Tricks from a Non-Pro * Removing, Cleaning, Replacing the Rubber Gasket on Front Load Washer

Today's video is all about tricks I learned as a non-pro handy-person while removing, cleaning, and replacing the rubber gasket on my LG front load washing machine. In this video I show you as much detail as possible in my process.
I actually went to the home improvement store twice to buy a specific tool for this job. Both times I received a bit of a brush and was sent home with the wrong tools! So I used jewelry tools and some ingenuity to get the rubber gasket back on, because that is the toughest part of the whole process! I will also note that I saw many videos that said it was too complicated/not necessary to remove the front panels of the washer in order to get the rubber gasket back on. In my non-professional opinion, and as someone who did not have the specialized tools that would have made life easier, I heartily disagree. It was so easy to take off the front and top panels of the washer, and once I did, there was sooooo much more room to work with.
I hope this video helps any of you who want to remove, clean, and replace your rubber gasket, and that are intimidated because you aren't professional handy people!
If you're new here, my name is Sarah, and I am a SAHM to 5 kiddos. Because we went from a family of 5 to a family of 8 in less than half a year, I am devoting a good bit of time to cleaning & organizing my home, as I discover how to make our space & my (limited) time work! Real MVP for using tools that actual normal people already have. And after watching the whole video, I think I'm just gonna set fire to mine and buy a top load.

lol I’ve NEVER, not ever had problems with my “normal” top load washer. Ever since I got a front loader, so many problems! I’ve never had to “clean” my washer, nor have I ever had to buy “washer machine cleaners”, but here I am. Also, never had a washer “rip” my clothing as much as front loaders do. Ugh! But, my clothes has never been so damn clean! 😆

you made it look pretty easy and I could NOT get my spring back in - ordered the pliers and it STILL was really really difficult. Finally completed - 3 days of stop and start cause i was so frustrated. You made me keep trying, cause you showed me it could be done and I saved myself $$ for an appliance repair tech.

i replaced my water pump on my washer today and i've know for a while how dirty it is and wanted to do this since i already had it disassembled but i really needed to wash lol i have to much anxiety to try and use the machines in public also it was all a rush so im here learning how to clean it but am planning to either do it myself or have someone come out and disassemble the drum to really deep clean it. anyway, i just used a flat head to remove the boot spring, came off easily. to put it back on i sat it on top first, had mother use a old white tee to hold it in place so she wouldn't hurt her hands if it possibly wanted to fly off. Had her hold it on the 10 & 12 o'clock position and the i pulled ONLY the right side of the spring with some locking pliers to expand it and then just pushed it in place with my thumb on all the other areas while still holding the spring until i was done. Just wanted to leave a tip for everyone. But of course if you dont have help, follow her tutorial :) also, to keep track of the screws or any parts, take picutes and video and use a piece of card board or a amazon box or cereal box to poke the screws into it. or lay them out in a order that you can remember. most LG washers are similar. DISCONNECT THE PLUG FROM THE OUTLET 4 screw in the back, 2 screws on each bracket to slide off the lid towards the back. 4:35 2 screws on the detergent drawer 4:30 1 right side corner screw with some tabs that you can use a flathead to remove 4:40 she removed 2 but i only had to remove 1 which is the first one she removed. my model is a mw3570hwa 2004. but i think theyre all the same. personally i didn't unplug the faceplate? i just sat it on top while connected before you remove the entire front door panel remove the filter screws located at the bottom left corner and remove the 2 screws for the door latch. DO NOT MESS WITH THE MECHANISM OF THE DOOR LATCH i was trying to get it too lock it before i even turned it on cause the door kept swinging open on me when i tried to put the panel back on. i pushed some white tabs and had to take it apart to fix it and its a bit tricky. so i woudlnt even unplug it, just remove the screws and you're good. theres only 2 screws for the filter cover and then use a flat head to pop the cover out. THEN youll see 1 little screw at the bottom, MAYBE, some videos dont show it like this one i didnt see the filter be removed unless im blind cause i skimmed to the cleaning section and maybe its just my model that has it but it holds the front panel in place at the bottom or it wont let you pull it up. when you remove the front panel youll need to wiggle the filter hose away so it doesnt get caught. 5:06 that first screw i didnt touch and dont think you have to either only remove the 6 screw that are holding the whole front panel 2 on the left stacked, 2 center separated and 2 on the right stacked. and the little screw by the filter i mentioned and the door latch screws. then it should lean towards you and should be able to slide it up off the frame. it really isnt that hard. take your time and be patient. watch as many videos as you need to before attempting. again use a piece of cardboard to poke the screws into and write or draw where they belong.

