Lathe Spindle Repair
Ғылым және технология
We received a spindle and pulley out of a Wholesale Tools TD-4 lathe that is in the need of repair. Both the shaft and pulley have wear in them that'll need to be corrected. In this video we begin with the repair of the spindle. I'll use the flame spray technique to bring the spindle size back to specs. In a separate video I'll share repairing the pulley.

I disagree with the people complaining about you expanding your skills and services. While I originally started watching for the manual machining, I enjoy seeing your evolution and watching the various types of content. Keep it up, Adam!

As long as he keeps it as 'CNC through the eyes of a manual machinist', I'm fine. I do NOT want to watch someone spewing about a bunch of G-code and watching someone doing CAD on a computer.

There’s a place for both manual and CNC machining. There is something to be said about the entertaining factor of manually machining plus the creativity involved. I started manually machining and it wasn’t until i knew I reached my limits and needed CNC that i started that shift.

I really like this shop. Memories? Maybe.... I started watching Abom when he first stated.
I love seeing someone take pride in their work. Thanks for the video.
Nice to see some work in the old shop. Thanks for the great video.
Good to see you back in the old shop, feels more at home for me. Only thing better would be some old Motion metal hoggin videos again. Your success from those days has been outstanding, which is on full display in your new shop.
Regrinding those well-worn live centers would make a nice video. I'd be curious to see how you tackle that.

I would think he could machine his own. Ive made a lot of my own tooling and custom boring bars for my lathe. They turned out amazing.

It can be done but since live centers turn on their own bearings they would require a special setup.
Love watching a Master at work. Love seeing The Customer get his parts returned in BETTER-THAN-FACTORY Condition. Good lessons here.
Never gets old watching flame spray
Dude, other machinists hit the numbers too, but your finishes are always the best! Nice job sir, as always!
Don't forget to fix your live centers and your steady rest, nice job
I think a video showing the restoration of that steady rest would be great. As usual, great video and your attention to detail!
Happy to see the old shop and doing work Love the spray welding
I love the spray weld goggles: make you look like a mad scientist. I need a pair of those to use when I work as well
please make the steady rest repair in one of your following videos. Disassembly of that thing must be fun to watch.
Finally a real snl home shop video sure have miss them
Was extremely great to see a good ole manual machining video, no computers no nonsense just what most folks would like to be seeing, hope this trend continues 👍
I'm looking forward to the steady rest rebuild series.
I miss your working in the home shop, thanks .
Always like seeing the spray flame build-up videos they never get old.
This is the spindle drive arrangement used in old British Myford lathes. These lathes are in normal drive when the bull gear (big gear on the spindle nose side of the pulley) is locked to the pulley with the pin engaged. So the pulley drives the bull gear directly which drives the spindle. In back gear you uncouple the bull gear from the pulley (by latching the pin out of the pulley drive hole) and engage the back gear. The back gear is driven from the small gear behind the pulley and drives the spindle through the bull gear at a slower rate. For this to work, the pulley must run freely on the spindle, which is where the wear was on this spindle and pulley set. And yes, bushing the pulley (and smaller gear) with a bronze bearing is the right thing to do.

Back gear for when the pulley spins on the spindle shaft, something one might expect Adam to surmise instead of saying he didn't know.
@BillySugger1965

