It's very difficult to melt a large batch of ice with a hot thing. First the ice turns into water and then the water needs to evaporate, layer by layer. Every phase transition takes a lot more energy than it takes to heat a substance. (It is quite quick to bring a pot of water to a boil, but very slow to evaporate all of that water.)

With defensive investments and/or an item like Assault Vest, there are many ice types that can take a fire hit. A tanky ice type can handle a fire type without too much trouble.

It's likely water, the hydrogen bonds allow it to take much more heat before melting/boiling, so it's pretty much a heat sink. I doubt other liquids would do better, but somethings like Lithium bars can take a lot of heat as well, I believe we use them on Venus probes so that they wouldn't melt straight away. While water would make the probe explode.

You can stop the lava flow after eruption, only if its a fast flow. You can't stop the Pyroclastic Clouds or the ash (Which If you add water to ash, you get a Pompeii situation.) or the slow lava flows

That lava on the ice started melting the ice slower and slower until it appeared it wasn't melting the ice any more than the sun was, while inside that thin crust of cooling lava on the surface (darker) while the lava inside the glob is still red hot and would be hot enough to flow if the crystal was broken. Always amazing.