I love the concept of front load washers. They clean better, they are more reliable, they fit way more, and they’re more efficient. The problem a lot of people has is how the dirt and grime gets caught on the seal and can smell, unlike how in a top loader that dirt and grime is stuck on the outer tub hidden away. But thanks for the video it was very useful!

A masterpiece of what a DIY video should be! THANK YOU for taking the time to explain each step. It's clear from the video that you were methodical to make sure you EDUCATED others, and multiple people are benefiting (including me!) A few personal notes: 1) After installing, I took a good look at the old gasket and sure enough there was a small hole at the bottom of the gasket. Makes perfect since why I was seeing some weird stains inside the bottom of the washer when I was trying to diagnose. :) 2) Since I had to order the gasket and with the difficulty of the task, I would have bought the tool for the spring release. I appreciate your stick-to-it attitude to do it yourself :) Well done! 3) Upon re-assembly, the front panel electrical connector was actually damaged (possibly by me in the past) but I ended up installing that multi-wire connector BACKWARDS -- big bummer. I'm in the middle of making that work -- oh well ... THANKS AGAIN FOR A *GREAT* VIDEO! :)

I know you mentioned that you're not a fan of bleach, but it really does help I have a Beko model, I've had it 2 years and every month I: Take the pump filter out, clean it, inspect the pump filter housing and the impeller at the back Take the detergent drawer out, clean it throughly, check around the detergent drawer housing and the water jets for any signs of mould, I use a bleach and washing up liquid spray I make myself and brush to clean and prevent mould as much as possible Reassemble the machine Load the machine with white dish cloths, these are cleaned otherwise, I leave them in discinfectant and wash them at 60oC usually, but once a month in a washing machine at a very high temperature with bleach will clean them very thoroughly Add a TINY amount of bleach and washing up liquid (no more than 2 teaspoons each), and yes you absolutely can use washing up liquid in a washing machine just not too much or it will foam up too much Wait for the machine to finish filling, then add additional water to being the level above the bottom of the door Put the machine on its very hottest setting Let the machine finish a cycle I then remove the clean cloths, and leave the machine door and drawer open to let it air out, and I do this between all washes as it prevents mould Doing this on a regular basis means I am preventing issues as much as possible, and my machine doesn't smell at all Inbetween washes wipe inside the door and around the door gasket to remove excess water that will remain after a wash, leave the door and drawer open to allow air to circulate, this prevents mould, mould loves damp, dark and stale conditions Don't use too much detergent, people think more detergent means cleaner clothes, when it's not true, you are wasting your money and causes issues with potential build up in your machine (top loaders and front loaders), also avoid using fabric softener, it just adds a layer on your clothing which can actually trap odours, plus it puts a layer inside your machine over time which just becomes a breeding ground for mould and bacteria Don't use too many short cycles either, they are convenient, but they miss important rinses and length of washing meaning detergent residue can build up in the your machine, which becomes food for mould to grow on If you perform a maintenance wash as I have described every month, and inbetween washes you leave your door open and your drawer open as well as wiping down the inside of the door and the door gasket, and you cut down your detergent use (trust me) you will find your machine won't suffer with smells I intend on my machine, although it was cheap to last me upwards of 10 years, and I hope after 10 years or whenever it fails, I can show that the door seal and outer drum aren't excessively dirty, because I follow basic mantenance advice

I also am moving away from bleach - so I appreciated that. Just got mine back together! Thank you for taking the time and making such a concise easy-to- understand video. It is utterly preposterous that LG makes what should be a routine maintenance item so absurdly difficult to clean. They’re well aware these seals are mildew, mold, and fabric softener traps. Why they don’t make these seals quick detach is beyond me. Thank you for demystifying this

