Danielle, there is a clear lag of the "real" layoff rate since the Fed has been under-reporting layoffs, only to revise them upwards 3 months later. The most despicable Fed manipulation I've ever seen.

I’m convinced BOTS are calling me out for predicting job losses would mount. April is outpacing JANUARY! We’re pacing to 375k job cut announcements by the end of April, the worst start to a year SINCE 2009. Either these detractors are BOTS, afflicted with something for which no cure exists, or worse, so mean-spirited that they wish pain & suffering on their fellow men & women.

@@Carroblanco2000A great story was on Bloomberg yesterday about how banks are quietly having to presale high yield offerings. That’s for the lucky ones. Of course I’m sure you’re aware that the week ended April 7th saw 14 large business bankruptcies (>= $50M in liabilities), second only to the week ended May 2, 2009. It goes without saying that restructuring is accompanied by layoffs. The answer is YES it has started in VIOLENT fashion.

Big fan, your talking points make perfect sense and its nice to hear a sane, articulate explanation of the gaslighting going on this country. I will have to sign up for your newsletter, so tired of picking through the lies in the news headlines to get the truth. Gold is going up because China has been stockpiling it for 17 months straight but I also believe the average joe in the U.S. has lost all faith in the dollar as it continues to be devalued day by day while Gold and Silver has been in use for thousands of years. Costco has been selling out of gold bars online everytime they list them....that says alot. Keep the truth coming!

And I did the math and I cannot afford an average house unless I keep getting 5%+ raises every single year even if it leads to me making 3X everyone else by 70. The #s needed to maintain the middle class lifestyle have gone insane. I make alot and do nothing and can't afford anything. It is so much worse than 2007. Back then it was a surpise because prices weren't crazy, so stuff happening was a surprise. Normal people were buying normal homes then. Love this interviewer. He asks excellent questions and lets her speak. Never heard of Danielle DiMartino Booth, because I usually don't watch economy videos. However she seems VERY smart and when she mentioned that "non-discretionary CPI" thing, that immediately caught my attention because that hits the bones of the economy. How much are people spending on non-negotiable expenses...if those are going up at an unusual rate that to me is the steering wheel of the economy overall. If people are struggling to survive, there's a big problem.

Retail sales up - is that by value or volume or both? If it is just value but volumes are low then it is inflation!

Cpi up 0.6% and retail sales up 0.7% and yes it is not adjusted for price changes. So 0.6% of it was price changes, on average.

@youtubetim3577 not really. She talks of massive layoffs. Even using her estimated figures, that makes up less than 1% of the workforce. Thats the definition of gaslighting. Most of us wont face layoffs. I agree with a lot of her interpretations, but after 2 years of singing the same tune, it feels like gaslighting.

@millsfinancialgroup have you seen the price of small and mid cap stocks the last 2 years? Most every stock in the market is red on the 5 year chart and alot are back to 2012 prices, go look at anything outside the index were its being inflated artificially and you'll see, even clean energy that was suppose to be "the future" is down to prices of 2012 like Canadian solar, jinko solar has lost everything gained in 2021. Heck look at pfizer it's lost everything from covid and back to 2013 price, the market has already priced in recession that we have been in for a while. Look at staples like Verizon etc back to 2014 prices, trucking company stocks have collapsed in price by 75% or more to 2014 prices. Look at maersk its now back to price was in 2014 and is down 75% in the last year and a half.

@youtubetim3577 you are picking the stocks that support your point. Now do the S&P 500, Nasdaq, gold, crypto. Markets are down compared to the ridiculous pricing that occurrd during the great covid scam money printing? Wow, shocking. Who could have seen that coming? But we dont measure recessions by stock prices, do we. Does it seem like we are in a recession with not enough cash circulating, or do we have too much cash sloshing around the system, which is why inflation is through the roof? Cant have it both ways.

Thank you Ms DiMartino Booth. So much valuable information and analysis means I’ll listen more than once. Also, I hope your listeners realize that unemployment stats ONLY include people who are actively seeking work. If they receive unemployment compensation, they must register within their home states and provide weekly proof of job seeking efforts. I think we all personally know people who have made little or no attempt to return to work since devastating and wrongful COVID lockdowns. In addition, laid off workers may be unable to actively seek work due to lack of jobs within their residential commuting distances. I think those people number very very high.
