genius musician. For real OG bluesman, no Lead Belly, no rock. His story is wild. In and out of prison, used to play for the warden. 1944 recording and he was old then. Born in 1888.

This is one of my favorite songs from the 40s. You should do a Skip James-Hard time killing floor blues reaction

Led Belly's skill and his 12 string guitar allowed him to make sounds most two piece groups couldnt make.

Bill Monroe has the biggest hit with this song as bluegrass in the pines

This is not the original but rather an earlier cover. The song dates back to the 1870s and while the song has been covered by numerous musicians the original author remains unknown. It’s thought to come out of the Kentucky Appalachia area but that’s just a theory.

Leadbelly... YES He was an amazing man. You might like "John Hardy". When he says "In the Pines" He's referring to a forest area in New Jersey. The pines are big and make a very imposing reception.

so cool that kurt played this and his friends songs on MTV to give them some publicity, only played a few of his own, there's another great old song called "T for Texas" by Jimmie Rogers

Nirvana unplugged MTV as previous guys said. But I've known this for 40 years and loved it only known this by Nirvana for 2. This was from the 30s when he was bought out of prison from a music collaborator(in jail for murder) and no black man got it for that then

I came here to listen to the original, Kurt called him out as one of his favorites when he did the cover. I loved Kurt's version I felt it. But the original really speaks to my soul.
