    Politics had nothing to do with it. He was in way over his head and didn't have the money. When rebuilding/ restoring a vessel, you start from the bottom up. Not the top-down like he did. He never put it into drydock because he didn't have the money to do it. Unfortunately, it's a wasted effort for those who gave their time or money.

    I visited the ship somewhat recently, and I knew she was in need of a proper dry dock refit. The ship had holes from corrosion right above the waterline. It was sooner or later, until someone brings her into a shipyard and replace the hull plates.

    It is a bit sad, the old owner could not fix/repair/restore as fast as the ship decayed and finally ran out of finances and motivation, a new owner without any understanding about the state of the ship jumped into buying it and apparently did not take measures to 24/7 surveillance regarding water intrusion and a way to remove eventually water, you even need this on brand new boats. The ship needed at dry dock, sand blasting, and then an thorough investigation of the state of the hull, and the result may very well be that it is too expensive to fix the hull, and to come to this conclusion will cost a lot of money. I would not be surprised if it would had turned out to be cheaper to build a new hull than to repair the existing one, sorry.

    They’d just slowly scrap it and fight over the scraps to finance their addictions. Any real dwelling you give them, they will destroy. Being terminally (not temporarily) homeless is a lifestyle that’s chosen. Those who don’t want that situation will pull themselves out of it. I know it’s hard to believe, but this is how some people prefer to live. They don’t want any part of society or rules and obligations that come with homeless shelters or government programs.

  • @DucknCoverin

    @DucknCoverin

    27 күн бұрын

    Also. It would cost tens of millions of dollars to make this ship tenable on land. You’d have to dig a permanent graving dock and fix the hull. You have to remove the asbestos that’s probably everywhere in this ship. Then you’d have to brace the hull from all directions to help prevent pancaking of the structure. Ships don’t like to be permanently out of the water. The equal forces of the water on the hull are what prevents ships from slowly collapsing on themselves over time. Point being you can’t just take an old ship and stick it on land as a long term housing solution.

    @@benzproducts Money is the answer, Chris was running out of money/time/motivation/enthusiasm/etc. He had properly been told many times, over the years, by people that understand old ships, that the condition of his ship was "bad" or as a minimum "questionable" and that he need dry dock, sand blasting, and a thorough investigation of the state of the hull just to get a realistic estimate about the state of the ships hull, that is very expensive, and it is money you will not be able to get back if the condition turns out to be bad. The line of car/ship owners that had done a thorough investigation of the state of their thing and then realized that it was way more bad than they had hoped for is long, very long, the line of those that just hoped "it will be ok, I will just go on fixing it step by step" and then suddenly the thing breaks into pieces, is even longer. Old used cars is bad, old used ships is even more bad, the numbers of dreamers is endless, unscrupulous used car/ship salesmen's make a damn good living from these dreamers.
