Lawnmower service - Step by step / Including carburetor cleaning (HONDA)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Step by step how to service a standard 4-stroke petrol lawnmower, in this case a HONDA IZY. Save £££ and DIY.
STEP 1: REPLACE OIL - 1:02
STEP 2: REPLACE SPARK PLUG - 3.56
STEP 3: CARBURETOR SERVICE (If you are happy with how you mower is running and don't feel this is necessary, skip this step) The carburettor can become dirty on the outside and old petrol or sediments can also block up the inside. Cleaning the carburetor can cure hunting/ surging and starting issues. If you're confident carrying out this step, it's worth taking the extra time as a preventative maintenance measure.
STEP 4: REPLACE AIR FILTER - 12:55
STEP 5: SHARPEN THE BLADE - 13:11
AND YOU'RE DONE!
Servicing should be carried out as per the manufacturers' recommendations.
This service KIT: ebay.us/XbcL2C
Carb Cleaner: ebay.us/Naitad
SAFETY: Disconnect spark plug when working in and around the engine, especially on the blade. Wear the correct PPE, old engine oil is carcinogenic (causes cancer).

Just wanted to come on here to say a huge thank you for your excellent video. Your very clear instructions allowed me to strip down and clean the carburettor on my my Al-Ko mower (the engine must be *very* similar to the Honda) and restore it to working condition, when I thought all hope was lost! Your explanation and video was extremely helpful; thank you so much!

Spark plug can be cleaned and gap reset but no mention of correct gap. Air filter section very clear. Draining of warm oil was a good tip.

Never work on a mower with the plug cap fitted. As has been said here if you inadvertently move the blade it could, and has jumped into life and relieve you of your fingers. Nip up the spark plug?...you should have stopped after the fist tightening move as 1/8 - 14 turn is sufficient. You warned, rightly, that the jet is brass so to take care but then you stick a steel needle into it...

The item behind the main jet that you call the idle jet ( emulsion tube ) gets stuck . Some use an easy out to grab it . There is a hole which is near the top of the tube . It runs side to side . This goes towards the TOP when you put the tube in . I also clean the small holes with a wire and carb cleaner .

Follow up : My GCV 160 with automatic choke had debris in the carb bowl . After cleaning the entire carb , I put the emulsion tube in the opposite direction and it would not start . I reversed the tube and it runs . However , I noticed the tube does NOT have the hole that goes through the side near the top as shown in other videos . Lesson learned - be more careful in laying out the parts . There could be different tubes on some models .

Thank you :) with general use once a year would be good practice to keep it running nicely. If the fuel is drained out the carb before storage in the winter time it will likely stay cleaner for longer. Old fuel sitting in the carb for long periods of time causes the main blockages. And any dirt getting past the tank filter.

They probably say that as they’re worried about the rust forming within warranty period 😄 It’s perfectly safe just don’t spray in exhaust or inlet. Many lawnmowers have hose connection points for cleaning the deck anyway. You should always clean off the grass from a lawnmower deck after use as it’s what makes them rust badly. Whether that’s with a hose or a brush.

I don't understand why they don't fit in-line filters. Can one be fitted?

Usually there is a filter screen inside the tank to prevent dirt entering the carb. You can fit an small inline fuel filter though 👍🏼😁

It’s fine on the Honda Izy, it doesn’t have a sump drain plug so this is how you are to get the oil out or alternatively you could use a vac pump. No problem man! 👍🏼

Engines are usually very good, just make sure it’s got oil in it. The decks are prone to rust so that’s what I always look at. Then just general checks make sure self drive works things like that 👍🏼

No worries, If you’re planning to keep it for the long term it might be worth painting the underside with some black hammerite or similar and keep it clean. Hopefully that should keep the rust away 🙂 👍🏼

I keep hearing that you should never use a power washer or wash the lawnmower like that so that water doesn’t get into the engine.

It’s never been an issue for me. It’s advised not to spray directly into the exhaust or inlet. It’s worth putting a plastic bag over the air intake and plugging up the exhaust so you don’t get water in the engine.

In the GB we always screw the oil dip stick into the engine to measure the exact depth of oil.just by dipping the measure in and not screwing it down you have the depth of the thread not accounted for......otherwise not a bad vid
