    Wow, we’ve had our Whirlpool front loader for 8 yrs now and from time to time I have wiped inside that seal. We’ve always left our washers open as far as I can remember as a child. Never had a smell or mold problem whatsoever either on top or front loaders. It definitely makes 100% difference to get into the habit of just leaving the door open 100% of the time when not in use.

    I leave the draw slightly open as well to prevent mould growing in the draw compartment. When we used to leave it closed, we had a problem with mould growing in the top of the draw compartment blocking the water jets and had to regularly clean it with a steamer. As well as leaving the door open, I also use a washing powder that contains oxygen bleach, which is a highly effective microbiocide. When I stripped my machine down to change the bearings after 10 years use, I didn't find any mould or bacterial grime on the inside, it was nice and clean and smell free. The only issue was a few areas with limescale deposits from not descaling it for well over a year. I suspect the same measures also helped to prevent the aluminium alloy spider in my machine from corroding.

    I just picked up a second hand washing machine that I intended to use. Mould on the door seal of course. I mixed up soda crystals and bleach to toothpaste consistency. Applied liberally, left it for 15 mins. Cleaned off with sponge, done it again and the seal was like new. Not a single spore of black mould. Cheap as chips, and the whole process was less than an hour but mainly waiting, no scrubbing what so ever!

    Closed the door, eh? When I bought mine, 8 years ago, the appliance man told me never leave it closed. Leave the dispenser open, as well. My hero! I wrapped a roll of paper towels with a red bandana, my laundry room accent color, and gently wedge it under to keep the door open just a bit. It’s as clean as when I bought it.

    You can get at least one US model with a fan in it so you don't have to leave the door open - I think it is called Ultra fresh. Also some uk washer dryers (which I wouldn't consider buying) run their fan after a wash if you do a wash without the drying cycle, although possibly that's to stop the aluminium fan corroding.

    The GE GFW series *literally has had that exact feature since 2016* and it works very well! In fact, rumor has it, the development of that UltraFresh vent us what ultimately led to the GE combo washer dryer with heat pump drying. That being said, you can absolutely, 100000% never have to deal with mold if you leave the door cracked and use appropriate amounts of powder detergent.

    @@linandy1Just get a top load washer and leave the door open all the time. Front load washer has seals that trap wet air. So mold will come back if the front load washer is placed in basement or anywhere humidity level is high. Even if you kill the mold with chemical, some of dead mold is likely to stay. The only way to get rid of mold is chemically and physically removing it. Then let the dry air flows around.

    like your video but I'd caution everyone to at least understand that ZEP product you demonstrate on that mildew infested gasket at the beginning is basically highly concentrated bleach. I own a commercial laundromat and I wound not use that stuff due to risk of leftover residue and ruining of customers clothes. Bleach is a big no no for my business. Too much can go wrong. At home? I use it. But there's other ways to get rid of that mold. 91% rubbing alcohol works. Odo-Ban will work over time if used consistently. Ammonia works. Bleach is a harsh chemical. I'd be careful.

  • @btshomedition

    @btshomedition

    8 ай бұрын

    If you wash out the bleach after soaking, there won't be any issues. Either way, the ZEP didn't remove the mold so most people will not be using that product to solve their problems. 😁

    You sure we have to give up on liquid soaps? Because as I've read somewhere liquid detergents are best for cloths in front loads being soft on cloths! But when I used powders, the smell was really strong from washer though. Very confusing. I've heard extra detergent (powder) leaves more mould.

    Most ppl thinks their washing machine (or any cleaning device for that matter) works like magic or something. This is one of the reason why the manufacturer(s) recommend to run a tub clean every 60 or so cycles with bleach/baking soda to prevent escalating issues like mold, bacteria(s) growth, etc… Nothing fancy, just bleach ought to suffice or vinegar for those green folks. Granted, you happen to have a horribly designed silicone bellow/seal hence that prob.

    Much more easy: 2 dishwasher tabs, run the hottest program and all mould and soap residue is gone. And leave the door and soap dispenser drawer open to let leftover water vaporize. Also your dryer, never close the door. When you have a heat pump dryer, also open the door to the heat exchanger and let it dry and remove the dust from the dust filter.
