I can't believe the negative comments about this, true it's not a great film but the star is Lauren Bacall, a legend, show some respect. She just finished a Broadway show called Woman of the Year and for that she won her second Tony award

Bacall wasn't in Casablanca, but her husband Bogart starred in it. His leading lady was Ingrid Bergman. This movie would have worked had Bacall and Beihn switched roles.

Actually my husband collects autographs from celebrities for our HRC gala every year, Ms Bacall sent an autograph every year praising our efforts in the community. Just another side of this lady.

Given all the talent, this could have been a much better film. Unfortunately it was a rush job, rushed, in order to cash in on the 80's "slasher" film craze. Bacall, who had recently wrapped up her stage show signed onto the film, thought of it as a straight up thriller, however, she herself later would disown the film due to it's cruelty and over the top violence.

SPOILER ALERT! I read the book this film is based on- the book was great, the movie not so much. Unlike the film, in the book, the fan actually kills Sally Ross.

+David Horn I read the book, years ago. Instead of a linear narrative, it's a series of written communications, which makes it far more interesting than if it had been a straightforward, Patterson-like thriller. Shame on you for giving away the climax.

@@edwardjames50 Well, he DID warn us, but of course nobody can resist a spoiler alert. I saw the movie when it came out and read the book after, and I've mentally 'filmed' its ending in my mind. You'd think the burned body was his and it's all over, then as she's on stage you'd hear that last letter in voice over as the camera pans to him in the audience, standing with the audience to applaud and slowly...pulling out the gun, pointing it at Sally as she takes her bows, then cut to black as the gunshot blasts out. The End. Can I write movies or WHAT?

Bacall was enough of a singer to do two long-running musicals on Broadway. But this was not her finest hour.

k8nairne ~ I have a big scoop for you. What you're referring to is a reverse shot, or "insert," and in all likelihood, Bacall wasn't even performing when that shot was made. For all we know, she could have been in her dressing room at the time, so your assumption is WAY off base.

@@edwardjames50 I've heard Dietrich recordings and that's a good point. Smoky, low voice with almost no range, but very expressive. I think the difference is Dietrich stayed within that limited range, whereas Bacall seems to be straining to do Broadway belting and can't. But I remember this sequence from when the movie was released in theaters and I loved it (although my friend winced and said "Oh, Lauren!" out loud at a particularly bum note)

I loved this movie, but this was the best part.