@@richardjones-sl2zd I’m sure he figured it out, if he didn’t know already. Just pointing it out for anyone wondering who’s not familiar with this arrangement. 😊
Adam, you saved my lathe! I have a very similar machine to the td4 that I picked up a few months ago. Excessive chatter in backgear despite spending hours trying to adjust it. What I realized after watching this video is that there is a set screw oil hole in the middle belt pulley that requires oiling, and was likely never oiled through the 50 year life of this machine. Chatter went away instantly! Hopefully you saved me a big repair. Thanks for all you do!
I see that you are in the old shop, that is why I started watching
You had me at flame spray. This level of precision makes me extraordinarily happy. Love the videos!
Every time I watch one of these flame spray videos it amazes me just how good a repair you are able to achieve with this method!
Good to see some excellent shop work again! Hopefully many more to follow!! Thanks for sharing!
These type spindles are used on belt drive lathes and only rotate inside the housing in back gear. Nevertheless, if there’s room they need bronze bushings and some way to oil them. Adam is on the right track with this one.
Yeah old shop action. Super sweet.
Adam, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I've watched you for years, and appreciate all you have taught us. Thanks again!
Seems like it's been awhile since seeing the home shop. Love it. Really apprieciate your skill.
This is just what you need to sooth your nerves after a long day, a nice long and relaxing Abom Video to watch and relax to!
Nice to see the old shop. It's been a while.
Never tire of seeing your amazing engineering skills at work.Thank you.
So nice to see that oldschool press still working. Hail the patriarch! Killer project, as usual. Production quality is evident. Videos included.
You know Adam, It seems in all the years I have been watching you flame spray, the past year or two it seems like you have taken it up a notch or two on finish and blend into the original part. Outstanding sir.
A classic Abomb repair. Also looking forward to seeing the steady rest repear and those beaten up live centers.
Learned a lot over the years watching Adam. Spray welding is still is one of the more intriguing skills I’d love to try.
Keeping another lathe running, great work, Sir!!
I have ALWAYS liked using the spray. Saving time for the customer and the machines. Saving money and time for everyone is always a +
I'll be looking for a new video for that steady rest ...Just a reminder Good to see your camera crew working
The finish on the repaired journal is incredible. Always love your content.
Mr. Booth, that was fun. Thank you. Huge fan in Huntspatch AL.
With those googgles and the torch going you look like a rocket engineer from a 1930s Buck Rogers movie.
Sorry Dude- but the old shop has a nice comfortable feel....
Great fun to watch and super-informative. Maybe the latest tool-buying sprees could include a set of metric micrometers and verniers? It sees strange to be having to do conversions each time you have a metric component.

