Le Belvédère - Maurice Ravel's house in Montfort-L'Amaury

Музыка

In 2003, I visited "Le Belvédère", Maurice Ravel's house in Montfort-L'Amaury near Paris. In 2017, the museum was temporarily closed, and I decided to share the video I had recorded. I can be heard playing a few snippets of Ravel's music on his Erard piano, however the background music is Ravel's Piano Concerto in G (2nd movement) by Samson François and the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire directed by André Cluytens.

Thank you for this. So much better than a BBC Radio 3 video I saw the other day, with someone handling objects and giving her own interpretations of the house. Prefer your way of just showing the house, with no commentary, just the music. I did read that the house was re-opened, in 2018.

Really, Louis?? Belvedere is closed to the public now?? What a shame. I got to visit it on a grateful day in 2002, on a day it was normally closed (a Monday) but the tourism-office in Paris spoke to the museum guide-proprietress and told her that a pianist on tour (with "A Chorus Line", then in Basil) could only be in Paris for one day and would she be willing to open it for me? The woman picked me up at the train station in M.-L'A., drove me to Belvedere, let me play the piano and showed me around, and even took me to lunch at the cafe on the town square that Ravel apparently went to often. What Ravel piece are you playing? It's lovely, and well-played. And "thanks for the memories."

I read that renowned conductor Charles Dutoit and pianist Martha Argerich were visiting the Belvédère last January, when they were kicked out by the police. Claude Moreau, the very nice lady who had guided us through the museum (and probably the same who had guided you) was fired the same day, and the museum was closed. I have no idea why this happened. If you are interested, there is an article on the subject at www.theguardian.com/music/2017/feb/06/closure-ravel-museum-le-belvedere-montfort-lamaury-france-music In the video, I can be heard sight-reading "Oiseaux Tristes" and then playing the beginnings of "Pavane pour une Infante défunte" and "Alborado del gracioso". If I had known I would be allowed to play Ravel's piano, I would have brought my own scores!

I'm frankly devastated to learn today that it has been closed. Mme Claude was also my guide.. she was so generous and warm. Playing his piano was something I'll never forget. Very nice "sad birds" and Alborado as well, Sir. But that melody from the concerto.. stop, my heart now, lest it burst..

And isnt the first one the haunting second second section of the piano concerto in G? It's a seemingly endless melody that partially recapitulates once in the orchestra and is done
