Laurence Garvie - The Camp Verde Meteorite

Ғылым және технология

The VVAC welcomes Dr. Laurence Garvie (Research Professor at ASU's Center for Meteorite Studies) who gives a presentation on "Asteroids, Meteorites, and Dangers to Life on Earth". This presentation accompanies the return of the Camp Verde Meteorite, which is currently on display at the Verde Valley Archaeology Center until the end of August 2015. This meteorite is a 135 lb. remnant of the Canyon Diablo Meteor, responsible for the creation of Meteor Crater near Winslow, AZ. It was found in 1915, wrapped in a turkey feather blanket, inside the wall of an ancient Sinagua ruin, east of Camp Verde.

My Home in sw Ohio is in an impact channel cut by a large comet fragment, 12,900 years ago. Where my house is, "7 of the 8 compass points" run uphill sharply, and when you get to the main impact crater it is at the Bottom of the Earth in this location. It feels so cool to know this exists with houses and streets built all over these impact fields in a trajectory that flew a 150 meters fom my driveway. "He turned them to stone..., the fossil remains are all Vitrified, Solid Glass. They ring like a diner plate..... Full symmetry fossilization with even finger prints perfectly preserved.I know this will not sell easily but it is all true. Great spirit turned me on to the existence I see.

The presenter cannot remember the difference between a meteor, a meteorite and a meteoroid even though he puts the descriptions out front. In other words, it's very common to get these descriptors confused.

There is a hunk of what appears to be the very same material found near Ash Fork Arizona. It's pretty large, soccer ball size or so. It sits (or did a year ago) in a gas station on the east side of town. My bet is that it's more of the same meteorite. ... Very enjoyable lecture! Thank you sir!

@26:14 of the video the entire 50000 year old crater you were talking about is surrounded by white powdery dust. What you mentioned about the crater previously how it disintegrated. So your meteor is still laying all around the crater correct or incorrect?

NOT what I asked for! (But cool nonetheless!) I wished to know if there were any pictures of the "feather blanket" originally found in association with the Camp Verdi meteorite.....

The impact site for Coba is 19°31'44.24"S 21°10'49.86"E with a heading of ~248 degrees and bounced to its resting place. I believe it would have been an object with us for some time and impacted after decayed orbit.

yes, i have found the answer to my mystery concerning meteorites and their magnetism , at 1:05:58 time on this Camp Verde Video running time to 1:07:22, commenting why a meteorite is not magnetic. In my quest to discover what i do have in my collection. Now with this information,it proves to me that what i HAVE is a large collection of " Ancient Meteorites ". I live in Canada , and all across Canada ,at many institutions that study Meteorites, that i have inquired with my find, only to have them dismissed without a test, only because they were not magnetic, where a Pallisite Imilac would be magnetic. In my research i find, this is true concerning a new to Earth meteorite, But if it is an Ancient Meteorite it may not be magnetic any longer. looking forward to other material from Dr. Garvie as he shows his knowledge of his profession, talking endlessly without a script , displaying a genuine love for what he does . Thank you from, Bill in Canada. We need to talk!!!

Try a lab that serves the hydraulic mining industry. They do charge a fee for services but have the ability to determine what micro particles are, image them and test for many other characteristics. They also cut and prepare samples and slides for study. Determine oxide isotopes and Nickel, zinc, and iridium content to compare with known terrestrial levels. Submit all your results to The Bulletin.

Hi, saw a meteor fall in a region of Southern California. I was at a stop light early in the morning and saw a green object fall straight down with a very long green tail. I know it hit the ground within a few miles, because the San Gabriel Mountains would have cut off the view of the meteor if it landed behind them. There is quite a bit of open space in this region. My question is, do meteors glow a certain color by the make up of the material? I never pursued looking for it because I thought it was probably space junk because of its slow speed.

I notice when smelting different metals. They produce a different colored Flame or gas or exhaust. If it's high iron and high copper or nickel just like fireworks they change the color by changing the components of the firework

Hi , I'd like to hear the long version of your story ...and where were you , yes I'm interested , next time mark ,your position , I've used piles of rocks and lines scraped into the soil with my boot toe , , direction it seemed to come from , and dead trees , outcrops of rock , a white barked birch tree...it's like a submarines shooting a torpedo , I'm going to trianglulate , my goal is to create a very distinctive primary line , then one extra even partial observation is precise enough..go back , find it !

I'm pretty sure the shockwave in the Chelyabinsk video was from the impact and not the entrance, the timing matches up perfectly and there are tons of videos that show the shockwave coming from the impact and not the entrance.