So. Much. Detail. Thanks for making this video. You did such a great job explaining everything from start to finish. And you’re right, “all the other” videos do skip over a lot of detail, and make it look so easy. I have a 12 year old LG with the steam option, and over the past 12 years, have had 8 dogs, and 2 cats, and there’s ALOT of gunk and hair in there. And who knows what else. And give yourself more credit. You ARE strong enough to get those springs back on. You’re just not the contortionist LG expects 😂 …..I’m fused from L-1 to S-1. This should be fun. I just took apart my LG Dryer and did a deep clean of the heating element and the lint trap / exhaust system and it was PACKED as was the electrical heating element from dog hair. But the dryer is so much more efficient now and saves money not running so hard. Thanks again for the great video. You’re a fantastic human. 🎉

To get the spring back together on the outer seal I bent a paper clip and passed it through the eyelet and held it with a vice grip. I used a needle-nose plier to hold the other end about an inch back from the attachment loop. This allowed me to gradually pull them together and line up the hook with the spring eyelet. Then I pulled the paper clip out. Pretty easy after I figured it out

LG has a two-position latch that allows you to leave the door ajar when not in use. I have three units that were haul-aways that I've been testing for over two years, and I found that despite one with infrequent use and another unit with almost daily use, leaving the door ajar like this *completely* eliminates the mold issue.. and all three machines are in an unconditioned basement. It's literally not an issue but for reasons I cannot fathom, American consumers seem to say "I don't want to have to do anything special!" which I'm starting to think should be read as: "I won't be told what to do! I have FREEDOM! I'll just buy a top loader that cleans way worse, last about a quarter as long as an LG front loader, spins half as fast and costs me thousands of dollars more in electricity for the dryer because I'm FREE to be needlessly wasteful because I'm averse to thinking I should be expected to maintain anything!"

Just did this on a Whirlpool Duet. Similar issues. There is just no way for the seal to drain fully. I took it a few steps further by opening the back of the machine, removing some bottom drain areas and cleaning, but in the end, it's not optimal. Seriously considering going back to a topload system. One additional point to emphasize, check your drain hose going into the wall. It should not be hanging down to the floor ( I believe minimum 30" from the ground). Ensuring your drain hose is reasonably short, while going pretty deep into the drain will allow it to syphon as much fluid as possible.

I got the springed cable on easy. I watch the whole video which was great and decided just to take the outer springed cable off since the lower rim drain piping was clogged and didn't want to clean it that well. But the springed cable went on easy. I put the cable over the outside 80% then used a putty knife to peel the spring over the remainder of rubber, straight downward. It's slipped right over with a little help. 👍

This is so helpful! I found a LG washer and dryer set for sale and sent my husband, told him to check and smell the washer and he only smelled the dryer lol. (You know where this is going….) he got it home and pulled out the drawer where detergent goes and it was black! The boot was even more awful. He scrubbed and cleaned and then I did and I thought it was good and clean but after a month my house smells like mildew soooo bad! Clothes are smelling fine so far so that’s odd. I ordered a new rubber boot seal and I’m going to replace it this weekend, I have the tool for the spring I got from Amazon for 12.00, I’m so scared to see how bad it is! Thank you for a video that shows everything from a non professional standpoint! Wish me luck!

If your front load washing machine is dirty/moldy internally, your clothes and towels will stink(no matter what). I have a similar LG front load. I have tried the cleaning additives that require you to run a cycle. Nothing has worked. I am going to tackle this. Thanks for having the guts to do this, and thank you for the video!

Wow that was really impressive! I just bought a washer secondhand bc mine was leaking.. the “new” one is soooo gunky & slimy inside the gasket it’s disgusting🤢😱 I wiped what I could by hand.. Its a Kenmore, so idk how similar the makeup is, but seeing how involved it was taking it apart makes me wish I just got a toploader.. Ridiculous that they don’t make them more user friendly to get the gasket off to actually clean it

P now I would like to beg a differ because you said that they said front loaders they cannot ever get completely dry well I used to believe that until I found this device on Etsy it's a little magnetic thing that's like 4 inches long and you put it on the door and then the frame and it holds the door open about 4 inches but it's magnetized so it won't swing open and that allows it to dry out and not let the water sit in there and collecting that little lip it has helped tremendously with the smell and for not to build up and cause that black stuff it's really cool anyway I loved your video

Those door boot on LG is hard to put that rear claimp back on with out that special tool. I'm a technician in the field. I take the whole thing apart when working on LG there not enough leavage to put that boot on the front. I also remove those balancing bricks to make claimp on go easier. The whirlpool boot I could do those easily with out taking the frame out.
