You know what would make this even better and more functional (because I suspect that your lower plants don't get nearly as much water as they need) is this: Before you put the soil in, drill a lot of holes in a pvc pipe and place it vertically in the middle of the basket. Add the soil around it, but not in it. When it's time to water, fill the pvc pipe with water so that it distributes the water evenly all the way to the bottom. Viola.

Sandia you're a genius. Im trying your idea
I just tried this and one suggestion I would make for doing it easier is instead of filling it ALL The way up with dirt, then trying to shove the plants in, fill it up to the level you want your first plants at, put them in, add more dirt, put plants, add more dirt, etc. When I was working near the top and was able to scoop the dirt away from the side it was MUCH easier to get the strawberry plant into the hole without feeling like I was stuffing it and potentially damaging the roots.

Great suggestion! Did this type of pot work for strawberries? Was watering an issue?

Thank you. You know why this is such an excellent idea? I haven't gotten all the strawberry plants yet. Only 6 of them. I can still plant those now and add some more later!
I love that this video is brief. A lot of gardeners on youtube just talk way too much. I don't have time to watch all of these super long videos to get three minutes worth of information. You packed so much information into a nice short video and I love it.
Update: I have 30 hampers now on my terrace complete with all veggies, strawberries and even fruit trees! The apple tree is already making lots of apples! I reckon, I can keep the fruit trees in the hampers if I cut roots and branches a bit bonsai style. And in winter I can easily carry the plants that need protection indoors. A totally brilliant system!

Wow! You are an inspiration! I live in an apartment with direct access to a community patio, but a little section for each tennant outside our individual apartments. This might be the best solution I found so far, if I can find free or cheap burlap sacks.

Do the strawberries winter over in the hamper? I'm curious how perennials do if not in the ground.

@@erinowens1880 is usually recommended to cover them through winter to protect from deep freezes. They go dormant through winter and pop back up in spring. They're supposed to improve with every season.

How do you give them water, especially the ones beneath?
Thank you for this really great idea! Last fall we moved from a 7000 square meter property to a cave house with "only" a terrace. I watched all the vertical growing methods on KZread, but none of them looked suitable for my terrace vegetable garden, nor did they look pretty. Then I saw your laundry basket turned strawberry planter and I immediately knew that this was it. I've so far ordered 10 of the exactly same baskets, also in white and I'm now planting a "thin" plant (i.e. garlic or onion) always next to a "bushier" one. I.e. a lettuce, a strawberry plant, a kale and so much more all for making green smoothies or for cooking. On top of the laundry basket planters I will plant tomatoes, cucumbers, hokkaido pumpkin, sweet melon, beans and they will all grow higher and higher and onto our cave roof where they can then mature in the hot Spanish sun. Thank you again for this great idea, organic veggies are our life and your idea came just in time! It's not easy to go from lots of land to just a terrace, but now I CAN! :)

What a brilliant idea! Gardens are just so amazing! It seems the more challenging, the more amazing they become! Well done, & Happy gardening. 😍😍❤❤✌✌✌
Maybe you should show how you got the strawberry plants roots through the holes?
This is a great idea, except for the whole watering problem. I noticed that there was a few requests for a follow-up video. A good solution to watering the bottom portion is using a tube for deep watering (sticking a tube in there vertically, that's perforated); or making the planter about half the size.
I can't believe this came up while looking for DIY strawberry containers!!!! I was like, its Laura from Garden Answers!!!! I love it!! Thanks Laura. I'm sold on the idea. 🌻🍓💗🌻🍓💗
Really like your ideas! Tried this on a smaller level with a laundry basket half the size. So far, so good 😊

Hi Sharon Cooper. Can you tell me about watering? Any particular system? Thx
Excellent idea. I just happen to have 2 plastic laundry baskets lying around without purpose. Now they have one. Thank you. I love your ideas. You have an amazing eye for aesthetics.
You always come up with the neatest ideas!
What an interesting and clever idea. I've been vegetable and fruit gardening for many years. I plan to give this a try this year. I don't grow anything I can't eat so will be using the top for additional strawberries. Seems to me that if you use a good wicking potting mix that a drainage hole will not be needed. Just don't plant strawberries in the lower holes. Excess water will overflow through the lower holes.
It just doesn't matter how old a video is, they can always come in handy for someone, somewhere down the track! We're planning on moving house within the next 6/12 months. I've planted a tiny strawberry patch, originally with 3 different strawberry plants, in the actual garden here. They've given us so many of the most beautiful largest, sweetest berries... I've certainly never tasted these from a shop! And have thrown many a baby plant (I'm not sure what they're called, the new ones they grow from the runners). I've got multiple pots, all with clones of these 3 different strawberry plants, but the number of separate pots are getting a bit out of hand, especially considering we're moving soon. From your idea, I now know exactly how I'm going to do it! I'm going to grow strawberry towers, from all the baby runners! And they'll be fine in there for next season too, just boost the soil, re-compost, put a new topping of fresh annual, floral plants on top, & I won't need to rush to get them either into the ground or into bigger pots, straight after the move either! (Soon after, but not immediately.) Brilliant idea! Thank you! ❤❤
That's a brilliant idea I used an old bin lined with a bin liner to grow my carrots lol I recycle my old washing baskets ;) keep up the great videos make my day. hope u enjoyed ur holiday sweetie xx
Just watched this. Totally love this idea. I already have this basket - I have yards of hobby burlap I can sew together. Love this idea.
I have to take a break every so few days from watching your videos because you keep giving me ideas that I'm running out of yard for! 😂
This works great! I used crowns and had the same basket and burlap sack at home. I love this because I don't have to use a bunch of straw to keep the strawberries off the ground and I will just put it in my shop during the winter. So easy❤❤❤😍
Literally the best idea! I’m doing this at the weekend thank you so much xxx
Maybe you could show this planter again after the strawberries ripen?

Same here. I don't see many DIY laundry baskets in these gardens later on.
love it,, what a great idea. Cant wait to see the updated video.
It's a really good idea. I'll try it.
Cannot wait to do this. My strawberries made it through our cold winter & I have new ones to add Just need burlap.
I just found this on 4/1/21. Another idea I must do! LOL. More strawberries needed.
Omg great idea. Thank you for sharing
Excellent! I am going to follow this. I too have strawberry seedlings.
You can also find burlap at places that sell grain too. I've purchased grains in burlap before, when I had horses. 😊 🐎 Love the Laundry basket planter for strawberries, that's a fantastic idea. I'll have to talk to my husband about something like this for on our deck. We get *Full* sun on the deck and need to dress it up oh so badly.
Love this idea.. gonna do it. Thanks.
I love watching your videos. You do beautiful work!!!!!

Inspiring.... Love the ideas🌳🌹
I was thinking of doing the exact same thing!
Love you guys you make me laugh all the time... love those large snip they would fit just right in my hand.....
Creative and inexpensive alternative to vertical gardening. 👍🍓🏵
I've always wondered what to do if I want a tower garden but I dont want to do holes on a plastic drum. Thanks a bunch for the answer. Love it.
Great idea!
I'm so glad I found this video as I've been buying laundry baskets in Dollar Tree for only one dollar! I prefer to have white baskets as they keep the bugs away more than the black ones. I was wondering if a basket full of holes could be bad for the plants but I got my responses from this video! Thanks.
Love this idea.
Ok. For those who wanted an update, I did see an answer a year later from Laura to a comment about watering them in. She said the strawberry did well and even survived the winter. I guess she forgot to do a follow up video. Probably Too many new things to show
Fantastic idea.
Really great idea👍,love it😍
Perfect job.
