One of Laura's best songs.

@@markkimo6942 her last album is the best if you want this stripped down kind of sound. If you are open for a bit more energy, try her second one, the one this song comes from.

@@markkimo6942 Her recent album 'Song For Our Daughter' is really beautiful if you like this style. But if you want more slightly experimental but rustic sounds then 'Once I Was An Eagle' is a worth a listen. 'I Speak Because I Can' is her 2nd album which has this song and one I would also recommend. Hope that's helpful.

People just stand in awe of her presence. Lol. But also when an artist is doing a live recording for a DVD feature or something they’ll often let the audience know (if you even have a chance of seeing audience members then they probably need to sign a release form), & in the case of a soft, quiet folk artist like Laura Marling I’m sure if they were professionals doing the filming (which they seem to be), they probably asked the audience to hold applause for the sake of the recording.

Hello Laura, I was lucky enough to meet you and see you in San Francisco, in 2011, at Bimbos. I was your monitor engineer that night. We, the staff, were destroyed that night by your sheer talent and sound. You have been on my favourites playlist since then and the longer this relationship of music lasts the more I see someone I miss dearly in music. You have become my Jeff Buckley....the phrasing, the sound, the range, the guitar playing....a true inspiration. Thank you and Cheers to you!

She is everlastingly beautiful. The poignance of her music emanates from within her soul, it is so precious.
There were a war in my country last year. We lost so many people. I went to the graveyard yesterday, I saw the graves of those young men. Every time when I think about them, this song goes in my head.

Same in my side.
I can’t think of another artist who has such command of their voice, who can literally talk interspersedly throughout the song and it sounds just as magical. She was amazing when she first started but somehow gets better and better, as if it were even possible. A true artist who’s stayed true to her craft.
I cried for eight songs straight during this show. Grown up with Laura and her songs, she’s the soundtrack to my life. Was the first thing I had to look forward to in ages during this pandemic. Thank you Laura, and the crew that made this show possible :)

This is probably the best thing I have heard and seen today, and maybe... Ever
The chapel is the perfect setting for this song- her voice. Just wow 🌟
brought me here. What an amazing music.
I've been thinking a lot about how much this song and Laura and I have changed since she first put it out (which is like ten years ago) and since when I first heard it (which is eight years ago). There's something impassioned in the plea of the cut on the record but with live performances with each subsequent year, I've always perceived this sense of fatigue that's slowly been taking over, the passion and the guilt and the tumult fading into an understanding of a world you have so little control over. That could be me reading into it ofc but its reflected every little change in Laura's musical evolution from the bits hovering somewhere between speech and singing and the switch to more stripped down instrumentation (that's gone up and down for sure but still). Idk, I just felt like I wanted to say this.

Generally I think that Laura is even better stripped back in sound, and slowing the songs down. I heard a version of Wild Fire this year that I felt proved this further. Having said that, there is a time and a place for Laura rapping (and swearing) also!
@elago98

Her slightly deeper and less nasal voice fits this song so much, and manages to improve it. Though I see your point about fatigue, hard to know why, maybe she's just grown a bit tired of it after playing it so much in 10 years.

i felt exactly the same, the evolution to the point of being fed up, both for laura and for the woman with her man, beautiful.
When I first heard this song I thought it was a cover for some Leonard Cohen song. But no! it is for another creative human of my generation: we are lucky indeed to have you among us Laura :)
I love the way how controlled she is performing , creating a stilness that comforts us , while she s telling us a story about a tragical love and loss. Laura is phenomenal Brilliant 💫
This song somehow always feels like a countersong to Leonard cohen's 'master song' to me. This live version is really amazing!
She's fucking incredible.

Not sure you know what "underrated" means, haha. It's definitely one of her more well-known songs. Instead of expressing your appreciation of it through negation (insisting the song is undervalued), try putting a positive and personal spin on it. "I'm so glad to see that people appreciate this song too. It is so well written/sung. It makes me feel peaceful/happy/sombre, etc. I'm happy to see this live variation of it, it's better than the older studio version" etc.

Actually we never know, what would have happened, if something had changed in the past. It is just the stupid ego, that thinks that and then suffers its own mischief...
As always, entrancing. Captivating. "That suits us well. That suits me well." Thank you. Found you over 10 years ago, reacquainting now. Thank you. Just thank you. Art is so important. You are an expert with words, they soak into me, linger and teach me how better to deal with my feelings. I an enveloped by your soul. Keep writing.
Can’t wait to see you live for the first time🥺🧡

What a beautiful song, what a painful subject for anyone who has had to live it, so well interpreted in the lyrics and the song, but above all by that beautiful woman who is Laura Marling. Hugs and kisses from Berlin, Germany

What a great singer! When someone can perform in such high level live, without the resources of the studio, you can see who is actually a gifted singer. You can't even compare with others who need tons of edition and audio resources to present live.

Your so beautiful in beauty and voice and talent... you may sing very softly but its a change of pace for me I usually listen to James Bay but I came across her playing my PS4 on this one song I would repeat Laura Marling Held Down just really liked the indie folk and vocals and beauty of a voice! I'm also a fan of James Bay and Alexrainbirdmusic keep safe everyone thanks for reading all! (Laura if you see this its my first time watching your music again really good keep it up being you with your songs so soothing and peaceful! wish you all the best.)
Forgive me, Hera I cannot stay He cut out my tongue There is nothing to save Love me, oh Lord He threw me away He laughed at my sins In his arms, I must stay [Chorus] He wrote I am broke Please send for me But I am broken too And spoken for Do not tempt me [Verse 2] Her skin is white And I'm light as the sun So holy light shines On the things you have done So I asked him how he became this man How did he learn to hold fruit in his hands? And where is the lamb that gave you your name? He had to leave, though I begged him to stay Left me alone when I needed the light Fell to my knees and I wept for my life If he had've stayed, you might understand If he had've stayed, you never would have taken my hand [Chorus] He wrote I'm low Please send for me But I am broken too And spoken for Do not tempt me [Post-Chorus] And where is the lamb that gave you your name? He had to leave, though I begged him to stay [Verse 3] Begged him to stay in my cold wooden grip Begged him to stay by the light of this ship Me fighting him, fighting light, fighting dawn And the waves came and stole him and took him to war [Chorus] He wrote I'm broke Please send for me But I am broken too And spoken for Do not tempt me [Verse 4] Forgive me, Hera I cannot stay Cut out my tongue There is nothing to save Love me, oh Lord He threw me away He laughed at my sins In his arms, I must stay [Chorus] We write That's alright I miss his smell We speak when spoken to And that suits us well That suits us well That suits me well
