I appreciate artists who are willing to use influences from other cultures and put them on showcase for people who might not regularly be exposed to them. There's always gonna be small groups of fans who always seem to be the loudest voicing their ignorant opinions while the majority will just listen, watch and enjoy. Just gotta enjoy your own time and leave the idiots to be mad by themselves.

When people say keep kpop Korean, it's so strange. Kpop literally mixes so many genres. And with the model it actually made no sense because I think the two other models weren't even Korean either? People literally just hated on the black model for existing. I hope they know that black models exist in Korea. They were the same people who were mad when Hybe hired black models to perform on stage with BTS with their Dynamite era song that was obviously inspired by the black music scene. Literally I experience the most racism from kpop stans as a black kpop Stan, and it's so strange to acknowledge that 😩

The whole idea in general is crazy because K-pop was formed mostly from American culture, more specifically African American culture, using hip hop and R&B influences in their songs. Not to mention that many K-pop songs are written by non-Korean people. If they were to “keep K-pop Korean” K-pop would basically cease to exist, or it would be completely different from what it is today 😭

@@imani._.love08 literally 😭 there are only a few kpop songs that use Korean influence and instruments, but even then it's usually mixed with another genre still. Also choreographies are made by Western dancers, and specifically there are a lot of black choreographers that work with groups on popular choreography. Some of these people are delusional😭

Always drives me crazy those folks who say dumb stuff like "keep kpop Korean" or "kpop is more complex than American music." Like, umm....? A great deal of kpop IS American music with the exception of the fact that its being sung in Korean. There's no kpop without taking from all kinds of cultures. Hell, minus the language, most of kpop isnt "Korean" at all. And thats cool. Speaking as a Black woman, the thing that made me fall in love with kpop was the fact that you got so much inspiration from all kinds of genres and cultures. I'm 35 years old. I find just as much Britney/Christina/Nsycn pop fun in kpop as I do Janet/Boyz II Men. The coolest thing about it is the fact that its something for everyone. So to see people acting all pretentious and gate keep-y over something that literally couldnt be what it is without the joining of a countless number of different tastes and styles is equal parts sad and pathetic in my opinion. So yea, im wit you "guy in the middle". All that aside, I loved the song. Video was kinda eh but the choreo goes hard. This my new work out lmao.

the only sad part to me is that the mix between korean and english gets lost sometimes, sometimes there is barely any korean lyrics in songs now that they might as well have been english releases. the blending might not make sense either (e.g. when there is a korean line with a random english word thrown somewhere in it). it might confuse both english and korean speakers. but at least the songs are catchy

The M/v gave me art installation vibes. Kinda of a “we work in secret to create something that everyone judges us for when it comes to light” kinda thing idk. But guy in the middle is on point 100% Certain “fans” are becoming the worst thing about k-pop for me. Is the overall sound of kpop diversifying, yes. But name me a genre that doesn’t change over time? Just think there are way too many engagement farmers on the internet and hate is their go to “crop” to grow that engagement. I00% love this song. As a black man in Florida with a lot of friends from Jamaica, Trinidad, and the Bahamas - none of them have a problem with the song either.

I am 51 years old and I have to tell any (Keep Kpop Korean ) squad members.the following, you need a tour if you don't know that the majority of Kpop is straight up Hip Hop and R&B music. I have gone to Kpop concerts with my daughters and have seen NCT127 , BTS, Enhypen, Aespa , and Black Pink. Why? The reason is that they reminded me of old school R&B music. I am a huge Kpop fan because these groups , with their dance practices, amazing videos have taken me back to when we watched Hot Tracks , Video Music Box , BET and MTV (when they finally let black artistst on there lol) and the artiststs from back in the day gave you content and you were happy to be a fan. I pay my well earned money to watch stellar performances , not to hear mumble rap and foolishness. Jungkook's Golden is an R&B record. The fact that he asked one of his idols Usher to take part in Standing Next to you says it all , Now all of that being said, R&B fans in the states are in a super drought and yes Kpop groups picked up the baton and have made amazing music , and content that makes alot of us happy. Groups over hear need to step up their game and revisit the old formula if they want to succeed. Like the old saying goes "If it ain't broke don't fix it. Go back to producing content for your fans, show them your process and trust the R&B game here can go back to being fierce. The only one I've honestly seen give me old school style content from the States has been Beyonce. Other than that everyone else I just watch on You Tube. In conclusion make no mistake about Hip Hop and R&B is the blueprint for Kpop , point , blank, period.

i feel this is when twitter influences bias and ppl stop thinking for themselves. Firstly enunciation is used in ALL music. Ariana does it, Sza does it, Drake does it, 21 pilots does it. If all these songs had every syllable pronounced pop music would sound like ass. That only really works for more techno esque songs like (discord living tombstone) If they were sat here singing 'SmartER Baby SmartER 🤓' the song wouldnt work. A side note on the people upset with their sets asking why they have black influences the studios they've been using are owned by a black man who the producer is in collab with. The accusation on twitter about this sounding like water have hurt my brain bc not only do they sound nothing alike but also anyone who listens to this genre frequently knows water takes a lot from songs before it and sound similar.

People are probably going to kill me in the comments but I feel that this issue is something very American? because in Latin America and the Caribbean we did not react that way when they made reggeton, the vast majority of us loved it because we felt super represented even if they are not Latinas, seeing that our music influences people in Korea feels great. I think that because I am not from the United States, I will never truly understand these types of comments. And another thing is that this song doesn't sound like water to me, it has the same vibe but people saying it's a copy? I don't understand, besides that this type of music is heard a lot in the Caribbean and Latin America, many reggaetoneros (reggaeton singers) have this type of sound so it didn't seem strange to me that they did something like that because they already have 2 songs that are super inspired by music from this side.

The issue is with the people who will bop to this song and then in the next breath, try to gatekeep kpop or say anti-black things about the model who was promoting Le Sserafim's clothing line. In other words: cultural exchange and sharing of music genres: good. Hypocrisy and anti-black racism: bad.

"SmartER" would be really tough for them to pronounce consistently without a lot of work, when "smatuh" rolls off and is easy for them. Does it overlap and maybe they like that it did? Sure, possibly, idk. "Keep kpop korean" is crap anyways and tbh i dont even think those people should be acknowledged. Its so ignorant to the point of dismissal out of hand. @katiaferreira4370 Sorry but I (politely) disagree. They've based this on afrobeats/amapiano music so I don't think it's a reach to say they're imitating accents typically used in afrobeats. And yes, people can be too sensitive about certain topics but you have to keep in mind that this song was released days after they had a black woman model their merch and receive racist comments. And then sparked the return of "keep kpop korean". I know that has nothing to do with Le sserafim personally but it's makes no sense for people to be racist against black people and their culture to only have the same people praise a group that's using hip-hop, afrobeats/amapiano, wearing traditional Egyptian outfits during Smart performance that's reminiscent of Tyla, and doing dance moves similar to Bacardi (a South African dance). If anything, this comeback has shown me how popular black culture really is and that people want to profit from it. The songs that Smart are being compared to are simply from similar/same genres, which isn't a problem, the auto-tune was a deliberate creative decision on the producers' part which is a matter of personal preference, and most people like the "smart attire," which is also a matter of personal preference. So, although we are all free to have our opinions on the song and mv, all of this just seems like pointless and petty nitpicking of non-issues in a desperate attempt to find flaws.
