I've been taking lavender capsules because I had severe anxiety following a tragedy in my family. My doctor offered me antidepressants but because I had never taken any before, I was afraid of side effects - apparently they can potentially make things worse, and I was in such a state that I thought I wouldn't survive it, if it got any worse than it was already. So I started experimenting with lemon balm and lavender, at first I was taking the largest recommended doses, but now I only take 1x capsule of lavender at night. It has really helped me.

I went through a traumatic experience several years back and one of the few things I found really helpful were essential oils! We should utilise them so much more.

Lavender is my favorite scent, I always have an essential oil roller on hand so that I can smell it when I'm having anxiety. It doesn't totally get rid of my anxiety, but it helps distract me and the scent is comforting.

That's great, sometimes the little comforts add up.

I just started taking calm aid and always used to use lavender essential oil for aromatherapy but I've been so impressed in even just a few days with how well they work. I wouldn't prefer them to be a prescription only sort of thing but it would be nice if insurance could cover them.

This is a very helpful video. Thank you so much for making it. I have one question about one of your comments in the video. You said that many people with depression have chronic low-grade inflammation. I'm not sure about for depression, but typically CRP is used to measure inflammation. Is that what is used for depression, or are there other markers (i.e. blood tests) of inflammation that are used to diagnose depression? What are the levels of CRP or the other tests that are associated with depression? Obviously I'm not asking for a diagnosis, just curious about the general case. Thanks again.

Hi Karl, yes CRP has been used to check for inflammation in depression. A CRP >3 was considered to be low grade inflammation and a CRP >1 was considered elevated in one meta analysis. This publication may be of interest to you: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3846682/

Would you considered making a video about Lemon Balm?

Yes, I will consider it. It will be difficult because there aren't many trials that look at lemon balm objectively.

My mother recently died and I began having severe anxiety and panic attacks. I went to a psychiatrist who has prescribed clonazepam during the onboarding of escitalopram. Even though my anxiety has been through the roof, and quite frankly debilitating, I'm genuinely terrified of becoming habituated to the clonazepam, so I've been researching alternatives. I've tried hydroxyzine, gabapentin, and clonidine. The clonidine, although quite sedating, works really well. I'll split a 0.1 mg tablet in half, then split it again, and it works well without too much somnolence. I'm a college professor and can't be falling asleep in the middle of a lecture. But by extension, neither can I be freaking out due to a panic attack, thinking I'm going to die at forty-four from a heart attack in the middle of class. Take it from me, grad students are a tough sell and they pick up on everything. Based on your video, I ordered silexan from Amazon and I'm excited about trying it. Without your video I wouldn't have known about it so thank you. Also, FYI . . . I really like your Audrey Hepburn painting and what appears to be a Bang and Olufsen stereo. Very nice!

This sounds very interesting. I tend to be skeptical of herbal treatments because I prefer evidence based medicines and unfortunately many suppliments are not backed by solid studies. But this sounds potentially exciting. I tried an SSRI for anxiety and mild depression but the sexual side effects were very upsetting to me, so I've been wondering about other options. Thanks for the information.

If you want evidence based medicines I don’t know why you’d take SSRIs. Half the studies done on these medications have been hidden by drug companies because they don’t look favourable. The best systemic review shows that antidepressants have a 15% benefit over placebo. Is that really worth all the side effects?
