Latuda

Latuda belongs to the atypical antipsychotic family of drugs meant to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disease. Unlike other related drugs, Latuda acts against the depression of bipolar disease and is not indicated for the manic stages. Latuda may be prescribed to individuals as young as 10 years of age, however diagnosis in the pediatric population remains somewhat controversial.
Unfortunately Latuda offers only some degree of improvement rather than cure. In some studies Latuda fails to provide statistically significant evidence of improvement. When it does offer relief, a common scenario is only reducing a person's status from markedly ill to moderately ill.
Evidence for Latuda stems from studies the company conducted throughout the world. To some extent this detracts from the believability of the data since it poses almost insurmountable difficulties in monitoring and compliance. Latuda was evaluated in Ukraine, India, Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Argentina, Colombia, South Africa and Peru among others. With international cultural and social differences, studies involving a more homogenous population would be preferable. Finding 500 patients in America, Canada, Australia or England with such common conditions ought to be an easy task.
As with most patent protected antipsychotics the cash price at the pharmacy remains out of control. At Costco the drug sells for in excess of $45 a pill or $1414 a month; at Walgreens it is considerably more. Latuda's manufacturer's apparent target is the insurance company. It offers a discount card allowing the consumer to pay less than $10 a month as long as Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare are not involved. The company negotiates some discount with private insurers but not the government. Generic forms of Seroquel, Abilify, Resperdal and Zyprexa are available for a monthly cost of less than $20.

I’ve taken all of them, vraylar, rexulti, and now Latuda. This one by far has been the best. I am 2 months into it. So far my side affects have been really minimal to none, maybe some drowsiness from it but I think that has to do more with my sleeping patterns. Overall I am much more stable and everyone around me says they think I’m the most stable I’ve ever been. No more constant negative thoughts or compulsions like I had on vraylar. Very calm. Would recommend

This is the 5th medication I tried for bipolar disorder. It's had the least amount of side effects out of the meds I've tried. And it's done a great job with my anxiety disorder. I haven't had a lot of break through mania on this med compared to when I was on rispiradone. And I am not as sedated as I was on seraquil. I have had nausea on latuda. But it has gotten better with time. And it's been a little more sedating than I would like. Rispiradone was less sedating for me. And it has caused me to have my menstrual cycle less frequently than normal. Medications for bipolar disorder seem to all have some negative side effects. But this has been the most tolerable medication for me so far. And I'm losing some of the weight I gained on seraquil and rispiradone. I've also tried abilify, which caused me tremors. I do a lot of art. So having unsteady hands is a no go for me. And I've tried Lithium, which caused me a lot of water retention. Like edema level water retention. So far, I'm glad I have this medication option. It's not perfect. But it's better than other things I've tried.

If you look at the left hand side of the chemical structure for geodon and latuda you will see they are exactly the same, starting with the phenyl group. The right hand side is similar to risperidone and many others. The essence of what he's saying is that this isn't a new drug, it's a variation on things that already exist. That's not always a bad thing, a variant could work a lot better than what it's based on, but in this case the data suggests that this one isn't. For what it's worth I'm on it. Risperidone worked great for my mental health situation but the side effects sucked. Havent been on latuda long but at least it's not making me want to stuff my face constantly.

I believe that is akathisia. I suffered from what you have described. Akathisia is hard to treat, but lifestyle changes, especially eating at least 300 calories 30 minutes before you take the pill, the side effects are significantly lower. The benefits, for me, outweigh the side effects if you really try to push through it. As always, work closely with your doctors and psychiatrists and other care team members to find out if what you're doing is working. Only YOu (and by "YOU", I mean anyone struggling with mental illnesses), can decide if you feel better. There is no magic pill. Period. Therapy, a lot of personal work, lifestyle changes, and so much more need to be applied in combination to produce results. It takes work to feel better. Whether medications are needed, or not.

so basically what you’re saying is latuda isn’t worth it. i’ve been on it since october 2021 and have had almost 10 seizures, never having one before in my life before starting the latuda. i believe i had some form of NMS (neuroleptic malignant syndrome). i stopped taking it two days ago, after tapering from 60mg, to 40mg, to 20mg over the course of a few months. ever since starting it, i’ve been exhausted all the time, occasionally nauseous and loose stools. after two days of not taking it i already have more energy, and since tapering it down i have not had a single seizure.

Latuda has only been on the market for several years- so we have no idea how It will affect your neuro cognitive functioning and organs as you age. I was prescribed Latuda a couple weeks ago, but after research wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. I'd have to stop working out (fine print says to avoid prolonged cardio especially in heat- I live in Florida and workout outside every day), eat 350 calories before bed with pill, likely deal with fatigue and restlessness- all of which is a sum zero when compared to what I deal with as BP-1. To me-- those are my symptoms when I'm depressed. So why would I take a drug meant to treat depression when it will cause me to be depressed?! Tardive Dyskinesia is particularly concerning, and a whopping percentage of people develop it from this drug. I think this is way too new to be prescribed to patients, and to take it is acting as a guinea pig. Wouldn't be surprised to see a class action lawsuit against Latuda within the next several years. No thanks!

I hate that antipsychotics like this and abilify are peddled for people who don't have psychosis. They are nasty drugs with very nasty side effects. No one should be on them if they don't have to be. Just my opinion as a person who does experience psychotic delusions at times and has to be on something for it. I have tried so many of them and they are all really gross. Seroquel is the only one I can tolerate, and only at low doses, and not without consequences. There are so many less extreme options for unipolar depression. I'm really sorry you were exposed to this. :( I don't understand why it's pushed so hard. I think if a doctor had first hand experience with antipsychotics they would be more careful about who they prescribed them to.

First few weeks this worked fairly well for me. I had insomnia and would get bad nausea shortly after taking the med, but I had more energy and a clearer mind than on seroquel. However after week 3 I started getting an all too familiar restless-boredom that seems to appear every time I take an antipsychotic. My brain demands stimulation but can't focus on any activities or anything going on around me. It's as if these drugs suck up all of the dopamine my poor brain can produce. Time slows to a crawl and every passing day feels like hell. Abilify was the absolute worst offender. Like Latuda, Rexulti seemed fine at first but took a turn. Rexulti had some other side effects with my eyes. Latuda is not as bad as either of those but each day the restlessness gets worse. I don't know if I can make it another week like this.

@@nativechique7589 I had to go off the meds entirely, but I am extremely sensitive to most meds and am on super baby doses, so there's only so far down I can go. The restless feeling did disappear when I stopped taking the med. (Nothing was done without my doctor's approval.) I wish you luck.

Be very careful getting off benzos. Do not cold turkey. Benz withdrawal can be hell for up to 10 years.

Benzos like Clonazepam is much better, why would you want to get off (If you have serious illness like schizophrenia) for me it's the only medication that makes me feel better. Latuda just messes with my sleep, I can't sleep well on it.
