    I made exactly the same mistake this year. I thought it was an assembly error, so I disassembled and assembled the set 3 times. Now everything makes sense, thanks Mike!

    Others comment that you should not touch these sheets at all, of if you do with lint free dry gloves .

    Wow - I never knew that! I once cleaned a CRT monitor screen with a proper monitor screen cleaner which took all the A/R coating off! I got compensation from the screen cleaner manufacturer for that one!

    me neither but I have noticed sets left in the rain seemed to have a stain in the screen but always put this down to condensation until a friend brought this to my attention.

    Well...... I've genuinely learnt something new today! I have a set where someone has left fingerprints on the inside of the screen pack? sandwich? whatever you might call them. I had it in mind to try cleaning them - but not anymore!

    if you have a fingerprint behind the glass someone has already had it out to replace the backlights , I would think a dry non abrasive cloth would be ok , I know the back of the LCD panel is coated with a plastic sheet and I have cleaned one of these without any ill effect .

    I have had this problem before with a set that was left outside in the rain, it only affects the one layer. No idea what the coating is, but any liquid destroys it, luckily I had a larger scrap set, just cut down the plastic layer with a pair of scissors & the set was fixed 😁

    seems right and I have noticed the longer its exposed to a liquid the more the coating disappears.

    Reminds me a bit of when I worked as a teenager back in the 90s assembling battery operated Miners Lamps. I remember that you could not touch the reflector unit with your bare fingers as the sweat/moisture would distort the reflective coating thus ruining it.

    Im guessing you were advised then not to touch the reflector but with LCD TV I have never seen it mentioned in any service manuals not to touch these parts.

    Hi Michael. I have a Hitachi 50HK6100UB tv only a couple of years old not much use that suddenly the screen disappeared. Sound still works. There’s a thin horizontal strip across the top you can see when Netflix boots up then after a few minutes there white cloud blobs appearing and the screen slowly goes a bluey white. I’ve since bought a replacement tv but would be good to get use out of it rather than going to a landfill. Any tips or thoughts please?

    For some manufactures like samsung and vestel these parts are available from £12-£25 each but the cost of delivery on top makes this not economical

    I need to research this on the net and see what's its all about then , the other day I fitted a new backlight in a Sony set and a white sticker stuck to the back of the screen seems to reference these sheets , not just sure why anyone would need to know this or what it means this but it says . OPT sheet Top > PC,PEN OPT sheet MID >PET OPT sheet BTM >PET LGP >PMMA Reflective sheet >PET

    @@michaeldranfield7140 BEF or (Brightness Enhancement Film) distributes the backlighting to various angles depending on how its fitted, these have a moisture sensitive coating and should only be handled when wearing cotton gloves, the microscopic layer of the top coating is a diffusion layer and its very delicate, you must also never apply any pressure to them as this will damage the magnifying compound, some tvs/monitors have two of these to bounce the light from left to right & up to down. VA panels (Vertical Alignment) TN TFT (Twisted Thin-film Transistor) (these dont use these sheets) its done electronically. IPS (In plane switching) use 2 of them this is why the colour isnt as vivid as a VA or TFT panel. Basically theyre there to help with the limitations of an lcd panels viewing angles apart from TN screens.

    Wonder what would be the result with isopropyl if it did that with water ?

  • @electronicengineer

    @electronicengineer

    9 ай бұрын

    My unsolicited opinion wants to reach out to you and say: If you do end up trying isopropyl alcohol, make absolutely certain that the isopropyl alcohol you end up using is 99.9% "anhydrous" (sans water), as the typical, bog standard, usually found for sale in the drugstore, isopropyl alcohol is normally comprised of only around 60% isopropyl alcohol and contains approximately 40% water in it. Since Michael showed us what straight up rainwater will do, I would avoid using any liquid that contains any amount of water, no matter how small of a percentage that may be! It really occurs to me that these LCD televisions' LCD screens are simply just not made to be worked on. Good luck!
