Lay Out a Print Book's Pages with InDesign CC 2018
Ғылым және технология
This tutorial shows you how to create and lay out the pages of a print book by using Adobe's InDesign Creative Cloud 2018. The following operations are included while laying out the pages for an edition of Franz Kafka's novella 'The Metamorphosis':
1. File set-up: trim sizes, units, facing pages, number of pages, margins, bleed.
2. Import text: using Autoflow to import entire Word file in seconds.
3. Paragraph Styles: how to set up time-saving styles for text, edit existing styles, create new paragraph styles.
4. Delete unwanted pages.
5. Automatic page numbering using Master Pages, including the handy trick of using Shift+Alt to duplicate a text box with the automatic numbering, as well as guides and rulers.
6. More uses for Master Pages: how to add headers at the top of pages.
7. Insert pages: how to add six preliminary pages.
8. How to number pages using regular numbers for the main pages and roman numerals for the prelim pages.
9. Create a New Master Page: the B-Master allows for pages to have numbering but no headers for chapter opening pages by using an Override function, then drag and drop for easy application.
10. Using the 'None' Master Page to have some prelim pages with no page numbering or headers.
Overall result: save yourself $10 or so per page on typesetting fees!

Realy good video :)
Love these videos, they have helped me tremendously! I am curious why you use the paragraph marks instead of the space before and after functions? Thank you for posting these!

Hi George, if you have a look at most novels or non-fiction books, you will see that they don't normally use extra space before or after their paragraphs of body text. (That's something Microsoft Word automatically adds, so you might be used to that.) The big exceptions are often instructional manuals and informational books such as travel guides or recipe books. That said, the space before and after functions can be very useful beyond the body text of a book. It will depend on the look you are aiming for.
Thank you so much!, It helped me a lot. Like & subscribe♥️
It was really helping sir, Thank you!
This will change my buisseness
The text doesn't continues in all the pages when placed on one page
it has been a year since you put this up and its still very relevant today! thank you! ... Can you please do a video on how to combine your final indesign book cover and final indesign book layout (that are done and saved separately) together for a full printable pdf? Do you import the book cover into the layout before saving? but then the book cover faces backwards while the book layout is forward... confused! thank you!

The cover file and pages file are sent to the printing company as two separate files for two separate print jobs. The pages are printed on paper and the cover is printed on card. Then the printer puts glue down the spine of the pages and presses the pages 'block' into the middle of the cover.
Great Video. However, is there any way Indesign helps you to create a book that can be binded in the middle? That meaning that the you could not actually use the method used above to import the text because the pages have to be diagramed in disorder in order for you to read it in order as you open it. Do I explain myself well? If you use a horizontal format with two columns in first page you'll have to put the text for the first page at the left column and the text for the Last page on the right column. Is there a way that Indesign helps you to make this work more efficiently? Thanks for the help

The Left-Right arrangement of the facing pages option as shown in this video is all you need when setting up a book for perfect binding at a printing company. That's what I think you mean by being bound in the middle - the book has a spine that is glued into the cover (and the cover itself is a separate PDF file). The printing company then sorts out the complicated ordering of pages so they appear in the right order in the final book. Hope that makes sense : )
pdf file for printing should contain PAGES or SPREADS? thanks alot!

Hi Pati, the final PDF appears as one page after the other down the screen, but as long as you chose FACING PAGES when you first set up the file (see the first part of the video), then the final PDF file will be printed as double-page spreads by the printing company.
how do you get all those custom details? Mine will only let me change my width and hight, thanks

Hi Finn, do you mean that the initial set-up page for a Print document in InDesign CC2018 is only showing you the options of height and width? That is, there are no number of pages, number of columns, margins, etc?