I agree with Mathew and I have no doubt that we will see plenty of old school machine in amongst the new. Keep on entertaining us all.
You could regrind those bullnose centers instead of just replacing them. You can do it on the lathe using a toolrest mounted diegrinder. Would make for a nice video
Always enjoy wathcing you do the flame build. Shaft came out really nice. Thanks for sharing.
That’s an amazing finish where the flame spray is. That’s just awesome 👍 Nice work. You hit the numbers perfectly 😊
Well done! It's nice to see back in the home shop!
Great video Adam. So satisfying to watch manual machining. This repair was likely needed due to running in back gear with inadequate oil. Close inspection of that pulley should show a removable screw you can take out to squirt oil down onto that spindle when you run in back gear. This looks like 80s Taiwan lathe. An owner's manual should cover the oiling procedure. Keep em oiled guys.
Just wouldn't be Saturday night without a new Abomb79 video.
I love the spraying and machining videos. Ok....that was a lie. I love the all. Some much fine tallerences to deal with. Great job. Can't wait to see pt 2
You would be correct about the shaft being used in branded lathes. I bought an old (probably from the 1950's) lathe sold by Select Machine Tool& Supply Company in Bell Gardens, CA. The phone number on the user manual does not have an area code! Naturally, they are no longer in business. It is listed as a 10" bench lathe. The cover of the manual says 5in x 23 in. I use a 6 inch chuck and an 8 inch faceplate. upon aquisition I also took mine completely apart for cleaning and new spindle seals. Anyway, the spindle on mine looks identical to this one. I am retired IA teacher. Hobbies -- woodworking, metalworking, steam engines, black power, rock crawling with my Jeep. I did enjoy your video.
the new equipment in the new shop is cool, but these are the video's i like to watch.....
i love how you care for your machinery, i bought a lathe recently and had to take it apart completely because of the lack of care that the previous owners had, the bull gear had a chipped tooth on it and the cross slide nut is shot
Great video again Adam. I am not a machinist but have 2 other trades. I always love to see others trade people doing what they are good at. Thank you for these great videos all the way from Canada.
Love the way you explained everything. Newbies like me need to know, too. How about a video about working on heat treated parts on the lathe and mill. Parts that are already heat treated..
You can’t argue with those results..! Nicely done, as always, Adam.
Great work Adam i love the quality of your work as always practical and msterfull all at the same time.
I know Abbey lives to film when you do flame spray. Looking good there.
Dude, you are the A, B & Cbom when it comes to doing a flame spray job !! That spindle looks like it just rolled out of the factory !
i always have a wee smile when someone removesd a part from the chuck on a lathe and says it turned out great
Spray weld saves the day, nice job Adam.😃
That Dragon's Breath is just amazing.
Excellent work! Surprised to see how soft the metal on that spindle seemed to be.
Another piece from Poland in your workshop. Great👍
did jobs with a victor lathe for oak industries corning cable con for years.. best lathe job I ever had.
Regardless of what the other people say I am enjoying your videos. And the best repair is the one that you cannot tell was actually ever damaged.
Aways a joy to watch you being a true craftsman. Your attention to detail is outstanding, and to be commended.
Love the spray weld videos. I actually believe the first video I ever saw of yours was a large shaft spray weld repair.
Spray welding and finishing to original size is an interesting process. Until I started watching Adams channel I didn’t know it could be done.
Nice work, that's probably the best looking finish I have seen from one of your flame spray repairs. Nice to see machining.
Pretty slick, never get tired of watching you do it
Really beautiful detail work,Adadm.Thank you.
Great repair video Adam. 2nd one should be interesting to wrap this up. Looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing.
Spray weld used for the proper application! A tenth might be significant if he’s making parts for NASA ;) Adam saves another lathe from being a slop turner.
Thanks I do like your sharing spindle. I am planning homemade lathe spindle too.
I bet you could recondition those centers from your dad. Be nice to keep tools from family in use if possible.
Flame spraying is new to me. What a neat tool/process. Cheers.
Always like watching repair jobs like this; great work as usual.
Always excellent work! I learn something every time I watch one of your videos! Thanks Adam
How nice is that!!! Lovely work Adam.
Fix your steady rest and true up your bull nose centers. Family tools first.😊

Nice to be at the home shop. Nice work, and a learning experience on top of everything else. Thanks.
I like your videos. It is ALWAYS good to keep learning new stuff. More power to you!
Another great videi. I love the flame spray work.
I love watching you work. Ciao, Marco.
A pleasure to watch your attention to detail.
La explicación es lo mejor del video y su ejecución es la cereza en el pastel. Saludos desde México.
outstanding work!
Glad to see you working at the home shop. I like the finish, I think the flame sprayed metal is more consistent on hollow bar as it's easier to keep the temperature up.
Steve Summers recently had a video where he reground the nose of a live center that was buggered up. Maybe he could do the same for your bull noses and make a crossover video about it.
@johnbonner922

That's my same thinking. Seems reasonable that the center could be cleaned up via grinding or some other way.
Again can’t say enough my friend super work total enjoy watching you Adam god bless you too Johnny.
love watching you spray parts
Looking forward to the SteadyRest episode.
Wow, beautiful repair.
Another stellar job Adam!
I'm just a hobbyist/Lathe enthusiast and I love to see these big older machines being brought back to life., Well done man. Really enjoyed the video where u made the new lead screw for this. That was a very interesting piece of viewing for me.. I am looking to get a Lathe in my small shop one day but I may only ever own one of the cheap ones bcos my little shop couldn't take that biggun.. I've only got a one cart Garage.. LOL Keep up the awesome content my bro..
Great job on that repair Adam.
Brilliant to watch, and a brilliant result too. Thank you for sharing. 👏👏👍😀
