Laura Netzel was born in Finland, but grew up in Stockholm. She studied in Paris under composer and organ master Charles-Marie Widor and her Romantic music garnered attention mainly in nineteenth-century France, and elsewhere in Europe.
At the time, it was difficult for women to claim the title of composer, and so initially, her Six Morceaux and many other works were published under the pseudonym N. Lago. Her true identity was revealed in 1891 in an article in the magazine Idun, which featured her as a Swedish pioneer of music.
